Paul, Ringo & Larry King

CNN just rebroadcast a Larry King interview with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr this past weekend. Originally broadcast last June, the interview also features Olivia Harrison, Yoko Ono Lennon, and Guy Laliberte, the founder of Cirque du Soleil. They celebrated the first year anniversary of the LOVE show, a high tech blend of modern circus theatre set to an exciting mashup of Beatles music remixed by Sir George Martin and his son Giles.

CNN filmed the tribute show from the Beatles Revolution Lounge at the Mirage in Las Vegas. There’s great dialog between Paul and Ringo, and an interesting story from Olivia talking about how George and Guy came to be friends and fans of each other’s work, and combined their talents to create the LOVE show, the first of it’s kind to celebrate the art and music of the Beatles.

The show’s soundtrack features the Beatles music remixed by Sir George Martin and his son Giles, from the original Abbey Road studio master tapes. LOVE The soundtrack album has both the stereo CD and the 5.1 surround sound DVD, which does sound awesome. The album won a Grammy this year for the surround sound mix.

40 years after releasing Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the Beatles are still on the charts and in the hearts of millions of fans around the world. It’s amazing to watch new generations of kids pick up on their music, too. And if fans have their way, the Beatles huge catalog of music just might be available soon online.

But meanwhile…Paul McCartney’s latest album Memory Almost Full sold over a million copies for HearMusic, the Starbucks music label.

EMI has released Ringo’s catalog online for digital downloads last August, plus he’s got a new greatest solo hits album, “Photograph.” This is the first time any of the Beatles music or solo albums have been available as digital downloads. EMI has plans to release more Beatles catalog soon.

A double disc of John Lennon’s solo songs were recorded with today’s artists trying to reinterpret his music on the benefit album “Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign To Save Darfur.” The proceeds go to support Amnesty International.

Olivia Harrison, widow of former Beatle George Harrison, is executive producer of the reissue of the new Traveling Wilburys collection, Volumes One & Three. The Traveling Wilburys were George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne.

American Idol

A fellow blogger pointed out a post on the Los Angeles Times Entertainment blog section about American Idol. The title “Idol Tracker: A stool too far” caught our attention because it didn’t make any sense. So we had to read their post to find out what the heck they were posting about.

It was about Chikezie being eliminated from the show, and how amazing it is how the producers manage to stage these results episodes in new ways, and taking an hour to s-t-r-e-t-c-h o-u-t the announcement of who is going home that week.

We actually watched season seven when Jordin Sparks won the vote from runners up Blake Lewis and Melinda Doolittle. But it’s really difficult to watch American Idol this year, when most of the contestants can’t even sing on key, except for David Cook.

Guitar Hero Aerosmith this summer

Activision will have a new version of “Guitar Hero” this summer.

The popular video game will feature Aerosmith, in the new version called “Guitar Hero: Aerosmith.” It will feature about 30 Aerosmith songs, along with tracks from various opening acts for the classic rock band. Activision says the 30 songs will cover the 30 years the band has been around, reaching all the way back from high school up to today’s rock star status. The company has not said if they will offer a new controller or not, but they are working with the band on the new title.

Kai Huang, head of Activision’s RedOctane unit, which guides development of the franchise, told Reuters in an interview…

To recreate the sense of attending an Aerosmith concert, developers held motion-capture sessions with band members, including frontman Steven Tyler and lead guitarist Joe Perry. “As you play,” Huang said, “you’re going to be seeing Joe and Steven doing their moves onstage.”
