Happy Birthday to guitarist, vocalist Mark Farner, born on September 29, 1948 in Flint, Michigan. I remember Grand Funk Railroad as a huge band during my senior year. “I’m Your Captain (Closer To Home),” “We’re an American Band,” and “Mean Mistreater” were my favorite songs from that era.
1971 was a great year for rock n’ roll. The ‘Closer To Home’ album was the first album that I collected, and then a friend of mine turned me on to the “red album,” which was the band’s second album, released in 1969. That was the year the band came to the attention of Capitol Records after they played to 180,000 fans at the Atlanta International Pop Festival. Manager Terry Knight says they were the only unsigned act on that show, but that changed soon after when the band released their first album ‘On Time” on Capitol Records.
The original Grand Funk Railroad was said to be one of the first power rock trios…Mark Farner on guitar and vocals, drummer Don Brewer and Mel Schacher on bass.
Thanks Guys, for getting me closer to home!
