867-5309 on eBay

Isn’t it funny how some things come together?

I heard this Tommy Tutone song on the radio yesterday, “867-5309.”

Then this story came across the AP Newswire…After five years fielding thousands of phone calls to one of rock ‘n roll’s most celebrated phone numbers, disc jockey Spencer Potter is hanging up on Jenny.  Her seven digits are familiar to anyone who paid attention to pop music in the early 80′s, “867-5309,” immortalized by the band Tommy Tutone.  Potter is selling the phone number on eBay, and not for a song, either!

CNN also picked up the story…www.cnn.com/2009/SHOWBIZ/Music

The eighties, as an era for music, doesn’t get a lot of respect, but there were some great hits from that decade.  “867-5309″ was one of them.  I don’t remember any other hits from Tommy Tutone, but I do recall some great bands from the 80′s.  Devo, Quarterflash, Whitesnake, Talking Heads, The Cars, Ah-Ha, The Cult, Los Lobos, The Outfield, Blondie, Toto, Loverboy, Foreigner, U2, Huey Lewis & the News, Cheap Trick, Journey, Escape Club, Johnny Hates Jazz, Fine Young Cannibals, The Go Go’s, and Tears for Fears.

And the artists weren’t bad either…Robert Palmer, Rick Springfield, Billy Squier, Howard Jones, John Waite, and Hall & Oates.  That’s not all by a long shot, but it’s a start.  As far as CD compliations go, I like Rhino’s Billboard series because they go year by year, and they’re also available as a box set for each decade.

Who do you remember from the 80′s?
