Aretha Franklin

Happy Birthday to Aretha Franklin, who was born on March 25th, 1942.

I have a lot of respect for Aretha Franklin; she was the first queen of soul. Aretha is also the first female artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Aretha Franklin signed with Atlantic Records in 1967 and that’s when the hits really started. Her first hit single “I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You),” was produced by Jerry Wexler and recorded at Muscle Shoals Studios.

That was followed by “Respect” written by Otis Redding, who originally recorded the song. “Respect” hit # 1 on both pop and R&B charts making Aretha a huge crossover success. The following year she won the first Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for that song.

Other favorite hits: “Chain of Fools” and “Think”, which always reminds me of her great performance in the Blues Brothers movie, as Mrs. Matt Murphy, when she sang “Think” during the diner scene.
