Patchouli has released their latest CD “Terra Guitarra.”

Terra Guitarra is the 10th release from this acoustic duo, Bruce Heksel and his wife, Julie Patchouli.  Bruce says it’s “the landscape speaking through guitar.”

The CD is on their independent record label called Earthsign Records, and the album of all original compositions was recorded at Cricket Studios, their home studio. It’s the duo’s tenth full length album. The release also marks their tenth year performing together.  Their music is inspired by Leo Kottke, Paco de Lucia and Randy Rhodes, among others.

The amazing Sonny Landreth has a new album coming out on May 2oth. “From the Reach” is his new album of collaborations with other guitar greats. There are guest appearances by Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Vince Gill, Eric Johnson, Robben Ford, Dr. John and Jimmy Buffett.

Sonny had this to say about “From the Reach…”

“The guest thing/duet approach has already been done to no end. My hope was to make this different by writing songs specifically for each artist.

Because I’m so familiar with their styles, and they’ve all had such an impact on me, I used that connection to make these collaborations have chemistry.

I didn’t want this to sound like an album of ‘sit ins,’ I want it to sound more like these friends are in the band.”

The 31st Annual Dallas International Guitar Festival and MusicFest was awesome, as usual. We saw some new things this year, like Trillium’s new tube guitar amps. The design and cabinetry caught my eye, and their great tone caught my ears, so I stopped to chat. Scott told me this is Trillium’s debut at the Dallas Guitar Show and how excited the company is to introduce these beautiful looking and sounding guitar amps.

We were treated to a demo courtesy of two young players sitting at their booth, and the sound was everything you would expect from a class A tube amp. We’ve got a couple of pictures posted in our slide show. Of course there were lots of vintage guitars on display, and all of them commanding premium prices. But oh, the history in these axes! We saw signature guitars of Les Paul, George Harrison, Stevie Ray Vaughan, David Crosby, Jimmy Page, Chet Atkins, Richie Sambora, Paul Cotton of Poco, and Jermaine Jackson’s Victory Tour Bass.

The most interesting design is probably Junior Brown’s amazing Guit-Steel guitar, which was also on display. Check out his website juniorbrown.com and YouTube videos to see J. B. in action.

Also of note is the Texas Musicians Museum. Their booth reminded me just how many great artists are from the Lone Star State. Buddy Holly, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Jimmie and Stevie Ray Vaughan, Johnny and Edgar Winter, Janis Joplin, Boz Scaggs, Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard of ZZ Top, Don Henley; there’s just too many to mention here.
