Eric Johnson Up Close
Capitol/EMI Records/Vortexan Music is releasing the new Eric Johnson album December 7th. ‘Up Close’ features 15 new tracks from Texas guitarist Eric Johnson.
Upon previewing the album, I heard influences from Jeff Beck (complete with outer space sounds,) Texas blues, country picking ala Chet Atkins, and shredding akin to GTR.
It’s easy to recognize the signature sound of Eric Johnson, who gets such incredible tones out of his guitars, along with his kick ass band of Roscoe Beck on bass and Tommy Taylor on drums & percussion.
There’s also some serious guest talent on ‘Up Close;’ Steve Miller guests on vocals with Jimmie Vaughan playing guitar blues on “Texas,” Jonny Lang doing the vocals on “Austin,” and Sonny Landreth adding guitar licks on “Your Book,” which is dedicated to Eric’s dad.
HarmonyCentral & Musician’s Friend have posted a 3-part video interview with Eric Johnson talking about his long term recording studio project, Saucer Studios in Austin, Texas. Eric also gives us an inside glimpse of the gear he uses in the studio and on stage, like his signature Strats, along with a Gibson SG and 335, a stack of Fender Twin Reverbs and tweaked-out Marshall amps, plus some of the pedal board effects he uses like the echoplex, fuzz face and tube drivers.
Part 1: Eric Johnson talks about Saucer Studios and recording his new album “Up Close.”
Part 2: Eric Johnson talks about the writing and production process for his new album
