It was 20 years ago, on August 27th, 1990, when we lost Stevie Ray Vaughan in a fatal helicopter crash. SRV had just performed at a sold out concert at the Alpine Valley Music Theatre with Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray and brother Jimmie Vaughan.

His funeral in Oak Cliff, Dallas was attended by over 1500 family and friends, including brother Jimmie, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Dr. John, Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy and Stevie Wonder.

Ten years later Stevie Ray Vaughan was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame.

Today his legacy and music endures the test of time, with many major musicians citing SRV as an influence, including Eric Johnson, John Mayer, Doyle Bramhall II, Robert Randolph, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Colin James and Jonny Lang.

fender.com also has posted a fitting tribute to the legendary SRV.

electric-guitar-review.com reviewed the Stevie Ray Vaughan “Lenny” Tribute Stratocaster from Fender Guitars.

I’d like to acknowledge a birthday for singer, songwriter and guitarist John Hiatt, born August 20, 1952. Hiatt is one of the most interesting songwriters around today, he’s been nominated for eleven Grammy Awards.

In 2008 he was awarded Songwriter/Artist of the Year at the Nashville Music Awards; Hiatt also received the Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting from the Americana Music Association.

His 18 studio and 2 live albums range from this year’s The Open Road, to Hangin’ Around the Observatory in 1974.

Hiatt’s songs have reached into many different genres of music, and been covered by a diversity of artists including Bonnie Raitt, B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Linda Ronstadt, Jimmy Buffett, Three Dog Night and The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

Here’s a great performance of “Riding With the King” by John Hiatt and his band, with Sonny Landreth on slide guitar.

I’ve always been a Led Zeppelin fan, not only for Plant’s outrageous vocals, but also because I admire John Bonham’s uncanny sense of timing as a drummer.

One of my favorite Robert Plant solo projects is the short-lived Honeydrippers group, formed in 1984 with Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck. I love their cover of Roy Brown’s “Rockin’ At Midnight!”

I really like the Raising Sand album Plant did with Alison Krauss, so did a lot of people because it won a Grammy in 2009.

Baker is one of many drummers who were first influenced by jazz, made their fortunes in rock, and went back to playing in a jazz trio in their later years.

Video from the Royal Albert Hall Cream reunion in May 2005; Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker performing “Toad.” This is probably his most famous drum solo.

Jimi Hendrix was inducted into the Fender Hall of Fame last Friday August 13th, in the fourth annual ceremony by the legendary guitar company.

Producer Eddie Kramer presented the award to Janie Hendrix, who is CEO of ExperienceHendrix LLC and head of the Hendrix estate. After giving tribute to the legendary musician, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Chris Layton performed Hendrix classics “Voodoo Child” and “I Don’t Live Today.”

George Fullerton was also honored during the ceremony, as a close friend of Leo Fender and one of the company’s original employees who was instrumental in creating several of Fender’s most important guitars, including the Telecaster, Stratocaster, Precision Bass and Jazz Bass.

Last year’s Hall of Fame ceremony honored James Jamerson, the legendary bassist who performed on most of Motown Record’s hits in the 1960′s and early 70′s. His instrument of choice was a stock 1962 Fender Precision Bass that was dubbed “The Funk Machine.”

Songwriter, singer and guitarist David Crosby, born August 14th, 1941, just celebrated his 69th birthday.

He’s a founding member of two very important classic rock groups, The Byrds and Crosby, Stills & Nash. There’s a cerebral quality in his music that I really connect with, like on a spiritual journey. Like on any of the songs on his 1971 solo debut album, If I Could Only Remember My Name.

Here’s David Crosby & Graham Nash performing the lovely “Guinnevere.”

Crosby’s lived an amazing life of highs and lows, documented in his autobiography Long Time Gone.

“Sunny” was certified a gold single after selling over one million copies, and is one of the most covered popular songs in the BMI catalog, who rates the song #25 in their Top 100 songs of the century.

Now that it’s August and the daily temperatures are soaring over 100, I’m thinking about the best songs of summer. Some are written about summer, and others just have that summertime feeling.

Do any of these tunes remind you of a cool summer memory?

”Summertime Blues” was written in the late 1950′s by the late great Eddie Cochran and his manager Jerry Capehart, and peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 on September 29, 1958.

The song’s been covered by the Beach Boys, The Who, Blue Cheer, Olivia Newton-John, T. Rex, Brian Setzer, Alan Jackson and by Cheech Marin in his 1987 comedy film Born in East L.A.

Theme From “A Summer Place” Percy Faith, written by Mack Discant and Max Steiner for the 1959 film A Summer Place, Percy Faith recorded the most popular version of the tune, which spent 9 consecutive weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in early 1960.

“A Summer Song” Chad & Jeremy, their 2nd single hit #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1964.

”Summer in the City” this hit single by The Lovin’ Spoonful came from their album, Hums of the Lovin’ Spoonful, and hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on August 13th, 1966.

One of the happiest sounds in music is the old 30′s and 40′s style of boogie woogie piano. I first heard that sound on a record by Canned Heat, ‘Living the Blues’ from 1968 on Liberty Records.

John Mayall performed on the piano on a barrelhouse blues piano number called “Bear Wires,” which is part of the 20-minute suite called “Parthenogenesis.” For me, this is the best album Canned Heat ever recorded.

Thanks to my Facebook friend John Penney for calling attention to one of today’s foremost boogie woogie and stride piano players in the world, Bob Seeley.

Bob Seeley and Bob Baldori have teamed up and recreated that fabulous piano sound of barrelhouse blues, boogie woogie and jazz swing on their new album, ‘Boogie Stomp!’ on Spirit Records.

There’s some great videos and a lot more information on their website boogiebob.com.

The piano duo is also filming a documentary; their website boogiestomp.com describes how it’s all coming together…

Boogie Stomp! documents how the basic elements of boogie woogie – rhythm and improvisation over a blues form – became the backbone of American music. It is an exploration of the relationship between blues, jazz, boogie, swing, stride, rock, R & B and contemporary pop music.

I was talking with another drummer the other day and he mentioned the name of Shadow Wilson, a drummer that I didn’t know. So naturally I had to look up his name and find out about him. As a musician, I’m always interested in how playing styles develop, and who influenced who.

drummerworld.com says Shadow Wilson had an upbeat kind of swing, a kind of dancing drumbeat that orchestras like Count Basie and Woody Herman really dug. Shadow Wilson also worked with Thelonious Monk and Ella Fitzgerald.

After reading through the sketchy information found on Shadow Wilson, it appears he influenced generations of jazz drummers, namely Frankie Dunlop (who played with Maynard Ferguson and Duke Ellington) and Elvin Jones (who played with the John Coltrane Quartet, and also with Charles Mingus and Miles Davis.)

Here’s the really cool part of this story…Elvin Jones’ jazz style of drumming influenced Mitch Mitchell, who rocked the drumkit with Jimi Hendrix with a definite jazz style of rock drumming. Ginger Baker also liked Jones style, and led his own jazz band later in his career.

Per Wikipedia…
Elvin Jones’ sense of timing, polyrhythms, dynamics, timbre, and legato phrasing brought the drumset to the foreground. Jones was touted by Life Magazine as “the world’s greatest rhythmic drummer”, and his free-flowing style was a major influence on many leading rock drummers, including Mitch Mitchell (whom Jimi Hendrix called “my Elvin Jones”) and Ginger Baker.

Shadow Wilson is the featured drummer on the classic 1957 jazz album Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane.

Please note: just because I got this information from amazon.com doesn’t mean it’s always accurate; it’s common knowledge that street dates change all the time, due to manufacturing, fulfillment and other factors. I do try to include links to the authoritative source whenever possible, like the artist’s or record label website.

We were watching the DVD of the 2nd Crossroads Guitar Festival. Sheryl Crow was singing “Tulsa Time” with Eric Clapton and we were wondering who wrote the song. So I googled it and it turns out my first two guesses of J.J. Cale or Leon Russell were both wrong.

“Tulsa Time” was actually written by songwriter, guitarist and recording artist Danny Flowers. The song has been recorded by a diversity of artists like Eric Clapton and Don Williams.

Danny Flowers might not be a familiar name, but he’s written many hits for other artists, such as “Back In My Younger Days” recorded by Don Williams, and “Before Believing” recorded by Emmylou Harris on her album Pieces Of The Sky.

“Gulf Coast Highway” recorded by Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson and Nanci Griffith, was co-written by Flowers with Griffith and keyboardist James Hooker.

Danny Flowers’ latest album is Tools For The Soul, and features Emmylou Harris on background vocals.

Flowers has also recorded and toured with Dobie Gray, Don Williams, Nanci Griffith and Vince Gill.

Visit your local Gibson and Epiphone dealer for Gibson Day, every last Saturday of the month.

Enter to win a Gibson guitar and earn a free Gibson fan shirt when you test drive a Gibson guitar, tomorrow June 26th.

Find a participating guitar dealer near you on Gibson Guitars website, or try a little online shopping at guitarramble.com.

Also look for the Gibson Custom, Art & Historic Division’s Traveling Exhibit at guitar and music festivals around the country. It’s a 40-foot showroom on wheels, full of guitars from the Gibson Custom Shop and you can play any every one of them.

I’ve seen this exhibit at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival and the Dallas International Guitar Festival, and it’s really impressive.

So we started the day listening to his 2nd solo album, Wired. Produced by George Martin in 1976, the album featured Jan Hammer on synthesizer and Narada Michael Walden on drums. Wired followed Beck’s groundbreaking 1st solo ablum, Blow by Blow (1975.)

Beck’s latest album Emotion & Commotion was released in April, and features vocalists Joss Stone and Imelda May, Tal Wilkenfeld and Pino Palladino on bass, Vinnie Colaiuta on drums, and Jason Rebello on keyboards.
