The final installment of the Genesis Box Set Series is now available. Genesis 1970-1975 Box Set is a seven-CD, six-DVD boxed set containing five studio albums from 1970 to 1975. Rhino Entertainment has done a nice job on this series by including bonus audio and video, plus an “Extras” disc of rarities, photo galleries, tour memorabilia and interviews. The original albums are remastered on CD and DVD with 5.1 DTS and Dolby Digital Surround Sound mixes, which is great to hear this material in, since this set covers the band’s early years.

This set defines progressive rock from the early seventies, as presented by the premier art rock band of that time, Genesis. Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Phil Collins and Mike Rutherford created some of their most “theatrical” albums, which included Trespass, Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England By The Pound and the double album The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway.

Not only did the band’s sound change drastically during these formative years, but the personnel underwent some changes too. Their second album, Trespass, came out in 1970 and featured guitarist Anthony Phillips and drummer John Mayhew, who were replaced on the following album in 1971, Nursery Cryme, by Steve Hackett and Phil Collins respectively.

1972′s Foxtrot was considered a breakthrough album by critics and fans. The opus “Supper’s Ready” became an avant-garde showcase for each member’s individual talents. This new DVD includes a nice extra; over 30 minutes of live video from 1972 of the band performing on Belgian television’s Rock of the 70s and on stage at the Piper Club in Italy.

Genesis’ fifth studio album, Selling England By The Pound, from 1973, had the band’s first hit single in the U.K., “I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe.)” DVD extras include vintage video from 1973 performances on Italian television and on stage in France.

The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway in 1974 is remembered fondly for many reasons. Not only was it their first double album, but it was also Peter Gabriel’s final album with the group. Of course, the tour for this album pulled out all the stops, performing the entire ninety-minute album in their most theatrical stage show yet, with costume changes, special lighting and pyrotechnics.

The Extras disc of rarities includes:
“Happy The Man” (7-inch single)
“Going Out To Get You” (demo)
“Twilight Alehouse” (B-side)
“Shepherd,” “Pacidy” and “Let Us Now Make Love” (from the BBC programme Nightride)
VH1 Boxed Set Special on Genesis 1967-1975 and a performance from the Midnight Special.
“Provocation,” “Frustration,” “Manipulation,” & “Resignation” (from the legendary “Genesis Plays Jackson” tapes, a 1970 documentary about painter Mick Jackson.)
