Gregg Allman just turned sixty years old on December 8th. But he’s “not about to let them catch up with the midnight rider.”
The Allman Brothers Band is one of my favorites from way back to 1970. From their first album Beginnings, I was a big fan. Songs like “Dreams” & “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” were instant smash hits, along with the unforgettable “Midnight Rider.” His keyboard work layered the band’s sound just right for the twin guitars of Duane and Dickey Betts.
Gregg is the heart and soul and voice of the Allman Brothers. He and his brother Duane made some amazing music, together and with special guests Eric Clapton in Derek and the Dominos. “Layla” was their big hit together, featuring the twin slide guitar sound that became their trademark in that band and on that album.
