The 52nd Annual Grammy Awards show was long and sometimes boring, but it’s always great to see such great artists performing together.

First I gotta say I was really pleased to see Neil Young named as the 2010 MusiCares Person of the Year. Young was honored with an all-star tribute last Friday by Dave Matthews, Elton John, Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris, Leon Russell, Norah Jones, Sheryl Crow and Stephen Stills, among others.

Best New Artist award went to the Zac Brown Band. What a thrill to see them perform with the legendary Leon Russell.

20-year-old Taylor Swift won her first three Grammys, Best Female Country Vocal and Best Country Song, for her single “White Horse,” and she captured the big prize, Album of the Year. Her duet with Stevie Nicks was really cool, I just wish they had stayed on key.

Best Comedy Album went to host Stephen Colbert. He’s no George Carlin, but I enjoy his show.

Record of the Year went to Kings of Leon, presented by Norah Jones and Ringo Starr. What an honor to have your Grammy Award presented by one of The Beatles.

Dave Matthews Band performance was great with so many artists on stage, plus the string section.

The tribute to the great Les Paul with Jeff Beck was awesome! Imelda May was so glamorous the way she sang “How High the Moon.” I really like the way the Grammy producers present an In Memoriam of artists who have passed away in the past year.

EW.com posted some great news about Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. The two surviving Beatles will perform together again, along with Ben Harper, Bettye Lavette, Donovan, Eddie Vedder, Jim James, Moby, Paul Horn and Sheryl Crow.

The Charity Begins Within concert is a benefit for the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness Based Education and World Peace, and takes place on April 4th.

Wow, will all that fit on a business card? What’s it mean?

The David Lynch Foundation promotes transcendental meditation (TM) in schools, and this concert aims to involve over a million children worldwide in a global introduction to the simple natural technique of TM.

This will be the first time Paul and Ringo have performed together since 2002. But they’re not strangers to TM. They both studied transcendental meditation in 1968 under Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, when they trekked to India along with George Harrison and John Lennon. Remember? They were just trying to get some peace. Then they wrote and recorded the white album. Savoy Truffle, anyone?

Paul McCartney is keeping busy these days. Age has not slowed down the popular composer, as he is gearing up for two major musical events this spring.

McCartney is teaming up with other like minded artists Donovan, Eddie Vedder, Moby, Paul Horn and Sheryl Crow, to perform a benefit concert on Saturday, April 4th at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall. The concert will benefit the David Lynch Foundation and it’s international initiative in teaching one million children across the globe the art and technique of TM, Transcendental Meditation.
www.davidlynchfoundation.org/

McCartney will also perform at this year’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, April 17th through the 19th. Macca onstage will be quite a departure from the usual Coachella fare, but promoters are splitting the odds the alternative music festival will continue to attract almost 150,000 fans, especially with the former Beatle in this year’s lineup.

Now here’s a unlikely pairing. YahooNews posted a story yesterday that suggested Sheryl Crow may be working with Fleetwood Mac soon.

“I don’t want to make any official announcements, but I will say that we definitely have plans for collaborating in the future, and we’ll see what happens,” Crow told the AOL music Web site Spinner.com in a story posted Thursday. Crow said she looked forward to working with friend Stevie Nicks.
Source: Yahoo News

It’s also been reported that Stevie Nicks would not continue with Fleetwood Mac without Christine McVie, who has retired from touring with the band. The band’s last tour was in 2004.

So what would we call the new band, if these two join up? Fleetwood Crow? Crow’s Fleet?

Wait and see…meanwhile, Sheryl Crow is busy promoting her newest album “Detours.”

I finally got all the way through this double DVD set from Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival. This massive one day concert took place in Chicago last July, which is the second get together of these guitar legends. This follows slowhand’s first guitar festival, which stretched over a three day weekend in Dallas in 2004.

The idea then and now was to get together all the best players, have fun and raise funds to benefit the Crossroads Centre in Antigua. This DVD is a must have for all guitar and music fans! (Just like the previous DVD, also a double-disc.)

Featuring:
Bill Murray as emcee
Eric Clapton playing host & guitar (with just about everybody)
Steve Winwood
Sonny Landreth
John McLaughlin
Doyle Bramhall II
Susan Tedeschi
The Derek Trucks Band
Johnny Winter
Robert Randolph & the Family Band
Robert Cray Band
Jimmie Vaughan
Hubert Sumlin
B.B. King
Vince Gill
Albert Lee
Sheryl Crow
Willie Nelson

Highlights:
Disc 1:
Sonny Landreth opens the show with a pair of red hot tunes with some smokin’ slide guitar playin’ plus a duet with Clapton. Landreth’s highly skilled style doesn’t get nearly the attention it deserves. His playing is right up there with Steve Vai & Derek Trucks.

The Derek Trucks Band with Susan Tedeschi sure picked some great songs to play, like the Junior Wells & Buddy Guy classic “Little by Little” and “Anyday” by Derek & the Dominos. I saw Derek Trucks tour with Clapton last year and his slide playing just blows me away, much like Duane Allman’s did.

There’s a great interview with Johnny Winter, who looks ancient, but did a blistering version of “Highway 61 Revisited” with the Derek Trucks Band, who looked honored to play with such a legend. There were smiles all around the stage on this one.

Disc 2:
Jeff Beck with an amazing band holds the crowd speechless! They rip through two songs “Cause We’ve Ended As Lovers” and “Big Block.” (YouTube Video) Tal Wilkenfeld on bass is simply spellbounding (only 21 years old and touring with Jeff Beck!) There’s Vinnie Colaiuta on drums (Wow!) and Jason Rebello on keyboards rounding out the band.
Clapton honors George Harrison by performing “Isn’t It A Pity.”

Steve Winwood and Eric Clapton perform four songs together…
“Presence Of The Lord, Can’t Find My Way Home, Had To Cry Today & Crossroads.”
We all flash back to the Blind Faith days of 1969.

Winwood also performs his classic Traffic track “Dear Mr. Fantasy.” This night is magic.

The perfect end to the perfect concert…an all star finale with Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, Robert Cray, John Mayer, Hubert Sumlin, Jimmie Vaughan and Johnny Winter performing “Sweet Home Chicago.”

The DVD Bonus Extra is Tab Benoit playing with Skunk Baxter and Harvey Mandel (Canned Heat.) There’s plenty more in this 2 DVD set; it’s over four hours of great material.

Don’t just take my word for it; there’s plenty of other rave reviews online. amazon.com link

YouTube music video channels are a growing trend among artists. It’s something we’ve begun to take notice of, as we’ve come across more and more artists, bands and groups making their presence known online with their videos.

Not only musicians are taking advantage of this medium, but the major record labels and independents are also using YouTube are alternate video distribution channels. One of the cool features I like about the YouTube subscriptions are the email updates with links to the latest added videos.

In an interesting twist to this ongoing online video saga, TV’s are now being designed with internet content in mind. That could put online video sites like YouTube and GoogleVideo in even stronger positions for the future, don’t you think?

Here’s a short article from smartmoney.com about the new TV’s.

I searched the Musician Channels on YouTube and found the following
“The song ‘Love Is Free’ is inspired by New Orleans. What struck me about it is the stoicism of the New Orleans people; they are spiritually based. You can see it in their eyes that they aren’t going to give up, they are going to rebuild.”

That’s because she’s the latest music celebrity to be affected by breast cancer. Crow is currently recovering from minimally invasive surgery for breast cancer, that was performed on February 22nd. Her doctors say her prognosis is excellent and should make a full recovery. Her label has stated she will be undergoing radiation treatment as a precaution.

Sheryl Crow has postponed her North American tour that was scheduled for March through April. Details of that announcement are on her website.

The Grammy award winning singer has just turned 44. She was seen signing autographs in Hollywood just one week after surgery.

“I am inspired by the brave women who have faced this battle before me and grateful for the support of family and friends,” she said in a written statement. “I am joining the more than 200,000 women who will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year.”

There was a Power Benefit recently in Beverly Hills, where Sheryl Crow was the talk of the town. The all star benefit included (among others) Natalie Cole, Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Melissa Etheridge, who received the EIF Women’s Cancer Research Fund Courage Award. Etheridge is also a breast cancer survivor, who rocked last year’s Grammy audience with a clean shaven head. Past recipients of the EIF award include Sir Elton John and Stella McCartney.

Lance Armstrong, who recently split with Crow, overcame testicular cancer years ago and founded Livestrong SurvivorCare.

Crow’s most recent album, the Grammy nominated “Wildflower,” was inspired by their relationship.
