Leon Russell 1942 – 2016

Rest in Peace Leon Russell……”Master of space and time”

www.leonrussellrecords.com  has this posted about Leon Russell…

“I love you in a place where there’s no space or time

I love you for my life you are a friend of mine

And when my life is over

Remember when we were together

We were alone and I was singing this song to you”

(Lyrics from “Song For You”)

Some of my favorite Leon Russell projects included…

the Delaney & Bonnie and Friends band and tour in ’69 & ’70, where Leon played guitar and piano.  This was a killer band filled with exceptional talent, which also interested and later involved George Harrison and Eric Clapton.

Joe Cocker’s Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour, double album and movie in 1970.

The Concert for Bangladesh concert and album, with Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, George Harrison and Ringo Starr.

And of course, his Shelter Records label, complete with space choir, tour and albums.

Also of note, wikipedia.org states that on September 11, 2015, Leon Russell joined alumni, Rita Coolidge, Claudia Lennear, Chris Stainton and other members of the 1970 Joe Cocker Mad Dogs and Englishmen Tour for a special tribute concert to Joe Cocker organized by the Tedeschi Trucks Band.  Original tour photographer, Linda Wolf documented the reunion and performance.  A full documentary of the reunion and performance was released in early 2016, directed by Jesse Lauter and Jojo Pennebaker, son of D.A. Pennebaker.
