Record Store Day April 19
Retail Music Stores will be promoting themselves against the “dinosaur” stereotype of the dying media outlet on April 19th, in a nationwide crusade known as “Record Store Day.”As reported on Reuters and in Billboard, these independent music stores will be promoting special sale priced CD’s, as well as giving away special incentives like videos, DVD and vinyl records.
Our friend Dave at classicrock.about.com posted a great article about Record Store Day, a list of participating retail stores, and his memories of independent record shops.
List of Record Stores participating in Record Store Day
My earliest memory was from fifth grade, when there was a little donut shop with a jukebox, right next to my elementary school. If I arrived early enough for school some mornings, I could duck into the shop for a quick donut and hear the latest Beatle records spinning on the old jukebox. Man the sound of those old Wurlitzers was awesome. Plus the shop sold the latest hit singles, and you could sit at the counter and ogle the latest Beatle stuff on display. It wasn’t your typical record store, but it served the same purpose; of giving local music fans a place to meet, listen to the latest hits, and browse the new records of gleaming vinyl singles in their crisp new wrappers.
Also newsworthy: Billboard reports the group Metallica will make their first in-store appearance in almost ten years as part of Record Store Day, at Rasputin Music in Mountain View, CA.

Great memory, Mike. There’s nothing like the sound of a Wurlitzer for sure!
