Ronnie James Dio 1942 – 2010
A short heartfelt message from Wendy Dio on ronniejamesdio.com says it all. Ronnie James Dio passed away on Sunday May 16th from stomach cancer.
We always enjoyed Dio’s powerful vocals with Rainbow and Black Sabbath, especially “Man on the Silver Mountain.” He also sang with Elf and fronted his own band, Dio.
His latest project was titled Heaven & Hell, a collaboration featuring Black Sabbath members Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler, along with drummer Vinny Appice. They recorded and toured together as Black Sabbath from 1980 to 1982, and again from 1991 to 1992.
Heaven & Hell recorded three new songs for the compilation album, Black Sabbath: The Dio Years, in 2006 and toured from 2007 to 2008. Tony Iommi, who owns the Black Sabbath name, decided to call the touring group Heaven & Hell to set the project apart from the Ozzy Osbourne fronted Black Sabbath.
