One of my favorite drummers-slash-singers is celebrating a birthday. Don Henley is sixty-one years old today (July 22.) I’ve been an Eagles fan since their very first album in 1972. Their harmonies and the varied instrumentation used in the band really captured my ears. That may be the first time I [...]
As you may have heard by now, Rod Stewart confirmed last week that all the surviving members of his old band, the Faces (including current Rolling Stone Ron Wood and former Who drummer Kenny Jones), are planning to reunite for at least a tour next summer. Could this be a case of Rod redeeming himself? Well, perhaps. I did mention in an earlier post that the best thing Rod could do at this point in his career was record a quick album with Wood and a tight rhythm and horn section. This is prob
I went to Stogie’s funeral today. More formally known as Wayne Campbell, Stogie succumbed to prostate cancer on Saturday at the age of 62. He outlived his prognosis by three years, which surprised nobody. Stogie was a fighter. He was tough. Although I believe we originally met decades ago at the Alex Hotel, I knew Stogie primarily through Irene’s Pub, where he was a well-loved regular. Our years of being regulars at Irene’s didn’t overlap, so we never got to know each other as well as I would
ESPN's Dana O'Neil takes a good look at a topic that's college basketball's not-so-secret dirty secret. But it is hard to get folks to talk on record about the underbelly of the sport, which makes this piece worth your time. We're talking the shadiness in recruiting. The impression - even if it's all technically legal by NCAA rules - is that coaches will find whatever means necessary to lure the top recruits they need to keep their jobs. Hire former summer-league coaches as assistants. Hire sa

I sure hope we get the 10 inches that my friend got last night!! My boys want to play outside more now, than in summer. Since I took this picture about and hour ago, it started coming down harder. The grass is almost completely covered and the flakes have gotten so big. NOW, it can be Christmas time!! I have gotten emails over the summer asking how our kittens are doing. As you can see, we do not have kittens anymore...LOL. I bet you can't even tell which one is the momma. The
Every Wednesday we have family night. During the summer this seems to dissipate due to longer hours in the day and an abundance of activities but as it gets cooler we fall right back into the swing of things. We take turns letting each family member pick out what we will have for dinner and what at-home activities we will do. Sometimes we play board games, other times we watch a video or play the Wii. I always win. Okay, I win most of the time. :) Somewhere along the way the boys all began cho

Rather than sit back and ride the wave of success from 2006’s platinum, Grammy-nominated 15, which includes the monster hit “Crazy Bitch” (just the mention of the song and it’s stuck in your head!), California boys Buckcherry are back with Black Butterfly, a no holds barred album featuring 12 hard-hitting tracks. PopWreckoning, partly due to the impending holiday season, partly (mostly) because we love to give fun stuff to you, our darling readers, we’ve got a Buckcherry album and poster to

Mike Moreau of HOOPSWORLD: “Now as we compare both in the current day, with LeBron in Year 6 and Kobe in Year 13, Kobe is still the better individual defender and a consistently better foul shooter. James is the better rebounder, passer and a more dominant physical presence. He has also consistently been a better teammate and better leader. Last shot to win the game? Right now, it’s The Black Mamba. No one strikes more fear at crunch time, which may be the best comparison of all when trying to

Lots of layers for this week’s creativity contest prompt, “quilt.” So wrap yourself up and have a cozy read. Our winner is Cathy Coley, who wrote a personal essay with unfettered honesty. Congratulations, Cathy (defending champion!). Your $10 amazon.com gift certificate has been issued. Quilt Quilts are heavy. I love sleeping under them, but for me they are weighted by memories of grief and struggle. One person comes to mind whenever I see a quilt because she was an award-winning master quilter
1. Best friends were all the thing in my high school days. You were only allowed to have one best friend, but, ever the rebel, I had several! What about you? Tell us about your high school best friend(s). +Haven’t seen a few of them since we graduated high school! Some, I heard they got married and settled in another country. Some, I saw when I went home last summer. But my bestest friend L, got married with 3 kids. She was kinda a rebel but not that very bad though. She’s amazing. I will alwa
Lawrence Booth: England must consider Prior re-engagement Posted in November 19th, 2008 by Lawrence Booth in England, England in India, One-day cricket It’s funny how quickly perceptions change in cricket, especially where the ever-fraught England team is concerned. Only a couple of months ago we were all saying that Matt Prior’s return to the one-day side at the expense of Tim Ambrose was making a difference: runs at the one end of the order, a shorter tail at the other. Now, following his
The forthcoming Hay Festival Winter Weekend , which shall be held from the 28th to the 30th of this month, brought to mind my adventures this summer and had me reminiscing on our weekend’s exploits. The annual Guardian Hay festival is held 180 miles west of London, right on the border with Wales. The village of Hay-on-Wye is largely literary, and said to house more than a million used books. I had planned a two-day jaunt to this haven for the intelligentsia with three good friends, Vaness
Green Dot Update Posted November 19th, 2008 at 05:47 AM by B is for Business in Education I had posted on July 6th of this year about Locke High School and Green Dot. At Locke High School in LA, they kicked out the teacher union. It was not easy. I had submitted a post about this topic on July 6th. On July 23rd, the LA Times wrote an article worth reading. While you're doing that, take a look at their website. Not bad. There hasn't been a fight yet, says Michael McElveen, ano
November 19, 2008 Posts by Allen | Tags: firewood, Wood cutting | For the vast majority of our 29 winters together, Janis and I have heated our home with wood. This was not done because we had no other options but because it just made sense. Our first home was only one year old and had a new natural gas furnace that worked quite well. It also had a fireplace which sent more heat up and out the chimney than it ever pumped into the house, so it wasn’t long before I ripped out the fireplace
