Buddy Miles passed away this week and we will certainly miss him and his unique style.
Buddy spent time playing with a lot of great musicians over the years including Jimi Hendrix and Carlos Santana. His voice was so unique that [...]
I don’t always blog about it, but the PhotoFridays project that Bonnie started up continues to be a source of great interest. Simply put, participants (and you are invited!) add photos via Flickr to the PhotoFridays group, and then write comments and share ideas, etc. It’s a nice way to mix the visual with the written word. Bonnie has now launched a project within PhotoFridays in which we are mailing around a pair of California Raisin figurines. When we get them, we take photos of them in our
i don't know if i could of had a better, albeit normal day.i started the day off as usual, homework in the morning from 7:30am-10...caught a little of the view (this is rare) and then the kids were up and our day began. we had breakfast together as usual...nothing special...toast and honey for me...cereal, toast, cashews and raisins for them... and then we started our lessons. and it went great...again, though normal...what was great was sitting there watching them, and getting outside of mysel
Dear Gregorus readers, This is Orlowski, a newly-appointed guest author for Gregorus. I’ll be contributing this weekend about my trip to Blizzcon in Anaheim, CA. Try to keep up! It’s 6:30, way too early to be up. Not only am I up, but I am already at the Dulless airport waiting to board my flight. My typical schedule involves consciousness no earlier than 8:45 am, but today I’m going to California. The thought of the 5 hour nap in the sky is keeping me going long enough to eat my bacon egg and c
I was recently searching through my old posts when I happened upon an unpublished outline of recommended classical/symphonic music recordings. Compounded with several other events of the day, the barebones post got me thinking: what makes symphonic music recordings so different than those of popular music? It’s a multifaceted question, and one that I think deserves some attention. I’m going to gloss over some of my thoughts, as many of them would require volumes of posts of their own. First

The soundtrack of the 2008 campaign is pretty wide, and with videos, can be pretty colorful. Here are two music videos, one for Obama and one for McCain. The first features some amazing childrens' voices, and while the lyrics aren't all that inspired, it's easy on the eyes and ears -- except, apparently to some conservatives who see shades of small children singing the praises of Mao or Kim Jung Il, or the Hitler youth movement. That's seems a real stretch, but see for yourself, unless you fear

We really did find our study of California very interesting. California is a large and diverse state, so there was a lot to learn! We were able to find quite a few interesting books from the library and we had a lot of fun reading. First a few facts:California became a state on September 9, 1850The capital is SacramentoThe state bird is the California QuailThe state flower is the Golden PoppyThe state tree is the California RedwoodCalifornia contains the tallest, biggest and oldest trees in th
I’ve always had mixed feelings about Halloween. Mostly because I think that scary masks and sugar highs make for a bad combination. That’s not to say that we won’t celebrate with my son. We plan on carving a pumpkin, dressing my son up and taking him to our local harvest festival since he’s too young to trick or treat. According to the National Retail Federation, Halloween spending for 2008 is estimated to reach $5.77 billion this year. That is a lot of costumes, candy, decorations and was
October 5, 2008 Uncategorized I have a fall gift for you, and it’s a beauty! I’ve been traveling for the past several weekends and this was my first one home in awhile. As it turns out, it was my husband’s turn to go away on his bi-annual MAN weekend which is a story for another time. Tess had a birthday party all day Saturday, so it was the perfect opportunity to hang out with this guy: Doesn’t he look like a good time? He is! But his arms aren’t nearly that long in real life. Nor are
Well, weekdays are rocketing by with no chance to blog at all. I have any number of posts I'd like to write, but I'm afraid I'm just going to have to jam what I can into the weekends. I spent most of today getting all my hair cut off (donated to Locks of Love) and Internet shopping for winter clothes for Katydid, now that I can't ignore the fact that summer is over -- it was a damp 50 degrees today and we had our fist fire in the woodstove. But I wanted to get this post out before it was old
Every food event in blogosphere is incomplete without a round-up. So may I present to you all the round-up to Nandita’s Weekend Breakfast Blogging which I guest hosted in September? It wasn’t easy picking a theme, because everytime I would come up with a fantastic idea, I would find that a previous host had announced it. So I finally came up with this theme, announced it and then found that Suganya of Tasty Palettes had just announced Whole grain as her theme for JFI. Well, I guess great minds d
Yesterday I wrote about the progress I have made towards achieving the 105 goals I set for myself on January 1st of this year. The terms specify that I must accomplish everything by October 28th, 2010, or 1,001 days from when I started. Without a doubt, my favorite goal stipulates that I must consume five new beers every month. I like that way more than trying new foods, or drinking 50 ounces of water every day. Admittedly, I began at a disadvantage because I've already tried so many great beers
Sunday. Rain clouds threatened. No matter. We traveled up to Lenox to visit The Mount, the one time abode of Edith Wharton. The immense continues to be lovingly restored. The first floor has been completed with the crowning glory of acquiring her books from her days in France and installing them in the library. I also liked the dining room, complete with pillows for her dogs as well as the butler's pantry. The upstairs still requires restoration as well as furnishings, but the various states of r
Yes, I’m having a Petite Sirah week. I think it began this past weekend, when I wrote a story for Appellation American on Petite Sirah. Roger Dial and his crew just tasted through a lot of Petites, in order to begin to understand how Petite Sirah does in each AVA, establishing benchmarks from their gold and Silver Medal winners. I wrote a blog in the past that involved Roger Dial, Clark Smith, Dan Berger, and Roger King - who’s since become their new VP of marketing. Another Wine Competition…
Last year, the Eat Local Challenge happened in September, but this year it’s been moved to October, pitting would-be food mile cutters against international fair trade activists! Kidding — Many fair trade activists are local food advocates too, and vice versa. The idea’s to get most of your food locally and in season — then opting for fair trade for goodies that aren’t produced locally — coffee or chocolate, say. As usual, I had Equal Exchange fair trade coffee, bought at Co-opportunity, with
As many of you may know, the San Joaquin Valley in California is known for it's wonderful table grapes, as well as wine grapes and those dried for raisins. This is my September doll for the Beaded Art Dolls Calendar Challenge. She was fun to do and went together really fast. I made her this afternoon. I put a pin/pendant clasp on her so I can wear her either way. Only eleven more to go this year. LOLI am slowly catching up with all my WIP's. I hate it when I get in a slump. All I wanted to do wa
Eric S. sent us a link to the webpage for the Sun-Maid Girl, the girl used to represent Sun-Maid raisins. Here is the original painting of the first Sun-Maid Girl, Lorraine Collett Peterson: The logo was most recently updated in 1970; here is the current incarnation: In discussing the original painting, the website says, Sometimes we forget that in 1915 there were no electric hair dryers, that television would not be invented for decades to come, and that automobiles were not in every ho
