Tom Dowd & the Language of Music

April 11th, 2008
By Mike

This DVD is a fascinating look behind the board, inside the studio, and into the heart and soul of the music we all know and love. Again I have to say, if you’re really into collecting music, this is a historical document and a must have for any fan of classic rock, R&B and jazz. Tommy was there, in the right place, at the right time, making music magic for over fifty years.
Tom Dowd achieved many outstanding technical high points during his distinguished career in the music business as recording engineer, arranger and producer. His work with Atlantic and Stax Records is legendary, as is his pioneering work with eight-track recording.
‘Tom Dowd & the Language of Music’ features appearances by the Allman Brothers Band, Eric Clapton, Les Paul, Ray Charles, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Aretha Franklin.
Here’s a short list of some of my favorite hit songs & albums that Tom Dowd produced & recorded:
Singles:
“Walkin’ the Dog” by Rufus Thomas
“Good Lovin” by The Rascals
“Mr. Bojangles” by Jerry Jeff Walker
“Son Of A Preacher Man” by Dusty Springfield
Albums:
Disraeli Gears & Wheels Of Fire by Cream
The Allman Brothers Band at Fillmore East & Eat A Peach
Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs …

I was reading one of the best informed and brutally honest music industry blogs around today, “The Lefsetz Letter” at lefsetz.com/wordpress when I came across Bob’s post about the famous Caribou Ranch Studio in Colorado.
It’s a fascinating story about the many famous hit artists who recorded there; Joe Walsh, John Lennon & Chicago, just to name a few.The Rocky Mountain News has some great articles and video about it here…

Zambrano wins his 13th game and hits a home run

The Chicago Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday and won the three game series by two games to one. It was another hard fought battle between the two teams as the Cubs pulled out a 3-2 victory. Big Carlos Zambrano helped out his own cause as he hit the game winning home run in the fourt inning when he took Josh Fogg deep to the right-center bleachers. Zambrano went onto win the game on the mound as well as he pitched seven innings and improved to 13-5 on the year. Big Z had to work out of

The 1968 Democratic National Convention Revisited

This week's edition of the Chicago Reader is running an interesting review of Frank Kusch's Battleground Chicago—an unconventional look at the 1968 'police riots' at the Democratic National Convention. The event is infamous for the brutality of the police in attempting to control the groups of anti-war protesters demonstrating at the convention. But Kusch's book goes beyond this stereotypical image using seldom heard accounts of the event from the police's point of view to arrive at a more nu

Henry Horner Projects

Posted in: Chicago, IL by larry paros. I'm working on a documentary film on kids from poverty backgrounds who attended an experimental school I ran in 1967-68. I'm doing a follow-up on them 40 years later. One of the students grew up in the Henry Horner Projects and I need access to photos of the projects for the film. Does anyone have access to them or to the photos on this website? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Larry Paros

Obama Should Clear The "Ayers" On Annenberg Challenge

When Daley says shhh, library is quiet on Obama by John Kass of the Chicago Tribune notes that Barack Obama wants to reform Washington, DC and Kenya - but not the real corruption capital - Chicago, Illinois - home of Mayor Richard "Shortshanks" Daley, his protector - who has a library named after his papa - and who won't release documents about Barack Obama and Bill Ayers relationship on the Annenberg Challenge - as National Review's Stanley Kurtz found out. Daley has downplayed Ayers radical r

Icy Demons - Miami Ice

Miami Ice, the third effort by Chicago-based Icy Demons (comprised of Bablicon’s Griffin Rodriguez, here known as Blue Hawaii, and Man Man’s Christopher Powell, known as Pow Pow), is so enjoyable and effortless; it’s any wonder why the group hasn’t gained greater notoriety. Although disappointingly short, the album is brimming with such gorgeous material that it’s difficult not to enjoy. Miami Ice, the stunning single for which the album was named, is a perfect blend of Rodriguez’s deep yet qui

More Bad Chicago Cop News

Twelve minutes after off-duty Chicago police officer John Ardelean left a bar on Thanksgiving Day 2007, the officer broadsided a car, killing two men on Chicago's Northwest side. A judge dismissed DUI charges against Ardelean because of insufficient evidence. Prosecutors declined to bring any additional charges against the officer who is still employed by the department. The problem was that the officer would not submit to a sobriety test until 7 hours after the accident when a superior ordered

Barackbook update: Obama has new friends

As the run-up continues to next week's Democratic National Convention, Barack Obama has some new friends on the spoof-site, Barackbook. These include Valerie Jarrett, who like Barack and Michelle Obama, has ties to the University of Chicago, Code Pink extremist and Obama bundler Jodie Evans, Palestinian radical Ali Abunimah, and an Unnamed Philadelphia Street Organizer.
