Events like the Grammys are great learning moments. There’s so much more to most of these artists than their “hit songs.” Once you dig into their catalog and their roots, you find all kinds of things you may not have known before. But one thing’s for sure. This year’s [...]

2007 was an amazing year for classic rock! We flashed back to the Summer of Love in 1967 and celebrated musical milestones like the Monterey Pop Festival. We saw some of our favorite groups reunite for a world tour, like Genesis and Van Halen. And [...]

Dan Fogelberg, singer-songwriter-folk-rock-performer, passed away Sunday at age 56.
Fogelberg was another victim of prostate cancer, following Frank Zappa who also died prematurely from the same disease in 1993.
There’s an outpouring of emotion across the web and across the country for this gentle voice and beautiful soul, including pal Jackson Browne.
Some very moving words and advice [...]
With lyrics in style similar to John Denver or Dan Fogelberg sent in a voice some have said sounds like a mix of Judy Collins and Carly Simon, Bunny has written and recorded 350 songs with a guitar and Lakota flute. Her tones are as harmonious as an evening sky. This music is "medicine" for our times, heavily influenced by sacred Black Hills Native Spirit.
Bunny will join the Brass Ovary Sisterhood in Native Wisdom and the fascinating story of her musical history. G

I was driving this afternoon on my way to one of the malls and I have this habit of fiddling with the car stereo, not exactly knowing which station to listen to or what song I’m looking for. And then I heard a piano intro and I decided to listen to it because I had this feeling I was on to something good. And it was a very beautiful song indeed! So beautiful, I started crying… I craned my neck, turned off the airconditioner and listened intently to the lyrics. The narrator is browsing throug
I’ve often shared that I can’t think about Hell more than 5 or 6 seconds before I have to intentionally shut down the thought. It’s extremely unsettling and difficult for me to visit that place, even in thought. Some people have visited Hell and have been forever changed. I never made it there, but was grabbed by the ankles and dragged there… but woke up before I made it. You can read about it in my book The Terror of Hell. That short trip toward Hell caused me to pray most nights for 15
I promised to share my "Melancholia" playlist with you, once I had created it. I've gone through each and every suggestion that my kind readers made. Some I liked, some I didn't. Some I liked, but didn't feel they had the right "flavor" for my list. But I truly appreciated them all. I decided that rather than an entirely cheerless playlist, I would make one that is a medley of melancholia and mellowness. So some are sad, but some are not. Regardless, they are all smooth and soft and i
The decade you grow up in will always shine brighter in memory than the paler eras that follow, but as a 70s guy I try to be fair to the 1980s. That decade produced many memorable hits that have stood the test of time. Honesty compels me to report, however, that not many of them came from 1981, a year that threatened the chrome on trailer hitches everywhere. In 1981, the nature of Top 40 music was changing before our ears—the stylistic juxtapositions that were easy to abide in the 70s (”I Want Y
September Stroll Come walk with me. There's no need for a jacket just yet - the mornings are still warm and slightly humid. Put on your comfy shoes and we'll walk through the field and woods, to the creek. While we stroll along, see if you can guess which songs are represented by the snippets of lyrics written in pink, below each photo, and please remember to click on each of the images to enlarge them. 1 "The sun pours down like honey..." The whiskers don't lie: Time is catching up to Jackson Browne. Not too many singer/songwriters start their careers the way Jackson Browne did: issuing the four best studio albums of his career. He was 24 when he released his stellar rookie album, “Saturate Before Using.” By the time he released “The Pretender” four years later, he’d secured his niche on the ’70s folkie scale: way closer to Cat Stevens or Graham Nash than Dylan or even John Prine, but appreciably more respected than some of hi

I told you all about it. And some of you made it to the Lakewood Theater. The house was pretty near filled with just about every serious yoga practitioner in Dallas who didn't go to the Santana concert. Much of the event felt like a worship service because most of the singing was of mantras -- basically Hindu or Buddhist or Sikh prayers. And even for someone like me for whom Sanskrit is, um, a foreign language, it was a hugely entertaining event. Kudos to Earth Rhythms for pulling it off. Many
