This DVD is a fascinating look behind the board, inside the studio, and into the heart and soul of the music we all know and love. Again I have to say, if you’re really into collecting music, this is a historical document and a must have for any fan of classic rock, R&B [...]
IBMA Keynote Address available online posted by John on 10.11.08 @ 9:07 am Tags: Berklee, IBMA 2008 The IBMA has posted the text of the Keynote Address delivered by Berklee College of Music President Roger Brown at last week’s World Of Bluegrass Convention on their web site. His speech addressed two main themes: that the period when bluegrass music emerged was a time of uncertainly in the music business, and that many parallels could be drawn between the development of bebop jazz and
I am poor "replier" to your comments. Not because I don't want to reply. But because I have no system and had perhaps not enough time. Time I will have soon. And for the system, I will most probably follow Susanne's who is good at replying to any comment she has on her posts. Or make my "receipt answer" on your blog when I visit. But to return the courtesy right now, I have gone through some of your recent comments and here are my comments to yours. Jason wrote on “Jazz on the 5th, Nr.5": I Lo

Ninety years ago today, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Thelonius Monk was born. It took him longer than Charlie Parker or Dizzy Gillespie to make it big, but "Straight, No Chaser", "Round About Midnight", and "Blue Monk", along with his albums of interpretations of Duke Ellington, will live forever. John Coltrane once said: "I always had to be alert with Monk, because if you didn't keep aware all the time of what was going on you'd suddenly feel as if you'd stepped into an empty elevator sha

Our friends at Culture Monster turned us on to this cool event... If Thelonious Monk had stuck around for a metaphorical third set, he'd be 91 this month. Monk walked onto the scene at 19, settling behind the piano with the house band at Harlem's Minton's Playhouse in the early '40s and started fiddling with jazz's molecular structure, altering it forever. Monk's compositions (and his approach to them) --angular, intricate and shot through with humor --were marked by twists of whimsy and
…it was, of course, on the 9th (my third birthday, BTW) that the landmark Ed Sullivan debut was made, as well as the taping of the third Sullivan appearance, which ran after the group had already returned to London. In between the taping and the live broadcast, the Fabs gave a few more words to Murray the K, as well as the “White Christmas” CBS interview. In the aftermath of that live broadcast, the dressing room at CBS Studio 50 was just as busy as the stage had been; at one point, Carroll Jam

There is nothing that does not require his attention." --Flannery O'ConnerI killed a bird last Thursday. I didn't mean to. It was a grackle, a bird that looks like a cross between a raven and a dove. When it sings it makes a harsh, unmusical readle-eak sound. They're scavengers for the most part. Iridescent black crea
Since June, a large handful of cultural professionals have been locked in a series of paint-splattered rooms around town with Dizzy Gillespie blasting from tinny speakers mounted on the walls. Directors of area museums and other cultural influencers have been marched into the room, one by one, to be grilled about the state of the arts in the Richmond region. Each has been required to create a Change for a Ten submission and perform an original piece of choreography. Sort of. The quiet surroundi

I am not the taco. This is always a good thing to know, of course, and it would have taken a great load off my mind had this been the sort of thing I spend a lot of time worrying about, but since it isn’t, it really didn’t make much of a difference one way or the other to me. Still, it’s always nice to know. I have to admit that I hadn’t realized that my being or not being the taco was in any way an issue until I went to lunch the other day. There’s nothing like processed meat to bring up t
Assorted jazz that moves your soul. That's the Way Out East way. Bill Moring is someone readers of this space have come to know as the guy jazz pianist extraordinaire Steve Allee relies upon for holding down the bottom in his band. Moring is hardly "just" Allee's bass player, though. Throughout a three-decade career, Moring has played in ensembles of all sizes for big names like Dizzy Gillespie,...
I meant to feature the Soprano Summit album as my first pick hit, but couldn't find a cover shot in my usual place, and didn't have time to scrounge one up, let alone scan my copy. Release date is Sept. 9, so the capitalists are running a bit slow, not to mention scared. So my fallback was to avoid having to choose the better of the two best entries in the Monterey Jazz Festival series -- actually, two batches thus far. A secret admirer sends this one this morning. Yup, just the best... Dizzy Gillespie and Louis Armstrong. Interesting that during the trading of solos the camera shot is of the one who is not playing. Gives you a chance to see the thought process a little bit. The mutual appreciation is so apparent here - two trumpeters with completely different styles, one clearly indebted to the other, one clearly inspired by the other. Beautiful clip.
Washington’s Duke Ellington Jazz Festival kicks off each year with a private gala and concert for the sponsors and friends of the festival. Last night’s, held at the Inter-American Development Bank, was one act, scaled back from last year’s triple-bill spectacular. But its size was more than made up for by the quality of its performers: clarinetist Paquito d’Rivera (the festival’s musical director) and the Turtle Island String Quartet. Though they’ve got the standard classical lineup–two vio

This afternoon's outing, a trip to Jazz Showcase with E to hear Benny Golson play, is simultaneously the activity I have most been looking forward to, and been most nervous about. E loves live music, and he does well when we find opportunities to listen to great music outdoors. But will he enjoy a real indoor concert that wasn't designed for kids? I want to find out, because with so many wonderful museums and other kids activities, I'm finding it hard to "connect" with "the real" Chicago. A J
