Happy Birthday to guitarist, vocalist Mark Farner, born on September 29, 1948 in Flint, Michigan. I remember Grand Funk Railroad as a huge band during my senior year. “I’m Your Captain (Closer To Home),” “We’re an American Band,” and “Mean Mistreater” were my favorite songs from that era.
1971 was a great year [...]

There’s a great in-depth article in this week’s New Yorker. It’s a profile of Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery entitled A Better Brew: The rise of extreme beer by Burkhard Bilger, who’s also the author of Noodling for Flatheads. A few months ago I spoke to Bilger at length about the craft beer world in general and extreme beer more specifically. At that point, I don’t think he knew exactly what the focus of the piece would be and I gave him a few brewer’s names — including Sam — to
Mike Moreau of HOOPSWORLD: “Now as we compare both in the current day, with LeBron in Year 6 and Kobe in Year 13, Kobe is still the better individual defender and a consistently better foul shooter. James is the better rebounder, passer and a more dominant physical presence. He has also consistently been a better teammate and better leader. Last shot to win the game? Right now, it’s The Black Mamba. No one strikes more fear at crunch time, which may be the best comparison of all when trying to
Jump to Comments When do you think the expression “India Pale Ale” was first used? Much, much later than you’d imagine, and much, much later than the idea of a pale ale exported to the Far East. The term India Pale Ale does not appear in print until June 1837, more than half a century, at least, after pale ale brewed in Britain started being sold in India. So what was it known as, then? Before 1837 the beer we now call India Pale Ale, or IPA, was labelled simply “pale ale” when it was being sold
Times are tough for everyone at the moment. As a result, my mother has instituted a one-gift per person rule at Christmas this year for everyone in the family (both Brewer and Hay) with a price limit. So please don’t think me presumptuous for writing a post about charity heading into the season of giving when times are more difficult than usual. That said, I’ve written about eBay Giving Works, WorldofGood.com, and MicroPlace in the past here on Ink and I just wanted to make folks aware of a n

Maybe if we could petition the NBA to let the Jazz play all their games at home… nah. David Stern hates the Jazz enough to tell his refs to not call fouls when ‘Sap is hammered every play

House Originally uploaded by dieselboi There is a block close to my house where 9 single family homes are boarded up awaiting demolition. On N. Interstate, a new condo tower is going in - albeit only a 6 story “tower.” While I’m glad to see the change, I am saddened by the loss of some great 1920’s or earlier bungalows and Victorians. Well, it appears at least one of the houses is going to be saved. I wandered by the other evening and this house is up on steel I-beams awaiting transport
Beer drinkers might actually have something to celebrate about. Scientists at Rice University have created a beer that could extend your life. They have named the beverage BioBeer, and the way it works is that it has three genes spliced into a specific brewer’s yeast that produces resveratrol, which is a chemical in red wine thought to protect against diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer's and other age-related conditions. But don’t expect to toast to this special beer just yet. The team still needs to re
In comments below, Green Dragon owner Ed Schwartz gives a thorough debrief of the final days of the pre-Rogue era.Yes it is true that I will no longer be the owner of the Green Dragon. While I am bummed out it didn’t work out with me as owner –I am grateful to Rogue for stepping in and doing the things that we could not. The city is requiring the building to be sprinkled, doors to be inset, walls to be built separating the brewery. They have additionally tacked on over 51k in CBC fees. Completin

The Yankees have quite a bit of holes to fill this offseason. Simply put their hitting last year was abysmal (partially due to injuries, but also some guys aging) and their starting pitching had so many injuries that they relied much too much on Sidney Ponson. Their fielding has sunk to a really poor level as well. And to top it off, they don’t have a real centerfielder now that Johnny Damon only has the health and range for left field. So, what should the Yankees do this offseason? Starting Pi
