I didn't mean to go. Not to the concert. As much as I loved Iron and Wine, Baltimore on a Tuesday night seemed a bit of a stretch, especially after a hard weekend, a late Monday return and too little sleep before too much work. But things changed and we went. I meant to meet up with a friend for dinner a week earlier, to celebrate a decided lack of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS, Maladie de Charcot, Lou Gehrig's Disease) in her life. It wasn't a theoretical celebration but the so-very-posit
Beverly Fisher, caught up in the music Playing and singing can be enjoyed for less than a song at Grace Lutheran’s “Music at Grace” concert series. Beverly Fisher and I were once dubbed “local enthusiasts” by the editor of Clarksville Online and it continues to be apt, thanks to the diversity of arts to celebrate in this community. Our enthusiasm was thoroughly ignited again at the latest concert in the free series so generously provided by Grace Lutheran Church and those of us who wish to do
The last time Guns N’ Roses released an album’s worth of original material, River Phoenix was still acting, Kurt Cobain wasn’t a household name yet, and Jurassic Park was just a novel. Things have changed, to say the least, and while nearly eighteen years have passed since Use Your Illusion I & II, the fan base for the former ’80s outfit is still as strong as ever. Twenty and thirty somethings still wear their faded “GNR” shirts, while teenagers flock to Hot Topic and buy belt buckles, pins
Bison BC - Call The Office London November 12th 2008 Bison BC (opening for Priestess) with support by Barn Burner and Flash Lightning - Call The Office London November 12th 2008 Review and pictures by Mike Bax www.myspace.com/bisoneastvan As I was purchasing a tour shirt at the back of the venue and finishing up my evening after seeing Bison BC, three bouncers thumped past me as they hauled a screaming young lad out the door. They tossed him out on his ear, whereupon he rolled into a yell
James Gnarwell from Bison B.C. live at Call The Office - London An Interview with James Gnarwell from Bison B.C. Photos and interview by Mike Bax Thanks to Metal Blade for press access www.myspace.com/bisoneastvan After some van troubles, a late arrival at Call The Office had me sitting in Call The Office for 30 minutes before Bison even rolled through the door. My scheduled 4:30 interview was well over three hours past. The fellow I was to hook up with to set up the interview wasn’t in
Fleeing the Congo for Phoenix November 19, 2008 · Leave a Comment PHOENIX — Videlinata Istina Krishna grew up in a world most of us could never imagine, and she uses her life experiences to help those who have walked down similar paths. The album features current and former members of Guided By Voices, Luna, Joan As Police Woman, Dead Air and The Damnbuilders. The Roots have been hired to be Jimmy Fallon's new talk show house band. That is very bittersweet for me because I'm a fan of The Roots, and now they've just become a house band? I suppose it's a steady gig, and they'll still get to perform together for 15 seconds at a time as they play to bring on guests, but I feel like they've completely sold out. To me, The Roots have always had the "real factor" going for them, and they've just mainstreamed themselves. My friends and I had a debate a
Truth be told, we were initially going to do an Illustrated Guide on the Smiths, given this new compilation is out, but... well, it's a well worn path, isn't it? So many books, papers, articles, thinkpieces, conference minutes and scrawled notes have been penned on the whole story from New York Dolls letters to Severed Alliance and beyond that by now you can probably come up with a decent explanation yourselves that references working class mores, prosthlytising, English poetry, gender roles, ki

Just like the Ford Fusion, the Fusion's sister the Mercury Milan also gets a long list of changes for the 2010 model year. This includes new styling inside and out, upgraded engines and a new hybrid model. The Milan makes due with only two gasoline engines, the 2.5L and 3.0L, unfortunately the 263hp 3.5L V6 is only available in the Fusion Sport. The Milan Hybrid is identical to the Fusion Hybrid and will be able to go up to 47 mph on electricity alone. Ford also predicts that the Fusion and
Sharing the project I made last night. I've had this one my mind for some time now. I've been seeing all the paper trees made with looped paper strips or looped ribbon, and it got me thinking about using my AccuCut Fringe Die, to create a paper Christmas tree. It's about 18 inches tall. It's kind of hard to see the actual color of the papers I used because they are kind of iridescent. They are light green with gold and cream with gold. I added some glitter tot he tips of the fringe after t

Taylor Swift annihilated the competition this week to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and Top Country Albums charts for her sophomore album Fearless, with sales of 592,000 albums. Even if her digital sales were the only numbers counted, she’d still have enough to drop in the No. 4 spot at 129,000 copies sold. Charlie Robison plans to release a new album, Beautiful Day, in early 2009. It’ll be a divorce album of sorts, giving the listener a glimpse into his state of mind during his split fro
Street with a view: “May 3rd 2008, artists Robin Hewlett and Ben Kinsley invited the Google Inc. Street View team and residents of Pittsburgh’s Northside to collaborate on a series of tableaux along Sampsonia Way. Neighbors, and other participants from around the city, staged scenes ranging from a parade and a marathon, to a garage band practice, a seventeenth century sword fight, a heroic rescue and much more.” (via.)
Guns n’ Roses - Chinese Democracy (Geffen, 2008) purchase this album (Best Buy) Unless you’ve spent a lot of time in the company of William Shatner, Chinese Democracy will likely be one of the most ridiculous audio recordings you ever come across. It is sprawling and stupid and ludicrous and hilarious and will make you shoot milk out of your nose and cringe and it is not very good and sometimes extremely terrible, and just when you think things cannot possibly get any more extraordinarily str
Negotiations between the Clintons and President-elect Obama’s transition team are rapidly moving toward a formal offer of secretary of State for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.), with both sides expecting a formal announcement in the next seven days, according to numerous officials who are involved. As a key part of satisfying Obama’s vetting team, former President Bill Clinton is open to giving up foreign sources of income if she becomes secretary of State, according to a close friend. T

My second morning in New York was bright and breazy, as the old song about sailors and nice girls goes. I explored the foot of Manhattan before climbing up the leg like a spider, but a spider with a sketchbook and a little stool. Had to stop off in Wall Street see what all the fuss is about. The financial district with its narrow streets felt to me just like London, it was uncanny. Oh, except for the big American flag draped over the new york stock exchange like a band-aid (is that really nece
