It was just, you know, Thanksgiving weekend, so Mr. and Mrs. Glib Senior were in town from the city that rocks, the birthplace of rock and roll, the mistake by the lake, Cleveland, OH. In honor of their arrival, I made a “Safe for the Parents” mix on my iPod, complete with classic rock, adult-friendly alternative, and decidedly lacking in power punk. The tunes got me thinking about one of the bands I was raised on - Fleetwood Mac. Luckily, my propensity for singing “Second Hand News” as a thre
Common, Universal Mind Control (Geffen, 2008) Common was too busy acting in films to record another one of those boring-ass albums with Kanye West, who's batshit crazy now anyway, so he went and did a buncha club records with the Neptunes. Neither of the singles from this caught fire, and it ended up being pushed back from this summer to this December. Just how bad is it? Let's have a look. "Conversations With Chávez and Castro"--Sean Penn, (The Nation)with video (03:44):Soon to be Vice President-elect Joe Biden was rallying the troops: "We can no longer be energy dependent on Saudi Arabia or a Venezuelan dictator." Well, I know what Saudi Arabia is. But having been to Venezuela in 2006, touring slums, mixing with the wealthy opposition and spending days and hours at its president's side, I wondered, without wondering, to whom Senator Biden was referring. Hugo Chávez Frías is the d

Posted by WorldbyStorm in Culture. trackback The Fireman, you say? Who he? Well, he is they, Youth, formerly and more recently of Killing Joke (who I’ve dealt with here before) and one Paul McCartney. Yeah, that Paul McCartney, the one in that band from Liverpool. Their sound? The first two albums were ambient with a hint of dance. Which was odd being the product of McCartney. The more recent one, Electric Arguments? ________________________________________________ A brief progress report on my last-minute preparations for the Christmas Dinner - which is tomorrow! - with no proper recipes yet because I don't have time to type them out. Why? Tim and I are on our way to a seventies party. He's dressing up as David Bowie, and after much pondering I'm going to be glam-rocking it up myself. I say pondering because it was surprisingly difficult to figure out what to dress up as (after Tim beat me to being Bowie t
Kind of looks like a Green Sun rising over Masonic ManhattanAs we sit and wait for the Malthusian remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still (with Keanu Reeves as Klaatu and one-time Secret Sun siren Jennifer Connelly as Helen), I was reminded of a very strange episode in pop history, when the squarest musical combo to walk the face of the planet spent a king's ransom recording a telepathic invocation to authoritarian space messiahs. A tune which itself had originally been written by a mysterious
