Dan Fogelberg, singer-songwriter-folk-rock-performer, passed away Sunday at age 56.
Fogelberg was another victim of prostate cancer, following Frank Zappa who also died prematurely from the same disease in 1993.
There’s an outpouring of emotion across the web and across the country for this gentle voice and beautiful soul, including pal Jackson Browne.
Some very moving words and advice [...]
By the time this interview was recorded in 1978, Duke had recorded and toured with Jean-Luc Ponty, Frank Zappa, Cannonball Adderly, Stanley Clarke, and Billy Cobham — covering jazz, rock, and everything on the spectrum in between before heading in a more straightforward funk direction with 1977’s Reach For It and its 1978 follow-up Don’t Let Go. Duke openly admits in this interview of trying to avoid being pigeonholed in any specific genre, and has a lot to say about the state of music in the l
Patches En Regalia Friday, October 10th, 2008 Categories: Future Knitting Plans, Patches En Regalia I’m making a hat. I’m naming it after Frank Zappa’s Peaches En Regalia because there are lots of different patches of pattern in it and because the improvisational wackiness is very jazzy, much like the song. Also, I just wanted to refer to Peaches En Regalia because it is possibly the greatest song ever written. Aside from this one, of course. You go ahead and watch those, I’ll wait. On t
Answers to Suanie is so Great songs October 10th, 2008 As per yesterday, remember some of the lyrics were changed … apologies for any lyrics I got wrong or spelling mistakes of artists names! Suanie is so great because: She rocks the boat, don’t rock the boat baby. Rock the Boat by Hues Corporation I heard her whip the women just around midnight Brown Sugar by Rolling Stones She don’t need no education Another Brink in the Wall Part II – Pink Floyd She took a black cat, thin
THE WEEKEND STARTS HERE:...with THE FAB FAUX! Not every Beatles tribute band boasts musicians like Will Lee from The Late Show with David Letterman and Jimmy Vivino from Late Night with Conan O'Brien. So when they play, it's not surprising to find cameos from Conan O'Brien on "My Bonnie" and "Too Much Monkey Business," Mighty Max Weinberg on "A Hard Day's Night" and "You Can't Do That," former Beatlemaniac Marshall Crenshaw on "When I Get Home," and Elvis Costello on "Yes It Is" and "Hey Bull

Have you ever eaten an apple and found a worm inside? Have you ever stopped to smell a beautiful flower, only to get stung by a bee? Have you ever found yourself in a state of physical bliss and spiritual harmony as your soul ascends to heaven on a cloud of love and peace, and then god punches you in the face, you fall down to Earth, land in a pile of shit, and are brutally gang-raped by a pack of rabid huskies and their Inuit masters? That’s Yoko. Here we have John Lennon and Frank Zappa perfor
{with apologies to Arsenio Hall and C&C Sound Factory} I know we all see certain amounts of stupidity and non-congruent behavior every day. I certainly see more than my share as I go through my days. I have been collecting this little hit list for a while and thought I’d share. Feel free to add your observances in the comments. • When looking for something on IMdB, do you think that, since these people are famous, someone is not trying hard enough when the entry says “No picture availabl

Songs about madness seemed to be a big deal in the late-1960s, and most of my playlist originates from that era. The rise of psychedelic drugs - and the resulting psychoanalytic push - acted as a muse for many songwriters to document the ordeals of mental instability. Since I wrote the intro to this month’s selection, I’ll let the songs do the rest of the talking - have fun! “Helter Skelter” - The Beatles (from The Beatles [a.k.a. The White Album]) This song ostensibly is Paul McCartney’s an
WTF is he talking about? Is the govt. gonna buy everyone’s McMansions? I think NOT. # If he says “no, you can be MY wingman!” we get to finish the whole damn bottle, right? RIGHT? # Warren Buffett working for the govt? Is he slumming now? # “Wall Street,” and “Main Street.” I don’t live on either of those. I live on Wisteria Lane. # Oh, shit, he said “credit markets are frozen.” According to my chart, that means I have to clean a toilet. Fuck. # @FabGirl Gloves will help, but I really need a ba
Our pal Kevin Hoover once again hits the airwaves on Friday with his Zappa infused radio show “Zappa’s Grubby Chamber”: Apart from the Frank musicks, I have a few other special moments planned, and they mainly consist of non-Frank items that I know in my heart will appeal to Zappa fans. This is Radio Without The Rules, y’know. Besides, what’re they gonna do, fire me? Talking points (hah!) will be Russ Stedman, Ween’s newest release, La Cucaracha, as well as an “extracurricular” interview with
Music discovery is clearly a hot topic these days, with large companies like Apple and Microsoft competing with smaller services like imeem, Pandora, and Last.fm. With the exception of Pandora, these services typically rely on the listening habits and recommendations of other users. Mufin.com, however, which launched today, uses a fully automated system that only takes the actual sounds of a song into consideration. In our tests, Mufin often returned good results, but the fact that it doesn't
try buy Trappers Cabin, the musical project of Georgia’s Joel Nettesheim, makes some of the most interestingly odd and unclassifiable music around. On Trappers Cabin’s latest record, Trappers Mind, Nettesheim blends art-rock, freak-folk, psychedelia and space-rock, and throws in plenty of surprises. From song to song, the sound twists and turns, and the result is an eclectic mix of music tied together by its collective goofiness. The record opens with an eerie, spoken-word intro, set to a s
Once again, Neil Young has announced a delay in the release of his Chinese Democracy-esque Archives project. This marks the third delay for 8-CD/2-DVD package. Bad News Beat tells us the delay stems from production issues not economic or blue-ray problems. Now, Neil Young Archives Vol. 1 is due in January or February, but we’ll believe it when we see it. Here are some links you can both see and believe… The Replacements move closer and closer to reuniting Did the promoters of Glastonbury de

James Flora ~ Antheneum, 1978 One from the Flora "Grandpa" series, this book totally freaks me out. I would have been horrified by it as a child, but then my husband (who loved Rat Fink and Frank Zappa when he was little) steps in and declares it awesome. Says, if fact, that he would have worshipped this book as a child. So, I open its pages again and again, knowing that I am giving the boy what he will eventually need to fuel his nightmares, thus making him a more creative and spirited man jus

Shogu Tokumaru, seen here not at Pop Montreal. (Photo by Elchicodelaleche.) My Pop Montreal retrospective semi-essay appeared (in miniature deep in the Review section) in der Globe today. It got chopped and screwed somewhat in der editing, tho, so I'm a-gonna put the raw version up for you on the jump, gussied up with linkage. Hoped to share a few other notes today but had to finish up some hack assignment for some Spanish hipsters (honestly) + haven't had a chance. Stay tuned for the big l
Mrowster drunk on Zappa. On Saturday 4 October 2008, the founders of two world-class blogs - Pig State Recon and Impy Malting- met up to exchange thoughts, question assumptions, and simply bask in the formidable glow of Frank Zappa, his well-respected We’re Only In It For the Money LP from 1968, and a limited-edition, Belgian style triple ale (8.2% ABV) brewed by the Laginuta Brewing Co. to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the album’s release. And bask we did - after dropping the needle on the
