Rhino Records has been my favorite record label for years. Those same zany folks offer their fantastic catalog and bizarre sense of humor online, and serve up all their latest music and video in CD, DVD, digital downloads, and of course, their awesome box sets.
Now they’re sharing their best video clips on YouTube on [...]

Freedy Johnston - Bad Reputaion
Inspired by EV Grieve's penchant for posting videos that display New York's vanished glory, herewith Freedy Johnston's 1994 heartstring-tugger, "Bad Reputation." This clip, which seems to strive for the same abstract, "Waiting for Godot"-vibe that helped make k.d. Lang's "Constant Craving" a hit, was at least half-shot on the streets of Soho (I think I recognize Crosby and Mercer in there) and below the Williamsburg bridge. The other half seems to have been shot somewhere in dystopian Long Isla

Adam Marsland- My Kickass Life (MP3) Adam Marsland- Ginna Ling (MP3) You probably haven't heard of Adam Marsland. The journeyman rock'n'roller has been a victim of the usual suspects- record label meltdowns, bad timing and the like. Aficionados of the intelligent power pop of Freedy Johnston, Paul Westerberg and early Who, however, are missing out on a musician who's potentially one of their favorite artists. A new budget priced compilation, Daylight Kissing Night: Adam Marsla

[photo credit] Freedy Johnston performed his classic album Can You Fly on Friday night at Maxwell’s and brought along a cast of all-star friends in support. The original co-producer of the album, legendary bassist Graham Maby played on about half the songs, and the uber-guitarist Dave Schramm played pedal steel on a handful of numbers. Longtime Freedy collaborator Kevin Salem provided the primary lead guitar work, and the rhythmic backbone was drummer Linda Pitmon (also of the Miracle 3), an

As promised, in anticipation of Freedy Johnston’s performance tomorrow night of his 1992 album Can You Fly, we offer a recording from the nyctaper archives. This performance by Freedy seems like ages ago, and yet it was only 11 years ago last month. The 1997 Guinness Fleadh on Randall’s Island was a two-day Festival with a roster of artists that was so impressive that even in the blistering heat and dust, the island was still sold out. Freedy Johnston was the headline act in the smallest tent

The former frontman for the Dream Syndicate will perform the complete The Days of Wine and Roses with his band Steve Wynn & the Miracle 3 at Maxwell’s. Steve has graciously permitted nyctaper to capture this historic concert in its best possible light and even invited us to the soundcheck. Today we learned that we will be permitted to also record Freedy Johnston’s set. Freedy will be performing h

Freedy Johnston:
I’ve been spending some time revisiting the soundtracks of my younger years, and one album that’s grabbed me all over again is Freedy Johnston’s 1994 Elektra release, ‘This Perfect World’, and unlike a number of revisits, it’s aged beautifully. It’s an album filled with darkness, heartache, and some deeply troubled loners, and the stories being told are a peek into a whiskey soaked world where every bad decision hangs like an anchor around your neck. Think of it as a pop-ish singer/songwriter
