When I’m in the mood to dance, the B-52’s always come to mind. Especially their dance floor classic “Love Shack.” The remix versions are always big fun at parties or clubs.
The B-52’s are back on record after sixteen years with their first album of the 21st century. “Funplex” features eleven new songs [...]
Until I began writing this post, I had no idea that the subject — a stupid and rather mean-spirited song the likes of which you’d expect to hear while on hold or while standing in line at the grocery store — had been nominated for an Academy Award. That fact speaks ill either of the award itself or the state of American, British and Australian culture back in 1967. The song is “Georgy Girl,” by The Seekers. Surprised? Does it seems strange to you that this ditty — and it is a ditty, and little
The B-52s have lent their sound to NBC network’s ongoing Chime In campaign. The World’s Greatest Party Band has recorded its own version of NBC’s infamous chimes, which will air in promo form during the network’s primetime lineup. The promo will feature the band shaking and shimmying to the reworked tune in their own distinctive style. The B-52s are in good company - other super-stars involved in the campaign include B.B. King, Clint Black, Richie Sambora, The Airborne Toxic Event, The Flam
What follows is a speculative origin for the personified cure-all that is Jenny Lewis’s Fernando. I first heard this song more than two years ago, at a benefit for 826 Valencia that featured Lewis alongside such folks as Aimee Mann, The Mountain Goats, Sarah Vowell and John Krasinski. I liked the song and downloaded it straightaway, even if it was a lousy live recording of it taken from a performance on Late Night With Conan O’Brien. Lewis finally released a polished studio version of “See Fern
Dave Wrangler sent over this really fun mashup/remix party mix that includes some pretty clever mixes from both Hip Hop and Indie scene. The good news is that FIREPROOF will still be on more than 800 theaters this weekend—the ninth-straight time since the movie opened on September 26. The reality is, this will likely be the final weekend with this many theaters. There are just too many blockbusters on the release schedule for the coming weeks to keep this amazing run going. So ... if you are one of those people that have been meaning to see it, but haven’t yet, this is your time. Or, if you are one of the millions that have found

Friday, Nov. 7 PLAN A: The Spinners @ Viejas. My obsession with Magic 92.5-FM is overwhelming. The Spinners are going to bring the “quiet storm” to Viejas, and there’ll be plenty of baby-making following this show from the classic Detroit soul group. PLAN B: The B-52s @ House of Blues. Their latest album, Funplex, is proof that a glossy, shiny turd is a turd nonetheless, but I’d imagine shit still goes off when they rip into “Rock Lobster” and “Dance This Mess Around.” BACKUP PLAN: Charles Mu
I’m a bit late in posting a song of the week, so I’ll cheat and make this week’s song an instrumental. Ha!In honor of the fact that tonight’s installment of The Simpson’s annual Treehouse of Horror parodies the phenomenal opening to Mad Men, I’m writing about the Mad Men theme, RJD2’s “A Beautiful Mine.”First, here’s what The Simpsons did.Given that more than a few Mad Men plotlines have centered around Don Draper’s repeated infidelities, it’s nice to see would-be Simpsons homewrecker Lurleeen L
Unlike some people, I enjoy songs with parenthetical titles. Somehow, the combination of “This Thing (Plus Another Thing Over Here)” results in something more powerful and more attention-grabbing that some boring song title without parentheses. When I see a title like that, I imagine that the song was initially called one thing — usually the part of the song that lives outside the parentheses — and then somehow the song grew to take on a life of its own. Maybe, during the recording of the song,
As a sort of follow-up to the previous song of the week — the unpleasant, pedophiliac interpretation to Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m on Fire” — I’ve chosen to do another lyrical analysis for a song that, upon close inspection, is quite disturbing: Roy Orbison’s “I Drove All Night.” Recorded in 1987 and not released until 1992, “I Drove All Night” is often recognized as a Cyndi Lauper song. I had not actually ever heard her version until today, though I think she has the pipes to do a good job with

A slight variation for the song of the week: exploring one song in the form of its original version and two recent covers. “I’m on Fire” was first released as the fourth single from Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the U.S.A., but I’d not heard the song until I downloaded Electrelane’s 2006 cover. Being neither a Springsteen fan nor especially familiar with Electrelane’s sound, I had no idea their track was a cover, but then I heard the original while riding in my friend’s truck some months back. A q

The polls are now closed on the 9/26/08 edition of Virginia Virtucon’s Reagan Rock Video Fights. In a shutout, the B-52’s have blown away the reigning champ Journey! Make room for the Funplex! Be sure to be here this Friday for our next RRVF when Journey defends their title against a new challenger. Until next time, this is your Virginia Virtucon VJ, Jim Riley, signing off… Filed under: Reagan Rock Video Fights
Reagan Rock Video Fights is here once again!!! Last week, Journey became the first band ever to put an end to the reign of a Huey Lewis and the News video. Was it just a fluke or does Journey have staying power? Stay tuned!!! In this corner, the champions. They may have gone “separate ways” with their most famous lead singer, but their sound is hardly “worlds apart.” Here is Journey with “Never Walk Away” from their latest album “Revelation” that cracked the charts of the top 5 albums earlier th
Greetings from the homestead. Things have been kind of weird here recently. The other night, I got a knock on my door, and the man at the door randomly asked me if I was selling my house. With his family sitting in the van across the street. It was a little bit unsettling the more that I thought about it. Tonight, I came home and got a “welcome to the neighborhood” pack in my mailbox from the city, despite the fact that I moved in here nearly a year ago. Better late than never? Anyway, let’s
Even after releasing a brand new studio album and spending a good part of the spring and summer months on the road, The B-52s are still looking to make up for lost time. In addition to the previously announced Day of the Dead concert in New York with Special Disco Version and Hercules & Love Affair, the Georgia outfit will spend most of November touring the west coast in support of Funplex, the B-52s’ first new album in nearly 16 years. The band also recently released a remix EP entitled J
