Dallas International Guitar Show

April 22nd, 2008
By Mike

The 31st Annual Dallas International Guitar Festival and MusicFest was awesome, as usual. We saw some new things this year, like Trillium’s new tube guitar amps. The design and cabinetry caught my eye, and their great tone caught my ears, so I stopped to chat. Scott told me this is Trillium’s [...]

April 17th, 2008

$59,750.00 was the winning bid for this very famous set of autographs from all four of The Beatles, during their visit with Elvis on August 27th, 1965.
The auction was held on April 5th at Heritage Auction Galleries in Dallas. I was talking to my friend at FansOnTheRun about what a big deal it is [...]

Originally broadcast last June, the interview also features Olivia Harrison, Yoko Ono Lennon, and Guy Laliberte, the founder of Cirque du Soleil. Neil Aspinall 1941 - 2008

March 25th, 2008
By Mike

Neil Aspinall has passed away in New York at age 66. He was receiving treatment for lung cancer. He was such a huge part of The Beatles success, it’s hard to overestimate how much he will be missed. Not only was he heavily involved in their business, but he was [...]

February 26th, 2008
By Mike

George Harrison (February 25, 1943 - November 29, 2001) would be celebrating another birthday with us if cancer hadn’t claimed him in 2001. Let’s honor his spirit with a hearty “Hare Krishna” and celebrate his amazing life of music.

George Harrison Tribute

November 30th, 2007
By Mike

Born in 1942, the former Beatle passed away on this date (November 29th) in 2001. My friend Nellie O’Apple at FansOnTheRun posted a cool YouTube video that’s the perfect tribute to George Harrison, the man and his music.
“While My Guitar Gently Weeps” is from the Concert For George, at London’s Royal Albert Hall in 2002, [...]

Labor Community Rallies On October 6 For Beaten and Arrested ILWU Local 10 Members in Yolo County House Courthouse A hundred ILWU Local 10 longshoremen, officers and other labor and community supporters were in Woodland at the Yolo County Courthouse on October 6, 2008 to protest the trial of Jason Ruffin and Aaron Harrison, two members who had been beaten and arrested on the docks of Sacramento. In August of 2007, after returning from lunch they were pulled out of their car by Yolo County poli

One Reason Why This Is Still a Great Country (South Park 12th Season Semi-Premiere Edition)

Sure, things may be going down the crapper in any number of ways: The stock market is tanking faster than the Cubs in post-season play; George W. Bush is still president at least until January; McCain and Obama are very special bums each in their own way; and much, much more. But as long as there's South Park, there's hope. Or at least incredibly bizarre laughs. Earlier this week, SP returned with new episodes as part of its 12th season. The opener this time included a truly mad plotline in whi

VOLCANO SCRIBES: MORE LIVE THAN YOU’LL EVER BE >>> Air Supply YouTube member Wakakashi says it all, commenting on Air Supply’s seminal ballad “All out of Love.” “I did not know that the chorus is sung by a man. Somehow awkward …” he writes. “Awesome song though.” For those of you fortunate enough to have forgotten the 1980s, the Emerald Queen Casino continues to resurrect blissfully-forgotten pop zombies, sending them to assault musical evolution like hell-bent cultural creationists.

SOUTH PARK shows what Spielberg & Lucas really did to Indiana Jones

SOUTH PARK shows what Spielberg & Lucas really did to Indiana Jones October 10th, 2008 by Scott Marks South Park does nothing for me, but I do admire any attempt to publicly embarrass and degrade Steve Spielberg and the addition of Geeorge Lucas and Harrison Ford makes it even yummier. This schooyard satire depicts Steve and George Lucas literally doing to Harrision Ford what they “artistically” did to the Indiana Jones franchise. Paul McCartney Upset McDonald’s Used His Picture to Attract Customers

Paul McCartney, who has been a vegetarian for 30 years, was extremely upset after he learned staff at a McDonald’s put up his pictures to attract customers. Paul’s portrait appears alongside bandmate John Lennon and fellow vegans Ringo Starr and the late George Harrison at a Liverpool branch. Sir Paul’s spokesman Geoff Baker said: “What sort of morons do McDonald’s think Beatles fans are?" “It’s ridiculous and insulting to use images to peddle hamburgers. Fans should boycott McDonalds, an

NFL Picks: Week 6

I couldn’t buy a bucket last week. My record was deplorable. I haven’t been able to look in the mirror in six days. Who cares if I was only one Third and 17 miracle, one bogus roughing the passer call, one meaningless Ike Hilliard touchdown and one Sage Rosenfels away from .500? I have no excuses (except for those), and will keep on truckin’ like Nate Newton. Guaranteed winning week, or my name isn’t Anthony Smith. Big Love

I can't say that I much cared for the Coen brothers' Burn After Reading. I really do love the comedy of paranoia, and I like the idea of a black comedy in which a string of coincidences, misinterpretations, and delusions lead to a string of authentic killings and assorted mayhem, but in the actuality, the movie's comic monsters were so petty and lacking in stature (except maybe for Tilda Swinton's shiver-inducing gorgon of an inexplicably haughty pediatrician) that it was hard to laugh at the

Indiana Jones: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Even Though It’s Indy, This One’s an Iffy Feature Time: 122 min. Studio: Paramount Rating: PG-13 Format: Blu-Ray SRP: $39.99 FEATURE If Hollywood has taught us one thing it’s that “The End” is never really the end. Indiana Jones was last seen riding off into the sunset at the end of The Last Crusade. If one person, or in this case, three want to make a sequel bad enough, it will happen. Really, who’s going to stop Steven Speilberg, George Lucas, and Harrison Ford from making a fourth

Barbara Orbison EXCLUSIVE interview

Roy and Barbara Orbison With his voice, his look and being known as one of the nicest guys in showbiz, many music fans and fellow musicians alike will agree that Roy Orbison was one of a kind. From the beginning of his career in Texas, playing the same venues as Buddy Holly, his time at Sun Records in Memphis alongside Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins, causing riots at shows, his lifelong friendship with Johnny Cash, touring with the Beatles - you would think that alone would be enoug

7 Unexpected Moments of Guitar Awesomeness

The interweb tubes are stuffed with lists heralding the high fallutin’ achievements of all those “greatest of all time” type guitar players that the mainstream media throw in your face everyday. Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen, Kirk Hammett, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Tom Morrello, Slash…they’ve all done some pretty impressive stuff. But you know what? They aren’t the only people that play the damn guitar. In fact, there are several artists who, on any given night, can burn any given venue to the

I missed John Lennon's birthday, which was yesterday, October 9th (1940). He always told everyone (accurately) that he was born during the London Blitz. I love this song, written mostly by John, but sung by George Harrison--assigned to give him confidence, so the story goes. (John sounded just like a boss!) This clip is from the film A HARD DAY'S NIGHT (1964). The song was written specifically for the movie AND for George. They all look beautiful! Beatles - I'm Happy Just to Dance with You

Why We Love the Beatles 4 of 100

Because George was in the team. George Harrison, that is. George was the quiet one, the one who initially was possibly held back by the splendour of the Lennon-McCartney singer-songwriter team (who wouldn't have been?). Although maybe if he hadn't have had that daily drip-feed, maybe - just maybe - those chords and lyrics would have been lost to the world. But over time and as his confidence developed he burst forth with gorgeous songs, especially when he went solo. George was the spiritual one

Review: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (Blu-Ray)

The Indiana Jones franchise is one of the most loved in cinema history. For over twenty years Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Harrison Ford have brought us to places we as viewers could only imagine. Well now the Trio of Spielberg, Lucas, and Ford have brought back the screen icon for another adventure, but is it worthy of the Indiana Jones crown, or is it just one step up from some of the second rate adventure series to come out lately (The Mummy, or National Treasure). The title releases

Lucas and Spielberg Defile Indy Jones on 'South Park'

Hindsight is 20/20, of course, but a lot of us saw this happening going in. I didn't love Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I didn't hate it, either, although there are parts of that movie that stink even by George Lucas' steadily sinking standards. I thought it was OK, entertaining if you're a fan. Harrison Ford probably should hang up the fedora and Steven Spielberg needs to make more interesting movies. The bottom line is that we didn't really need a fourth adventure.
