Why are accents so important in shaping the performance of an actor? Does it really matter if he strays once in while? It does and we have vehemently protested in the past. Example? How many of us cringed at Anne Hathaway's terrible English accent in Becoming Jane, so much so that it clouded an other wise good performance from a talented actress. And what about the masterful Italian American accent pulled off by James Caan who wasn't even Italian American. Wasn't that a huge contributor to the
Eye rollers, people who condescendingly roll their eyes when confronted with truth, share common characteristics: apathy, naivety, and of course blissful ignorance. In addition, some eye rollers can be very dispassionate, as exemplified in the following separate scenarios: While attempting to explain the illegalities of unwarranted surveillance, a friend replied – “As long as I am not doing anything wrong, I don’t care if they listen to my conversations.” While describing the potential tyranni

Below are listed 31 pairs of players. Your job is simply to decide if Player A was more valuable by at least ten runs, Player B was more valuable by at least ten runs, or if the two players were equal in production (within five runs). On your answer sheet, simply put an A, B, or E. For the record, I'm using Justin's TotalValue ratings, which incorporate park-adjusted linear weights, league-adjusted replacement level, positional adjustments, and combined STATS and BIS zone ratings converted t
Review: Valentine 1x1 Posted yesterday at 15:33 | 2 comments | In the US: Sundays, 8/7c, The CW Valentine is one of those high concept shows that could, depending on how they're implemented, turn out to be fundamentally excellent or fundamentally awful. "The Greek gods are alive and well and living among us". Brilliant, hey? I'd buy that book/watch that TV show, because it's a great idea. But, and here's the problem, if the gods just sit in front of the TV all day, it's going to be very
Beatles, Cash Documentaries Highlight Woodstock Film FestThough hours from the site of the historic music festival, Woodstock, NY has long been considered synonymous with music. To that end, it's fitting that the Woodstock Film Festival would honor its location's reputation. The 9th annual fest, which took place Oct. 1-5, included several music documentaries in its 'Focus on Music' series. Spinner took in all of the flicks and pared it down to the top three music lovers must see. 1. 'All Togeth
Review: The Ex List 1x1 Posted yesterday at 12:20 | Post a comment | In the US: Fridays, 9pm et/pt, CBS What do women want? It's a despairing thought asked by male TV executives all the time, in the hope of getting some female viewers for their networks. Sometimes they'll look at the chick lit section of their local Barnes and Noble and go, "Oh. That's what women want." Other times, they'll look at other female oriented TV programmes and copycommission appropriately. Sometimes, though, t
Review: Numb3rs 5x1 Posted yesterday at 09:57 | Post a comment | In the US: Fridays, 10pm ET/PT, CBS In the UK: Five, Five US, ITV1 and ITV3 in some sort of rota system, some time next year Think CBS and if you know your US networks, you'll probably think 'procedural' immediately afterwards. If it's not existing stalwarts like the entire CSI stable, NCIS and The Unit filling the airwaves, we've The Eleventh Hour and The Mentalist this season as well. Then there's Numb3rs, which seems to
... you know the rest. But seriously, what the fuck is going on with this country? Why the fuck are we arresting people for things that are not a crime here?British courts should refuse to act on an EU arrest warrant requesting the extradition of an alleged Holocaust denier, a senior Lib Dem has said.Australian citizen Dr Gerald Toben was remanded in custody after his arrest by British Police at Heathrow Airport.German authorities allege Dr Toben published material online "of an anti-semitic and
September has been ridiculously busy both at work and in Real Life™ and now it’s time to play catchup and tell you, dear readers, what I’ve been up to. First of all, skip back a few weeks and I went down to Bath for another BarCamp. BarCamp is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos and interaction from participants. I’d already been to BarCamps in Leeds and Newcastle (BarCamp North East) bu
Comment & analysis round-up Quote of the day: “After the game I was apprehensive about him, I was afraid, because I saw Didier’s face in the dressing room. I thought maybe I would lose him for a long time. But when the doctors said to me, ‘Look Felipe, [it is] nothing about his cruciate’, I was relieved and more confident. I think that in one month, maximum, he is starting to play again. I prayed for Didier because he is part of my family, all of the players are my family. I asked to my Go
Strawberry Fields Forever - The Beatles This is from the Love album, produced by George Martin and Giles Martin. This mix uses a Lennon demo as its basic premise and grabs elements from a bunch of other Beatles songs — an orchestral section from Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, a solo piano from In My Life, brass from Penny Lane, cello and harpsicord from Piggies and the coda from Hello, Goodbye. The result is complete awesomeness.
XX Sports Radio: Tony Gwynn Intereview (MP3) Tony Gwynn gives the Dodgers credit. The Dodgers hitters are making the pitchers work. The Dodgers have earned it. Other than Mark DeRosa, the Cubs haven't been able to put it together. He thought "Zambrano threw the crap out of the ball" but his defense couldn't back him up. Fukudome isn't aggressive on balls that are out. The Cubs are only aggressive on middle-in. Fukudome has been off balance. Gwynn thinks DeRosa will be in right field tom
I love the fact that George Martin is sharing his musical legacy with his son. It is the best thing that he could pass along to his boy. Imagine not only working along side your father with his legacy laid out in front of you, but actually being given an opportunity to tweak it and play around. The LOVE project was an audio sandbox, and I couldn’t think of anyone other than George and Giles to make sandcastles with. Lots of people were a bit upset that Giles was “given” the project. I thin
Review: Dirty Sexy Money 2x1 Posted 3 days ago at 11:08 | Post a comment | In the US: Wednesdays, 10/9c, ABC In the UK: Channel 4, probably sometime in January if their acquisitions budget holds up As we've found out already, the US writers' strike has proved to be a boon creatively (if not ratingsly) for a host of shows. Heroes has come back refreshed, albeit daft as a brush as always; My Name is Earl is back on track, but still not desperately funny; and The Unit is vibrant and excitin
Review: The Border 2x1 Posted 3 days ago at 15:11 | 4 comments | In Canada: Mondays, 9pm, CBC Not so long ago, there was a writers' strike in the US. Faced with the unthinkable prospect of watching British television, I decided to have a look at some of the programmes available from other countries - in particular, Canada. CBC's The Border was one such programme and to my incredible surprise, it turned out not just to be a good programme "by Canadian standards"* but a good programme, full
Review: Chuck 2x1 Posted 3 days ago at 10:35 | 2 comments | In the US: Mondays, 8/7c, NBC In the UK: Probably Virgin One again Chuck was a show that had a lot of initial promise that it never quite managed to live up to. Chuck (Zachery Levi), a tech support guy for a consumer goods superstore, accidentally gets all the CIA's and NSA's intelligence data dumped into his brain and so gets thrown into the deep end of spy work. Assigned to protect him are the NSA's John Casey (DanielAdam Bald
Review: Life 2x1 Posted 3 days ago at 10:01 | 3 comments | In the US: Mondays and Fridays, 10/9c, NBC. Moving to just Fridays from the 3rd. In the UK: Still not yet acquired, unless Hallmark hasn't told me something There are so many cop shows out there that each needs its own gimmick to differentiate itself from the other. The traditional way of doing this is with the lead cop - Columbo, the down-at-heel, working class detective; Ironside, the detective in a wheelchair; Raines, the dete
