Guitar Hero Aerosmith this summer

March 26th, 2008
By Mike

Activision will have a new version of “Guitar Hero” this summer.
The popular video game will feature Aerosmith, in the new version called “Guitar Hero: Aerosmith.” It will feature about 30 Aerosmith songs, along with tracks from various opening acts for the classic rock band. Activision says the 30 songs will cover the 30 years the band has been around, reaching all the way back from high school up to today’s rock star status. The company has not said if they will offer a new controller or not, but they are working with the band on the new title.
Kai Huang, head of Activision’s RedOctane unit, which guides development of the franchise, told Reuters in an interview…
To recreate the sense of attending an Aerosmith concert, developers held motion-capture sessions with band members, including frontman Steven Tyler and lead guitarist Joe Perry. “As you play,” Huang said, “you’re going to be seeing Joe and Steven doing their moves onstage.”

Gibson no Guitar Hero?

March 25th, 2008
By Mike

We’ve read several confusing and conflicting reports about Gibson Guitars suing over the patent regarding the Guitar Hero and Rock Band video games. The timing seems suspicious. Is it that these huge corporations waited until they saw the huge profits coming in from the overwhelming popularity of these games?
Finally we came upon this updated news story from blog.wired.com. They have posted both Gibson’s original press statement in regards to the Harmonix lawsuit, and the original source story on Reuters.com.
We don’t want to believe the beloved Gibson Guitars folks have gotten greedy like the rest of the corporate world. Thanks to the blog.wired.com post, it’s clear now that Gibson is just protecting their intellectual property rights, which they filed a patent on in 1999.
Besides, Gibson is building real guitars, has always set a standard a fret above the rest, and they’re already on the cutting edge of technology with their self-tuning guitar.

Guitar Hero Air Guitar Rocker

March 22nd, 2008
By Mike

I thought I had seen just about everything related to the guitar, until I found this story on Yahoo’s main page.
Gearlog.com has a really great story about the Guitar Hero game craze, and those who carry it just a little too far. (Like gig bags, guitar stands and effects pedals for their controllers.)
I actually laughed out loud when I saw this YouTube video for GH Air Guitar Rocker. The guy doing the demo kind of reminds me of a cross between Elvis and Ozzy. LOL!!
How many times have you rocked out on an imaginary air guitar to your favorite rock song?

Who put 'Wii Music' in my Guitar Hero?

Filed under: Nintendo Wii, Rhythm Hoping to somehow diminish our aversion to the sight of Miis playing musical instruments, Vicarious Visions is working the user-created, er ... "avatars" into the Wii version of Guitar Hero World Tour in a so-called unique way. In an interview with IGN, the developer explained how the recently revealed Mii mode, known as "Mii Freestyle," will work. Using the guitar or drumkit peripherals (or, if you're crazy so inclined, the Wiimote and Nunchuck for "air dr

Another Guitar Hero World Tour peripheral in the works?

Filed under: Gaming, Peripherals The folks at G4 have a juicy tidbit on the upcoming Guitar Hero World Tour cacophony of simulated instruments: there might be another one in the works. G4 cites Neversoft's Brian Bright, who let slip that a new peripheral is coming, and will be designed specifically for the music-creating Studio mode (pictured above). The logical choice is a keyboard, since it's the preferred method for entering melodies and other mundane tasks by boring people, but we're secre

Mystery Guitar Hero: World Tour Peripheral Just for Studio Mode

G4 says they've got a scoop on a Guitar Hero: World Tour peripheral that hasn't been announced yet, one that's just for the game's studio mode to help you make music. It's not for the game mode at all, apparently. We're kind of thinkin' accordion, but G4 guesses it'll be a keyboard. Another option is something like Beatmania's turntable/keyboard controller, or this fine musical instrument. [G4]

Rumor: Another Guitar Hero World Tour peripheral

Filed under: Peripherals, Rhythm G4 claims to have gotten "the hot word" on a new Guitar Hero World Tour peripheral from Neversoft's Brian Bright who "wouldn't go into detail about what it will be," though he apparently said the new peripheral was "specifically for the game's Studio mode." We've reached out to Activision for some kind of comment or confirmation; however, until then, speculation seems to be the name of the game. G4 is guessing keyboard, which is all well and good. And who know

Teen Drops Out of School to Play Guitar Hero

Many parents of gifted children allow their kids to take time off of school to pursue their artistic or athletic vocation. But what if that vocation is playing video games? Meet Blake Peebles, a 16-year-old from Raleigh, North Carolina who is one of the best Guitar Hero players in the country—meaning, he has a rare talent for pressing buttons on a toy guitar hooked up to a TV screen. Last September, Blake’s parents finally gave in to his repeated requests to drop out of high school and focus o

Guitar Hero: World Tour Preview

Rock out with your socks out! I know many of you have already jumped on the RockBand wagon but ol’ Canucklehead here is sticking with Guitar Hero, mainly because I already own and that’s the way I roll. (read: cheap) Besides, it appears that with the newest incarnation coming out this fall, Guitar Hero will now have all the things that others told me made RockBand better - that being a drum and microphone. I think it goes without saying but just in case - all the instruments will in fact be wi

Is ‘Guitar Hero’ saving rock ‘n’ roll?

Is ‘Guitar Hero’ saving rock ‘n’ roll? That’s the question posed in an article at CNN in talking about the great success that video games such as Rock Band and Guitar Hero are having on the popularity of bands such as Aerosmith, Guns & Roses and Metallica. It’s pretty clear from the article that there has been an increase in the visibility of rock music amongst kids as my 13 year old can attest. But isn’t this all part of the typical pendulum that rock and roll swings upon, albeit with a so

Rumor: Guitar Hero World Tour to Add New Peripheral

G4TV is reporting from Deutschland, that the upcoming Guitar Hero World Tour will include a new peripheral for gamers to use.  While the news has not been confirmed by Activision, rumor is that the new peripheral will be a keyboard of some type to help with the mixing of custom tracks. So just for the record, it looks as if a box with three new plastic instruments is not enough.  We now need to add even more plastic in the box to make the game a deeper experience.  And I remember when people l

Beer Goes Well With Guitar Hero: World Tour [Games Convention 2008]

Activision has beer, and they're not afraid to use it. By the time I showed up for my hands on with Activision's Guitar Hero: World Tour yesterday afternoon I had already accidentally downed one beer, having mistaken a bottle with a grapefruit on front of it as fruit juice, instead of the grapefruit-flavored beer that was actually hiding within the bottle. Sneaky beer. Then another was shared with Neversoft's project director Brian Bright upon arriving at Activision's booth for my appointment,

Guitar Hero and Rock Band, Saving Rock and Roll, One Nerdly Prepubescent at a Time

There’s a lot that can be said about how frigging awesome Rock Band and Guitar Hero are. I won’t say it all here, because, frankly, you don’t need me to. You know they rule. I know they rule. Now, America is starting to realize they rule. (Yes, by “America” I mean “corporate stiffs and douchebags that still control the music industry”.) Via Heavy D, it appears that not only is the rock and roll becoming more popular with younger kids who didn’t know about the sweet, sweet power of Blue Oyste

On Tour Decades looks a lot like Guitar Hero: On Tour

Filed under: Screens Something magical happens when a game's sequel is released only a few months after the original: they tend to look exactly the same. When those games are part of a franchise that pretty much always looks the same (look, there are guitars and dudes playing them; what more do you want?), then, well ... you really can't expect anything different. There are legwarmers to sign, though. And platform shoes. That's how you tell the decades apart. Genius. Guitar Hero: On Tour Deca

Teen girls get Aly & AJ guitar controllers

When most people think of gamers, they think of guys. While that is fairly accurate, many girls also enjoy playing video games. One the most popular genres with the ladies are music games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band. The plain and masculine guitar controllers typically available with the games can be a problem for the ladies. Thankfully girly controllers are available in the aftermarket. PDP has announced that new guitar controllers compatible with both Rock Band and Guitar Hero will be ava
