I always liked the band Heart, not only because Ann and Nancy Wilson were both great vocalists, but also because they liked Led Zeppelin, and used those influences in their own music. My favorite Heart album is Dog & Butterfly because of the song “Mistral Wind,” which conjures up shades of Zeppelin from Physical [...]
One of the appealing things about running to me was its simplicity - you get a good pair of shoes and that's all you need to start running. Well, I've found that's not true at all, there's an endless supply of gear to help make it easier and better, but it's confusing! What are new runner essentials? Ali Susan Paul replies: Dear Ali, running IS simple, primal really; but like anything else in life, we can make it as simple or as complex as we choose. Essentially, running shoes are the single m
The Sun is my favorite magazine. I was reading the December issue, which contained a spoof political piece by the man who calls himself Sparrow. He writes: "We are close the fifth year of the disastrous American occupation of Iraq. Nearly four thousand US soldiers have died, and uncounted number of Iraqi citizens. Why is there so little public outrage in the United States over this ruthless, heart-stabbing war? I can see by one reason: only human beings are dying. Unfortunately we must demand
It's the time of year when a thick blanket of snow has fallen on the Magical Kingdom of Imagination that lies deep within the boundaries of Willow House. The time of year when some intrepid English Peg Fairies descend from the magic castle and carefully make their way into the valley. Each one is hoping that someone, somewhere will choose her to be a companion and each little peg fairy is hoping that maybe, just maybe she will be allowed to sit in that most magical place of all - the

I really dig these feather necklaces from Miss KK. They're whimsical and edgy, just how I like it. I found them on the lovely online boutique that is Bona Drag. Fotos Bonadrag {Click to enlarge}. Beijos.
Gucci has signed up Rihanna for its annual Unicef campaign to benefit African HIV/AIDS infected children, orphans. The collection is called Tattoo Heart and it features the Gucci symbols (the horsebit and the web) in mostly Red and Green on White background, something we’re most used seeing chez Gucci. The design is highly cartoonish and contrasting, rather out of Rihanna’s usual fetish style. The collection will be available starting November 19th 2008 up until the end of January 2009.

What can be dished up tart or sweet and melds with turkey and trail mix as easily as bread and sauces? Cranberries. And they’re so good for you, why limit them to holiday fare? Here are five reasons to eat them year-round: 1. They’re antioxidant all-stars. Cranberries have more of these disease-fighters than do apples, red grapes, strawberries, oranges, bananas, pears, grapefruit, pineapples, and peaches! And the antioxidant roster includes powerful resveratrol, the heart protector in red wine

On the Mountain Goats, from the Stylus archives: Listen, I’m a Mountain Goats fan, and as a Mountain Goats fan, you have, I think, signed an abstract agreement with The Spirits by some manner of psychic bloodshed to not only accept John Darnielle’s pinpricks of clarity and revelation, but to bob in their wake, to tremble at their touch, to laugh at their insight, etc. It’s the difficult high you chase in the music—the second that shines. Arcing narratives, tape hiss, “ultra-literate” and “ref

Pascendi Dominici Gregis ENCYCLICAL OF POPE PIUS X, SEPTEMBER 8, 1907 VENERABLE BRETHREN, HEALTH AND THE APOSTOLIC BLESSING: 1. One of the primary obligations assigned by Christ to the office divinely committed to Us of feeding the Lord's flock is that of guarding with the greatest vigilance the deposit of the faith delivered to the saints, rejecting the profane novelties of words and the gainsaying of knowledge falsely so called. The news below posted on Chip MacGregor's blog doesn't help my waiting: Ouch. I don't mean to be the bearer of bad news, but today was a really, REALLY lousy day for all of us who work in publishing. Today... -Simon & Schuster cut 35 people (2% of its workforce). -Thomas Nelson cut 54 people (10% of its workforce). -Random House axed some of its top people and announced it is restructuring -- and will disband the Doubleday Publishing Group. -It has been reported that Houghton Miffl
Every week I get the amazing opportunity to go into the public schools with an organization called Kids for Christ. I have been helping Kids for Christ for 3 years now and I got to tell you, it has been awesome. Bob Heath the founder of Kids for Christ has a heart for God and the Children of this nation. He also has a radio show that he does every week and I had the pleasure of being one of his guest. To find out more about Kids for Christ you can go to: kfcusa.org If you would like to l
Mere Comments has been difficult (but still enjoyable!) to maintain, and we've hung in there through this fall and I plan to continue it, with help, going forward in 2009. A number of the Touchstone editors will be gathering in Chicago in mid-January to discuss and make plans for the magazine, as we normally have done annually or semi-annually as schedules (and funds) permit. Mere Comments will be on the agenda. The times dictate that we strive all the more diligently to emphasize the unchan
Thailand's revered king on Thursday failed to deliver his traditional birthday speech, dashing Thai hopes that the address would help resolve the country's political paralysis and unify a divided nation. King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who turns 81 on Friday, was unable to deliver the speech "because he was a little sick," his son, Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn, told dignitaries gathered at the Dusit Palace to hear the king. The comments were broadcast live on radio. While the king is known to be unwe
