Dan Fogelberg, singer-songwriter-folk-rock-performer, passed away Sunday at age 56.
Fogelberg was another victim of prostate cancer, following Frank Zappa who also died prematurely from the same disease in 1993.
There’s an outpouring of emotion across the web and across the country for this gentle voice and beautiful soul, including pal Jackson Browne.
Some very moving words and advice [...]
So Celine Dion did not tack her new single onto the end of "At Seventeen" and rumors of Prince joining the Time at the Grammy afterparty at Club Nokia did not come true. All in all, Grammy nominations night was a pleasant exercise - a decent show, a good party and a fabulous museum to explore. Story about the nominations is here. I had seen the museum before the artifacts were in place - vast majority of the displays were up and running - and it is a considerably different experience than wh

Here's something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue. Sera Cahoone - "Runnin' Your Way" (from Only As The Day Is Long) Old soul Sera Cahoone spins warm, spare indie folk with a dash of hope added to larger doses of melancholy. Bonus points for the understated banjo and pedal steel sweeteners. Glen Campbell - "These Days" (from Meet Glen Campbell) Campbell's honey-dipped vocals get a sympathetic production on a welcome return to form, none better than this graceful take on

GREGG ALLMAN BAND - BOSTON 1974 November 30, 2008 – 4:28 am Click on the panels for a better view or to download artwork. GREGG ALLMAN BAND Boston 1974 [no label, 2CD] Live at the Boston Music Hall, Boston, MA, April 8, 1974. Very good soundboard. What if guitarist Duane Allman had not died in a motorcycle accident in 1971? That question must have crossed any fan’s mind when listening to the Allman’s At Fillmore East. That show/album made Duane a star, if he wasn’t one already, and th

Acid rock influenced by Hendrix and Clapton guitarwork but with an added pop / garage psych edge. Fuzzed out wah-wah -guitar will impress. A Los Angeles band formed by Bobby Arlin after he quit The Leaves. The first album is hard rock with psychedelic undertones, the second is the more structured of the two - both are worth investigating, and

If it hadn’t happened to you before now, and if you went anywhere at all today, you experienced your first assault for this year of Christmas music. Now, some of the best music of any kind ever written was written for or about Christmas, but, for the most part, that’s not what you heard. You heard grotesquely overproduced versions of familiar carols. You heard original songs that were corny/ maudlin beyond belief. And you heard arrangements of familiar holiday fare that were beyond ill-advis

Written by Tim Saunders Jackson Browne is getting together some of his best musical friends for a benefit concert this weekend. Ben Harper, Bonnie Raitt, Ry Cooder, and Joan Baez will band together to raise money for Operation USA on Saturday, November 29, to support the organization’s ongoing disaster relief efforts in the U.S. Gulf Coast, Cuba and Haiti, with specific focus on programs addressing the urgent local needs of displaced families and health facilities stretched to breaking point.
For the past few months, I have been trying to find a joke that describes the differences between Democrats and Republicans. There are several parts to this joke comparing the attitudes and behaviors of such individuals. The punch line for the last comparison points out that the difference between Democrats and Republicans is why there are so few Republicans and so many Democrats. But now matter how I phrase the search, I can’t seem to find the joke. It’s not that I haven’t found jokes with th

The word "Thanksgiving" has many meanings. In historical context, the Pilgrims gave thanks for their new home, free of the religious persecution they escaped in Europe. In modern times, it means food. Lots of it. And family get-togethers. And football. And turkey. Lots of turkey. Here,we're serving up the turkey as well, celebrating the second annual "2008 Turkey Of The Year," devoted to the year's masters of media buffoonery. And what a year it was! Of course, it was all about the election this
The Santa Monica music shop has been celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and will be the subject of a Thanksgiving program from 9 a.m. to noon on KCRW (89.9 FM), hosted by the Pico Boulevard shop's concert promoter, Lincoln Myerson. The New Yorker's Goings On blog says today of McCabe's, "In the late sixties, it began a concert series, and many notable acts, including Jackson Browne (a then unknown artist who opened the first official concert, in 1969), the Sun Ra Arkestra, Charlie Haden,
Thanksgiving is tomorrow for us Americans, so Listening Post would like to take the time today to give thanks for the stellar year in music. Here are five examples of why it was exceedingly easy to tune in, turn on, and rock out in 2008. The Return of My Bloody Valentine After the reunion of the Pixies in 2004, there were few bands left alive that Listening Post would chase around the country, along with other thankful hordes. My Bloody Valentine was the top dog among that slender contingent
