Lead & Synthetic Turf - MEALEY'S James Cordrey updates us on the "tips of the iceberg"

Legal and public-policy experts predicted that the lead issue in synthetic turf wasn't going away.  Given the growing distrust in federal agencies, they anticipated that litigation would proceed despite the CPSC's clean bill of health on the amount of lead in synthetic turf. Well, MEALEY's Lead Report Legal Editor James Cordrey is bringing us up-to-date on the litigation in California and Chicago.  Cordrey captures the zeitgeist by quoting a source who spoke off-the-record to his publication.

Did Obama really brand David Cameron "a lightweight"?

Today's New Statesman contain an article (not yet online) in which it is suggested that after meeting David Cameron in London in July, the now President-elect described the Tory leader as "a lightweight". Its author James McIntyre suggests: "On meeting Cameron, Obama was, according to diplomatic sources, “distinctly unimpressed”, contrary to some reports (excitedly spun by the Conservatives) which suggested that the two men had formed an instant “bond”. Instead, I have been told, Obama exclai

From the discard bin: Black Music

Billy Black Music , Gavin Petrie Editor and Designer (New York: Hamlyn, 1974) came out of the discard bin last week.  Confident from my new-found ventriloquism skills and cheered on by Paul's suggestion that I make this a feature I went looking for more discarded treasures.  And how could I NOT grab a book with Billy Preston on the front?  Sorry I forgot to scan the front before I released it back into the wild. The Minority Report

Dec 1, 2008 By Andrew Adam Newman Source: BrandWeek Black athletes, musicians and actors figure more prominently in ad campaigns than ever, but the chances that African Americans actually created those ads are pretty slim. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics data from January 2008, the advertising field -- defined as advertising and PR agencies, as well as media, direct mail and other operations exclusively devoted to creating and delivering ads -- is just 5 percent African American, 3 per

Campbell Brown, Sexist Pig

Jump to Comments I learned a long time ago, writing captions for photos in magazines and newspapers, that context is everything. Even pictures can mean vastly different things, depending on context, for example, I can show you a picture of a vacant lot, overgrown with weeds and maybe some typical urban trash. And I can provide you with two captions: Urban permaculture project seeks answers to invasive species problem … or Land use regulations create headaches for developers and eyesores for the

It Is Happening Again

I hope everyone noticed the piece our old pal Justin Anderson wrote (nearly a month ago) about the continuing State Museum fiasco. The story revealed that over the past 2 years, the Division of Culture and History has paid North Carolina consultant James Scott Hunt over a quarter of a million dollars to “work,” part time, on the serially unfinished State Museum. $156,525 in 2007, and $133,875 as of October 2008. That’s $13,000 a month for PART TIME WORK. Now I know I often say that if you want s

It isn't the holidays 'til you push play

Michael Phillips will share his holiday cinematic tradition tomorrow, but for now here's food for thought: There's a great scene in the film "Scrooged" in which evil television executive Francis X. Cross (Bill Murray) recounts his childhood memories, and a Marley-type ghost (David Johansen) tells him that his reminiscences are not his own but are in fact plots stolen from "Little House on the Prairie" and "The Courtship of Eddie's Father." Ah, TV. If it's not showing us a picture of a cracklin

“YOU DON’T KNOW STEPHON MARBURY”

”THE QUINTESSENTIAL SELFISH ATHLETE”                            You want to talk about Stephon Marbury’s exile from the Knicks… after not jumping at the opportunity for playing time offered by Mike D’Antoni. Yeah, you want to talk about ”he said-he said”, Marbury’s “unprofessionalism”, that he is — as one ESPN pundit said this week — “the quintessential selfish athlete”. That’s right. You want to talk about his selfishness — not his selflessness. Fine, soon enough. But to

Rihanna & Chris Brown Sued By Photographer

A photographer won’t stop the music until Rihanna and Chris Brown have forked over $1 million. Luis Santana, a shutterbug for Florida’s St. Petersburg Times, is suing the R&B crooners, claiming their bodyguards beat him and confiscated his camera after he caught them leaving the Vintage Ultra Lounge together in early May. Santana tells E! News he was invited to the nightclub to take pictures of the twosome celebrating Brown’s 19th birthday. He said Brown’s bodyguards told him he

Bush Still Lies about Iraqi InspectionsBy Robert Parry - Consortium NewsIn what’s been called George W. Bush’s first exit interview, the outgoing President continues a lie that he first unveiled several months after launching the Iraq War, justifying the invasion by claiming that Saddam Hussein didn’t let the U.N. inspectors in.Like previous times when President Bush has used this lie, it went unchallenged by the journalist who heard the false claim, in this case ABC News anchor Charles Gibson.A

Gift Suggestions For The Music Lover In Your Life: Box Sets and Books

by vivrant thang on musical gifts It’s the most wonderful time of the year! At least that’s what I’m trying to tell myself. Viv is struggling a bit to get into the spirit of her favorite holiday. However, I’m sure as I start decorating and shopping, things will seem brighter. There won’t be a whole lot of gifts under my tree this year. (Won’t be buying that many either). But I do plan to treat myself to a few things to satisfy my musical sweet tooth. Over the next week, I’ll be doing a couple o
