Events like the Grammys are great learning moments. There’s so much more to most of these artists than their “hit songs.” Once you dig into their catalog and their roots, you find all kinds of things you may not have known before. But one thing’s for sure. This year’s [...]

In the first part of her ORDER OF MYTHS/Sundance Institute Art House Project tour diary, filmmaker Margaret Brown visited Ann Arbor, MI and Columbia, MO. In today's installment, she starts off by heading to Nashville, TN: NASHVILLE Nashville was old school. It wouldn’t be a tour without waking up on a stained mattress in an unventilated basement. In Nashville, my friend Ari gave me a poem by Denis Johnson and I heard a JJ Cale album I had forgotten. There was a bizarre number of people from

A few months back, I was excited to find a copy of Valverde Brothers' After Midnight LP. I mostly excited about picking up a copy of this record, which was released in 1978, due to the album's title track "After Midnight", which is a cover to the much popular J.J. Cale song written back in 1972. The record was also arranged by Stefan Klinkhammer, who was the mind behind the German studio act Hot Blood. As a whole, "After Midnight" is definitely the most standout track with the other covers and o
Let me say this first and foremost. If you like your GEEE-tar then you’ll like ol’ JJ Cale. Bluesy guitar tunes without that melancholy edge, just wonderful music with catchy rhythms, wonderful lyrics and a wholesome feel. You’ll probably recognise a lot of the tunes of his as they’ve been covered a lot of times by various people including the famous cover of cocaine by Eric Clapton. Really though, don’t listen to Eric. Eric Schmeric. J.J. Cale is where it’s at. Take a listen and see for yours

Charlie Wadhams Elgin Park Recordings (2008) *** Unlike, Rex Aquarium, Charlie Wadhams’ prior musical outlet with younger brother, his solo debut is not the fizzier pop rock of his past days. His solo debut, Free Your Schedule, is decidedly a toned-down, bluesy folk affair produced by Michael Andrews (the guy who composed the soundtrack for Danny Darko). The sophisticated sound of Wadhams’ album gives off a meditative 70’s singer/songwriter vibe, while his lilting voice mingles in the atm
Eric Clapton Discography Rock, Blues | 45 CD | 1965-2006 | Flac | 23 GBEric Patrick Clapton, CBE (born 30 March 1945), is an English blues-rock guitarist, singer, songwriter and composer. He is "probably most famous for his mastery of the Stratocaster guitar"[2]. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Yardbirds, of Cream, and as a solo performer. Often viewed by critics and fans alike as one of the greatest guitarists of all time[3], Clapton was ranked fourth in R
Brenda, June and Leslie left comments last Sunday when I wrote a post on what to write about, and I’ve been thinking about what they said on and off all week.Blogland is a huge community made up of thousands (maybe hundreds of thousands) of smaller communities, so it’s really a refection of what life itself is like.I agree with Leslie when she says that most of us are interested in specific types of blogs, ones that tend to dovetail with our interests and have a “personality” that speaks to us.
I have been listening to a certain segment of Eric Clapton's music for twenty-odd years: roughly, from his Bluebreakers period (1965) until Slowhand, which came out in 1977. When I was in high school, I, alone amidst my peers, held a torch for Clapton, and insisted that he could stand up to Jimi Hendrix. Then, about a year ago, I posted here, insisting once and for all that Hendrix was the superior guitar stylist. As though the Gods devised the whole game to torment me, I then found myself drawn
HTML clipboard . J. J. Cale (born John W. Cale on December 5, 1938, in Tulsa, Oklahoma) is a Grammy Award-winning American songwriter and musician best known for writing two songs that Eric Clapton made famous, "After Midnight" and "Cocaine", as well as the Lynyrd Skynyrd hits "Call Me the Breeze" and " I Got the Same Old Blues". Some sources incorrectly give his real name as "Jean Jacques Cale". According to keyboard player, Rocky Frisco, "The 'Jean Jaques' crap was created by a drunk Fr

Flipping switches to save America in a rustic NYC voting booth It’s only been 24 hours, but I’m already 100 years away from feeling like this. Pride. After 8 years of hanging my head, this is a great new sensation. Now for some upswinging American music: JJ Cale - Woke Up This Morning (from Anyway the Wind Blows) Laid-back and easy soundtrack for a new day. The Chambers Brothers - Time Has Come Today (from The Time has Come, 1968) Eleven minutes of psychedelic soul madness, all of i
Ten finalists have been named by Oklahoma’s Official Rock Song Advisory Panel in a contest to elect the Official Rock ‘N’ Roll Song of Oklahoma. Among the contenders are bluesman J.J. Cale, new wavers the Call, surf heroes the Ventures, ’50s rockabilly goddess Wanda Jackson, pop-rockers the All-American Rejects, and psychedelic eccentrics the Flaming Lips. The Oklahoma History Center will celebrate the state’s rock ‘n’ roll history with an exhibit entitled “Another Hot Oklahoma Night,” slate
Yesterday we wrote David Wain and asked him if there was going to be a soundtrack to "Role Models," his upcoming comedy with Paul Rudd, McLovin' (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), Elizabeth Banks and Sean William Scott and he said, "hmm, probably not." We were bummed, but then we thought, hell. Well, what songs are in the movie? This way if you can get your hands on some of the tracks, you can make your own soundtrack. And well, Mr. Wain was kind enough to oblige. The film features a score and songs by
Today the Community thought it may be decent to address some jams that give us boners, but don’t get their proper due in most circles. We tried to mix it up a little bit, hopefully providing a little bit of decency for everyone. Check them out: Miles Davis - Filles De Kiliminjaro - When I think of Miles Davis, the first albums to come to mind are Kind of Blue, Birth of The Cool, and Bitches Brew, but Filles De Kiliminjaro is some pretty laid-back shit. Miles’ last album before moving m
