Events like the Grammys are great learning moments. There’s so much more to most of these artists than their “hit songs.” Once you dig into their catalog and their roots, you find all kinds of things you may not have known before. But one thing’s for sure. This year’s [...]

Today is the birthday of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee (with Ike) Tina Turner; she’s 69. The Ike and Tina Turner Revue was one of the highest energy ensembles on the soul circuit in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. Ike Turner had begun as a bandleader and talent scout in the ‘40s for blues and R&B performers. He recorded “Rocket 88,” considered by many the first rock ‘n’ roll recording, under the name of his baritone sax player, Jackie Brenston, in 1951. Turner and his band, the Kings of
Comeback albums are a beautiful thing. If you’re a longtime fan of that one band that used to be awesome but has spent their last decade cranking out the most godawful music of their career, the moment when they finally get their shit together again on record can be absolutely life affirming. For the artist, that comeback album that they just KNEW they had in them opens up the doors for a fruitful late career resurgence to cement their legacy as one of the all-time greats. At least, until they
John Fogerty - Sail Away Mama, come look quick - there’s a light up in the sky; I see the silent ship, and it’s calling you and I; And if you listen close, the reasons all come clear; I’m ready now to go, there’s nothing left to fear. Oh there’s nothing left to fear. Leavin’ all of this pain behind, gonna sail away; Lettin’ all of these chains unwind, gonna steal away. Mama, come look quick - do I see an open door? The passageway is lit, an’ it’s time to get on board. What wonders we
Sad news -- the great Belgian pop artist Guy Peellaert has died. Peellaert, of course, did memorable album covers for the Rolling Stones and David Bowie , but he made his biggest splash in 1974 with the brilliant Rock Dreams . Here's my review from The Magazine Formerly Known as Stereo Review in December of that year. In retrospect, that Dylan portrait below is my fave, by the way. DREAM SEQUENCE By now you're probably seen Rock Dreams , Guy Peellaert and Nik Cohn's brilliant pict

Although encamped right across the bay from San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury, CCR never injected the slightest hint of peace, love and understanding into its
I’m going to share three Thursday Thirteens I wrote about Thanksgiving this week. November 2005 (which ended up being Mom’s last Thanksgiving): Ok, Happy Thanksgiving!!! The turkey is roasting, the pumpkin pie is cooling, the candles are lit, the house is clean (for the first time in AGES) and I’m taking a bit of a break, sipping my coffee and listening to Christmas carols and there is snow on the ground, apparently we’re having a White Thanksgiving On to the Thanksgiving Thursday Thirteen

by Robert Wilkinson November accents the water sign Scorpio, where we transcend the forms we’ve glimpsed up to now and move deeper into the experience of people and activities. We can concentrate power by purifying ourselves of obsolete or stagnant feelings, and going deeper into our mystery to regenerate what we need to get from here to where we're going. It’s definitely the heart of Autumn, with its focus on harvesting that which is pleasing, socializing and connecting while seeing the end
I heard a voice cryin' in the deep, “Come join me, baby, in my endless sleep" From the late great Jody Reynolds, the classic rock n' Roll hit Endless Sleep from 1958, a track that sold over a million copies and reached number 5 in the Billboard Charts. This is a wonderful song, a powerful ballad sung above a wonderful rock n roll riff. The lyrics here are heavy with portents, bleak imagery and darkness but ultimately redemptive. It's a dark stormy night. Almost apocalyptic. Panicking for

Creedence Clearwater Revival released a most impressive run of six sizzling roots rock albums between the span of 1968 to 1970 (hear that, Axl?). Chief revivalist John Fogerty appropriated the sounds of the swampland — although he grew up in California — and crafted a distinctive, brand of Americana resulting in a slew of hit singles (and imitators). For years, most fans were content to enjoy the radio staples on collections like Chronicles Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. Diehards - wanting to devour all
For many bands, rocking you hard isn’t enough. They feel the need to tell you how hard they’re rocking you. So as a tribute to the many groups too insecure to let the music speak for itself…let there be rock.Ludwig Van 88 - We Will Rock You (Queen)I don’t when Ludwig plans on rocking me, but until then I’ll settle for being pleasantly reggaeed. For those of you wondering what ever happened to Sunday Savings (yea, all both of ya), it's back. I've still been playing The Grocery Game, but had a few Sundays recently where life kind of took over and I didn't have time to shop as strategically as I would have liked. I have however, without fail, been collecting my weekly coupons and filing them away until Miss Veronica seems to have put on a few L.B.'s and is getting a little on the heavy side. In fact, I almost couldn't button her closed
