The NAMM Show ‘08 starts this Thursday January 17th and runs through Sunday the 20th, at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California. It should be interesting to see what this part of the music industry is doing. We already know the record labels are losing ground fast, so we need another part [...]
I'm sorry for the lack of trivia last week, but I was attending a funeral in Boston for my husband's grandmother. I thought I'd do a belated edition, but the craziness of Thanksgiving festivities got to me. I'm back this week, with fun facts about December!*On December 1, 1955 Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on the bus.* John Lennon was assassinated on December 8, 1980.* The clip-on tie is said to have been created on December 13, 1928.* Snow White premiered in theater
stripes and puppy slippers Alright... where do I start. Thursday, Thanksgiving day. We woke to our alarm clock beep beep beeping, rolled towards each other and said "happy Thanksgiving" being careful to not bless the other with our lovely morning breath. We ate smoothies, and no coffee, for we were off to Thanksgiving Yoga at the studio. 8:30am, we walk into the yoga studio to see 25+ mats laid out, scootching them closer to fit more people as we walked in. It was a donation only cl
Today is Monday, Dec. 1, the 336th day of 2008.There are 30 days left in the year.Today's Highlight in History:On Dec. 1, 1955, Rosa Parks, a black seamstress, refused to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery, Ala., city bus. The long-awaited Criterion Collection DVD edition of Wes Anderson's debut feature "Bottle Rocket" which came out last Tuesday (November 25). We watched it last weekend and took massive and stupidly long notes, which we've already covered in five other pieces. Be forewarned, this post is painfully long. To be quick, it's really nice to see the film in real widescreen and not in the original pan and scan of the one-disc Sony version. It really is a revelation to see this "new" version. It looks
Many years ago, John Lennon wrote a song about his perfect world, envisioning a place where people got along and no one suffered. I'm often asked what I realistically think can be accomplished by my campaign against horse slaughter, neglect and abuse. I'm often asked this by people who think the world can't and won't change. Here are some things that have already happened (and those of you who are my age or older, c'mon, admit it, you never thought this stuff would ever happen!)Major racetracks B
Well, it’s just been a busy week in the land of revealed truth! How about a Sunday roundup? Few political powers religious organizations have a memory as long as the Vatican’s, and so really, it’s surprisingly soon for them to be forgiving John Lennon for observing (probably accurately) that the Beatles were (when he made the comment 40 years ago) more popular than Jesus. At the time, the comment led believers to burn Beatles albums in large pyres, recalling all kinds of fun bits of Christian
Soldiers and Civilians Team Up, Plant 6 Million Trees in a Single Day6 million trees can't be wrong, especially if they are all being planted in one day by thousands of people joining together, united by visionary, inspired activist and opera singer, Boris Trajanov - and even more so if they are replacements to forests that have been claimed by wildfires two summers in a row. 1000 soldiers were included in the good works alongside of thousands of civilians in a collaborative effort to bus the
When I was in my early twenties, and on the dole, I had a friend who worked on the barely-remembered Mike Smith TV quiz ‘That’s Showbusiness’. I sometimes used to go down to recordings at the BBC on Oxford Road in Manchester to avail myself of the sparkling white wine and crudites in the green room. Mike McGear, formerly of the band The Scaffold (’Lily the Pink’) was at one of these recordings. I was beside myself with excitement: Mike is the brother of Paul McCartney. I felt that this was g
The Chum Bucket: John McCaine vs. Jackson Browne + MoreNow that the election is over, John McCain is fighting back against at least one artist who didn't want him using his music. [Reuters] The Roots narrowly avoided serious injury after their double-decker bus crashed. [Pitchfork] Paul McCartney says he still thinks of John Lennon while recording new music. [Gigwise] Neil Young thinks he is qualified to save the auto industry. [Lincvolt] Paul Simon dropped by 'The Colbert Report' for an int
I am pleased to welcome Mark Peter Hughes to my blog. I read Mark's book, I am the Wallpaper, earlier this year. It's a coming-of-age story where the voice is spot on and I knew I wanted to interview the author. Here is my review of I am the Wallpaper.I am the Wallpaper, is Mark's first published book. It was a New York Public Library’s 2006 Best Book for the Teen Age, a Booksense Summer Pick, and a finalist in the Delacorte Press Young Adult Novel Competition.Mark Peter Hughes’ second novel

I am shocked that we are already in the 2nd week of November and that Turkey Day is right around the corner. Yes, my dear friends, the holiday season is approaching us at the speed of light and the weather around here is being just as crazy as always! It snowed a very, very little bit two weeks ago for about an hour– nothing substantial enough to stick to the ground, even though it did cause Ohio drivers to be a little extra crazy so it seems. Last week, the weather was sticking around in the
For some people November 12th is just an ordinary day… but it happens to be the birthday of someone near and dear to my heart. My grandmother turned 80 years old today. Her name is Norma which means rule. She was born and raised in Louisiana to a family of share croppers. My grandmother has 7 siblings, 7 children, 14 grand children, and 18 great grand children. She always says “God Brought Us A Mighty Long Way.” My grandmother grew up as she puts it “on the rough side of the mountain duri
Shopping at Kesey's. In this famous 2001 photograph, Zane Kesey, son of author Ken Kesey, watches as his father's casket is loaded onto the bus "Furthur" for the final ride. Since his father's death Zane has been sifting through the Prankster Archives in search of things to offer for the entertainment and enlightenment of the public. Yesterday he sent me an email signed "Never get off the bus" reminding me of what a good place the Kesey website can be for those special holiday gifts. Here's
With apologies to John Lennon:I was dreaming of euro cashAnd my heart was beating fastI began to lose controlI began to lose control...Currency crises are endemic to developing countries like predictions of capitalism's imminent demise are to Marxists. At this time, many former Soviet satellites are now running gaping current account deficits, making them especially vulnerable to the credit crunch. Ukraine and Hungary has already been crunched, and others in the region appear to be in a precario
As most of you have probably noticed, George Bush is nowhere to be seen for fundraising for the GOP candidates. He's been thrown under the bus and of course he should have been. That's great, you reap what you sow. Bush and friends have been the worst representatives in modern history. Fighting the Iraq war for years after it was nationally unpopular. But is he the only one that deserves this treatment? I seem to remember a strong Republican House and Senate that pushed through Bush's agenda- an
Financial Times AND The Economist Endorse Obama Obama also had three Rolling Stone covers in seven months, a record matched only by John Lennon. Both of them were more popular than Christ. McCain has been hand-picking people for rallies, another resemblance to Bush. Even those who have already voted for him may be kicked out if they have the wrong "look." McCain had to bus students in and still had 1/4 of Obama's crowd in Florida. 59% of pollees don't think Palin is qualified. A McCain st
Send your suggestions, comments, questions, stories, pictures, and video to Jenny at jennyfansofdavid@gmail.com. Happy Archuween! Favorite quote of the week (from the 108 seconds video): “When I was a kid I always liked to be Dracula for some reason. I was really into Dracula. Not blood or anything. It’s not like I was into blood or anything. Well, like, the fake blood, but it’s not–I don’t–I didn’t…never mind. I like Dracula.” Hmmm…what would David Archuleta look like as Dracula? Well, here
I went to the second hand clothing store to get myself a mask to wear for Halloween last night. Now, I have never dressed up before, but I’ve been told that I shoud because of all the good that dressing up does, like trick people into thinking you are in the Halloween spirit, leading to all kinds of wild and crazy adventures. When you don’t dress up, people just look at you like you’re some kind of asshole who think he’s too cool for the shit and girls tend to avoid you because they thing you
