When I’m in the mood to dance, the B-52’s always come to mind. Especially their dance floor classic “Love Shack.” The remix versions are always big fun at parties or clubs.
The B-52’s are back on record after sixteen years with their first album of the 21st century. “Funplex” features eleven new songs [...]
Mainstream Rock: Bryan Adams, “Run to You” (1984) Darren Robbins: This song was the exact turning point for Adams. Up until then, his music has a certain us-against-them quality. While “Run To You” is not a bad song per se, it and the entirety of Reckless (the album on which it appears) is much too polished for my taste. I like to think that if time travel really were possible, the first thing I’d do is travel back in time and tell Bryan Adams 1984 that I have two songs I’d like to play
Yeah I know… the most you think you know about The B-52s is that song that won’t get out of your head: Loveshack. That’s why we were surprised but intrigued when we heard The B-52s were performing along with indie disco demons (and hipster DFA-record darlings) Hercules And Love Affair, at Hammerstein Ballroom the day after Halloween. We figured it was an ironic match worth checking out. Plus the post-Halloween date appealed to some of the more wildly attired drag queens in town (as did the gorg
mary-kate and ashley olsen's new coffee table book Influence has gotten great reviews and i can't wait to get my hands on a copy. the book is comprised of twenty interviews mary-kate and ashley held with the designers and artists who have influenced them the most over the past ten years, artistically and intellectually. (ie, some of te world's most prominent and interesting designers and artists). They interviewed Karl Lagerfeld, Christian Louboutin, John Galliano, Peter Beard, Alex
Musical legend Bette Midler hosted her 13th Annual New York Restoration Project’s Hulaween Gala at the Waldorf Astoria on Friday night. The place was filled with celebrities in their Halloween finery, including: Kathy Griffin, Pink aka Alecia Moore, Gloria Estefan, Crystal Stewart, Stevi Perry, basketball great Kareem Abdul, chef and dining critic Andrew Zimmern, Gloria Gaynor and money expert Suze Orman. B-52 musician’s Fred Schneider and Kate Pierson turned out for the event as did fashio
Let me just start this off by saying I’m not really an Olsen fan. I think they have cute and unique styles but I’m nowhere near as obsessed with them as most fashionistas seem to be. Because I’m not a big fan of theirs, when I heard about their new book Influence a few months ago, I was hesitant at first. What could these girls possibly have to say in a book? I read up on the book online though, and when I found out it was all interviews with fashion designers, artists, photographers, and m
Editors and readers and neighbors and party stars are all rattling my cage today, wondering why I haven't collated the Ultimate Halloween Playlist: 2008 Edition. My reason, dear friends, is as universal as life and death: I got hit with a fish this morning, and it freaked me out. But alas, I can't deny pleasure to my peeps, so click on that link right below, and get your Halloween hopping just right. Special thanks to the dozens of loyal Pop Lifers -- especially Bassnote and KJW -- who unloade
Didn’t anyone ever tell you that knitting pays off? Big time. Photos by Sarah Slater. When Miss Pussycat glided by with a pom-pom on her head, I have never wanted to flick anything so desperately in my whole life. A pom-pom is a manifestation of sheer glee, constructed from yarn and a cardboard skeleton. I would have asked permission for a good flick (an impromptu one would be uncouth), but just as I had mustered the courage, the lady stepped up to the stage. As was the routine, Quintron an
In this weekend’s rather admiring New York Times profile of NYU’s (sort of) hometown heroes Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, writer Ginia Bellafante concludes that Ashley O. has her sights set on Fortune magazine rather than Vogue. The girls are doubtlessly darlings of the discerning fashion and art world—with a successful, high-end clothing line, The Row, under their tiny belts, and pals like Karl Lagerfeld—as well as members of exclusive, Beatrice-frequenting social sets. And so it struck the wri
The colder months are upon us, inspiring more time spent indoors by the fire or huddled in bed under a down comforter. But before the many fall holidays invade the calendar-- often signaling a hectic schedule of cross-country travel and obligatory family gatherings-- it may be the ideal moment to take some personal time for yourself or with a loved one, away from the daily stresses of home. While many might only think of traveling south of the Equator for warmer, tropical weather, some U.S. hot
Earl Parker is the legendary former editor and head writer on Big Brother magazine. In his earliest and most desperate days on the job in 1992, Jeff Tremaine was not only his boss but his sole benefactor. Every morning, Jeff would walk into the one room magazine office that doubled as Earl’s bedroom and toss him a package of pink Hostess snowballs and a bottle of Cherry Bomb blue drink for breakfast. It is still debated to this day whether or not this forced diet had an adverse affect upon Ea
ABC News’ Kate Snow and Imtiyaz Delawala Report: Governor Sarah Palin took the McCain-Palin campaign into Sen. Joe Biden’s back yard, pulling out all the stops at a rally in Scranton, Pennsylvania today in a clear effort to excite McCain-Palin supporters and get them talking to friends and neighbors. Biden had joined Sen. Hillary Clinton and former President Bill Clinton at precisely the same venue on Sunday. Scranton is Biden’s hometown and Sen. Clinton has roots there as well. Just before
I was informed earlier today that I made some special list. Twice. That's pretty exciting! One problem. In reviewing recent entries, I've determined that the "dad" component of "dadblog" is notably lacking. There's stuff about McCain and Jiffy Lube and zombies and such, but not a lot of touchingly funny anecdotes about fatherhood. As of late, the daddy stuff has been kept to a minumum, because like all dads I believe that I'm batting .500 in the Good Dad Department. Good if you're a baseball
previous awards season back and forth, we talked about the opening moments of awards race. Topics for the first installment included a look at what we'd learned from the film festivals, and speculation about some of the season's frontrunners and dark horse contenders. EH: Let's brainstorm a few other indies that could use a Gotham's boost: "Wendy and Lucy"? "Che"? "Elegy"? PK: Maybe "Ballast" or "Momma's Man"? Obviously these aren't going to play into more mainstream races, but they seem like
It's definitely old news by now, but I just recently had the pleasure of spending one night at Kate Pierson's very own motel, Lazy Meadow, nestled comfortably in the vast Catskill Mountain region. Though it may not have been the most traditional of honeymoon spots, the experience and the motel were so very unique that it deserves mention on these pages. Anyone familiar with Pierson and her quirky, kitschy post-punk turned pop outfit the B-52s should know what to expect from the singer's motel.

Congratulations, world! You somehow made it all the way to Oct. 1, 2008, which means one thing: It's time for Rocktober to start. How will you celebrate? Some people are linking to YouTubes of Who songs. Others are hoping that you'll have a hankering to hear the Divinyls and Foreigner within the same span of time. One guy who got the coveted domain name "rocktober.com" is even saying that we should bring back Metallica Monday, although I know of a few people who might disagree with that idea. W
I'm currently working with a sinus infection. The antibiotics have kicked in, so let's see how long I can last.1. Kanye West claims on his blog that he's been using the vocoder ever since The College Dropout, and has no plans to stop anytime soon, regardless of how over the vocal effect has been for, say, the past year. That would mean that "Through The Wire" might be the only Kanye song that wasn't recorded with a vocoder, and that may only be due to the fact that his fucking jaw was wired shut
More fresh news about Nottingham, after Russel Crowe and Sienna Miller, Christian Bale will also join the project but nobody knows if he will play Robin Hood or King Richard… Which one would you prefer ? For better or for worse, my generation as chosen to associate The B-52s more closely with “Love Shack” than with any other their greater songs, Peter Griffin’s acoustic cover of “Rock Lobster” notwithstanding. It would make sense, then, that a person from my generation — namely me — would see a major similarity between “Love Shack” and “Funplex” — this week’s song and the debut single from the band’s first album in sixteen years. That similarity: When you think about it, a “love shack” isn’t real
Top Ten 4 My blog hits have drastically gone up in the last few days. I owe this to paying better attention and actually giving a damn what is on my blog and posting at least semi regularly. But I also owe a lot to ten people. Well, 9, since number one is actually my old blog…but nine people who link to me and send me the most traffic out of any of the sites I link back to. Those ten people are Pixie, Bonnie, Prefectdt, Niki Flynn, Miss Chris, David Pierson and the crew at Spreview, Michell
