The CD is on their independent record label called Earthsign Records, and the album of all original compositions was recorded at Cricket Studios, [...]
Brad Barr's slippery guitar by Peter Margasak at 6:40 p.m. I'm sure I must’ve listened to the Boston trio the Slip sometime in the late 90s, but my patience for jam bands is nil, and by the time I received the recent solo debut from Slip guitarist Brad Barr, The Fall Apartment: Instrumental Guitar (Tompkins Square), I'd forgotten what they sounded like. The Fall Apartment is so good, however, that I felt compelled to give his main band another shot. (His piece “Bubba’s Bounce” previously ap

Robbie Basho released Venus in Cancer in 1969 on the Blue Thumb label. After five albums for the Takoma label in the 60's, Basho had cemented his reputation alongside John Fahey and Leo Kottke as one of the most brilliant guitarists of his generation. His wide range of musical influences from around the globe set him apart from other blues-based players, incorporating Arabic, Himalayan and Indian themes, Japanese and Chinese scales, and classical and European folk music. All are on magnificent

Welcome to the Land of Pleasant Living, and the forty-third edition of the Carnival of Maryland. As always, this carnival isn't about a topic, or a way of life, or a philosophy; it's a collection of posts written by a diverse group of bloggers whose commonality is where we live. Before we get to the good stuff, a quick plug: October is Bloggers Challenge Month at Donors Choose, a charity that lets the donors choose where their money goes; if you've a mind to, check out my giving page and show a

"During the summer the oriole's song is easy to hear, but the birds themselves stick to the cover of the trees. In the fall, the trees provide less of that, and oriole nests, unmistakeable, can be seen." And Swam

Paul Siebel wrote this song, and many other gems. He had a short career as a singer songwriter and recorded two albums in 1970 and 1971 and then disappeared. In addition to Leo, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Jerry Jeff Walker, Kate Wolf, Mary McCaslin, Emmylou Harris and Waylon Jennings have recorded Paul’s songs. What happened to Paul is that he had a bout with depression and tried to self medicate in various ways. Eventually, though Paul was rescued by the mysterious one armed folk music fa

The first bit of news I heard this morning, eavesdropped over a pile of corn at the farmer’s market, was that Paul Newman had died. I can’t decide which surprises me more: that Paul Newman has died or that he was 83 years old. He is perpetually etched in my mind as permanently middle aged. I remember being seated near him at a now defunct Chinese restaurant in New York once when I was probably 7 or 8 years old one Christmas when we were going to see The Nutcracker at Lincoln Center. He and
The acoustic guitar is a popular instrument amongst all age groups and is a very rewarding instrument to learn to play even though you do not get to fool around with cool electric guitar sounds. So let us take a look at the techniques you will learn as an acoustic guitar player and some legendary guitarists whose work will need to become familiar with in order to hang out with other acoustic guitar players. You can think of acoustic guitar technique in two ways: you can be a strummer or a pic
We interrupt my obsession with books other people write and the collection of words I call my work in progress for this plea from Democracy in Action. This is actually the second such petition I've received in so many days about the debate scheduled to take place tomorrow (Friday). Regardless of which candidate you support and in particular, for those who are undecided, the Presidential debates are a long-standing part of our democratic process and I urge everyone to watch them. The debates ar
