The kids in my tiny uberliberal prep school loved The Lemonheads before they were cool, and as more than just local heroes — the band had been formed in the same hallowed halls, and the oldest of our peers could still remember their presence among us. The music was perfectly adolescent, too: raw and visceral, full of feedback and fuzzy guitars; it wasn’t much more ragged than our own amateur output, and it came complete with frontman Evan Dando, who presented a grungy kind of everyteen cha

Marvel’s got a new slate of online-first digital comic books being launched on December 17. The second wave of these books, it’s Marvel’s effort to get out ahead of the curve for digital distribution of mainstream comics product. Their Digital Comics Unlimited program, with all its limitations, is really the only game in town as far as most mainstream fans are concerned since neither DC nor Image has anything like it. The thing that’s most interesting to me is that the books themselves still s
A TRUE STORY, although the name has been changed. This is obviously, essentially, a Lou Reed song -- I styled it after "Stephanie Says," but the lyrics and melody are all mine. "DANNY SAYS" LYRICS: Danny says Over a burger and chips Sometimes just looking down Hollywood It's like the apocalypse And Danny says That on Yucca and Vine He saw a man with a full-sized cross Beneath the Hollywood sign Danny says This is the month he goes broke He's spent his entire trust fund On rent, clothes, and c
Law firm marketing and business development professionals have been politely getting after Kevin McKeown, our VP of Client Development, for an updated report on large law's use of blogs. Innovators, such as Gloria Fox at Blank Rome, are looking for hard data for their law firm's management that their competition has effectively addressed any liability and ROI concerns, and made the move to blogging for reputation enhancement and client development. The last eight months shows no slow down in t
Page Six runs into the intersection of cool, culture, community and caring for kids: ‘TIS the season, and what kid rocker wouldn’t dream of playing Lou Reed’s electric blue Strat? Reed, who will discuss his legendary album and film “Berlin” Saturday at the 92nd Street Y’s new TriBeCa venue, has loaned the arts-and-culture center four guitars and amps, including one covered in snakeskin. Teens enrolled at the Y’s Guitar Institute will get to use the Dirty Boulevardier’s gear (most of which dates
MGM’s remake of the film Fame school faculty members have been casted with Debbie Allen, Charles S. Dutton, Kelsey Grammer, Megan Mullally and Bebe Neuwirth. Production begins Wednesday, with Kevin Tancharoen directing the film set for release September 25, 2009. Like the original 1980 film, the remake focuses on the dancers, singers, actors and artists from auditions to graduation at the New York City High School of Performing Arts. Variety reported the following casting of Mullally, who in
Contrary to popular belief, not every blog that feeds my RSS reader is dedicated to baseball card collecting. A few discuss the actual sport of baseball, several explore the Zen of fantasy baseball and some are related to the art of baseball photography. If you must know, I also follow a handful of non-baseball blogs including those related to the Albuquerque music scene (so I’ll be sure to not miss Lou Reed’s next visit), select historical and archaeological blogs, and one maintained by a frien
People have been telling Elvis Costello that he should host his own show for many years now it seems, but it took the last one, Elton John, for it to finally stick. Premiering this Wednesday on Sundance is Spectacle: Elvis Costello With..., a talk show with music as both it's subject and it's highlight. The first guest, fittingly enough, is Elton John, who performs double duty here as executive producer of the show, and who's mostly responsible for Costello taking on the project. Spectacle is l
– “Criterion’s Blu-ray of [Wong Kar-wai’s] Chungking Express is a revelation. It should thrill cinephiles and tech wonks in equal measure… Pretty much every frame of the film is packed with vivid, contrasting colors, and one of the strengths of the high-def version is how fixed and solid the colors are… Film grain, a bedbug of certain high-def advocates, is spectacularly intact… Indeed, Chungking Express is one of those films that thoroughly vindicates something film preservationist Robert
During an interview with Elton John for the debut of his new Sundance Channel show “Spectacle,” Elvis Costello didn’t ask about stage costumes, boyfriends or “Island Girl.” Instead, the conversation turned to Laura Nyro, Leon Russell and David Ackles. The two men closed the show, which airs Wednesday at 9 p.m., performing the obscure singer-songwriter Ackles’ “Down River.” “For all of (Elton John’s) successes, people don’t realize that he’s a great fan of music,” Costello told The Associat
(with apologies to Lou Reed) Lately I’ve been thinking an awful lot about the Internet and the way it has mediated my personal and professional interactions around sexuality over the past bunch of years. I have about four draft versions of a post that’s similar to this one hanging out in the back end of my blog. Most of them don’t make a whole lot of sense. I’ve been revisiting Naked on the Internet a lot recently as I approach the two year anniversary of the book’s completion. And I’ve been
mollylambert: Angry old men? Not angry? Smilin’ Lou Reed? I’m really looking forward to his new show.
Lou Reed - Transformer (1972) [Japan Mini LP 2006 Remaster] * * * * 1 votos Included in Q Magazine’s “100 Greatest Albums Ever” Ranked #55 in NME’s list of the `Greatest Albums Of All Time.’ After a tepid solo debut, Lou Reed’s post-Velvet Underground standing looked dicey. Fortunately, David Bowie and his guitarist Mick Ronson stepped in to help Reed craft one of the best albums of his career. TRANSFORMER built on the stripped-down, … Full Descriptionquirky pop of LOADED-era VU, infusi
The new music-minded talk show, "Spectacle" Elvis Costello With..." won't premiere on Sundance Channel until Wednesday. But already it's had an effect in the recording world. His session with Jenny Lewis ended up with him in the studio on a track on her new album "Acid Tongue" and brought him into his own studio to perform a quickie album "Momofuko" (on which Lewis also appears). Charlie Haden was on an episode of the new show featuring Bill Clinton and heard Costello sing Hank Williams "Y

I’m almost a month behind the crew over at Danger Here on this one ( How Andy Lost Friends ) but then I never was one for deadlines, was I ? We have learned recently, via the gossiping aul wans of Irish soccer journalism, that the ‘rumoured bust-up’ between Giovanni Trappatoni and a rather portly wide-midfielder from Crumlin centred around the latter’s being up too late with an acoustic guitar after the victory over Georgia earlier in the autumn. This revelation came to me shortly after I h
God damn you, cable, why can’t I afford you?! Oh, right, I don’t work. Anyway, this Wednesday on the Sundance Channel is the debut of “Spectacle: Elvis Costello With…,” and then they fill in the blank with notables like Lou Reed, Tony Bennet, Rufus Wainwright and even Bill Clinton. Costello is incredibly funny, smart and completely adept at this sort of thing, as anyone who has seen him host Letterman back in 2003 or his appearances on The Simpsons and other stuff can attest.
