Just a heads up that in the very near future I'll be doing two things: 1. Answering this question from Dan: Here's a (hopefully) interesting question for you: say you're starting a small theatre company, with 7 people (say, 4 actors, a director and 2 designers). Do you follow the AD/MD model and divide whatever meager salary money you have by 2, or do you encourage everyone to take an equal share of the work and give everyone a nominal 1/7 share? Thanks Dan for giving me an excuse to share
I'm keeping a list again for my reference, and I hope that I can provide some reading suggestions for others. I love hearing what my blog friends are reading, and many of my choices come from book lists and reviews by the folks on my blogroll. Please feel free to leave a comment about what you're reading. From one strange musical contraption to another: the Drawdio is a simple electronics kit that turns a standard 2B pencil into a screeching, wailing instrument. The Daily Record By Rick Fulton Robert Carlyle has told Doctor Who bosses:"Come and get me." The actor is one of the favourites to take over from fellow Scot David Tennant, who will quit as the Time Lord at the end of next year. Doctor Who writer Russell T Davies has spelled out exactly what he's after: "Anyone playing him has to be capable of anything - action, heartbreak, comedy, wielding a sonic screwdriver..." Given the 47-year-old father of three's versatile career, he more than fits
A vigorous hand wash or shower could cause a person to be less judgmental. A new study, set for publication in the December issue of the journal Psychological Science, reveals that when a person feels physically clean, he or she cuts others more moral slack. The findings add to past research that has shown a link between physical warmth and generosity as well as physical chill and social isolation. Other past research has shown that sins seem to nudge people to clean themselves, a phenomenon
Our friends Howard Lindzon (an AdaptiveBlue investor) and Soren Macbeth recently launched StockTwits. StockTwits is an “open, community-powered investment idea and information service” built on top of Twitter. The service aggregates messages on Twitter about specific stocks and organizes them into a coherent conversation. I’ve had fun watching Howard and Soren execute on this beautiful idea. I’m happy to announce that StockTwits has integrated AB Meta into their site and that Glue will now ap
Does Washing Your Hands Make You Less Judgmental? Defense lawyers take note: Be sure to have some Purell to offer the jury before they deliver the verdict—their clean hands could help your case. New research in Psychological Science [pdf] suggests that outer cleanliness can loosen people’s moral judgment. While many of us may have experienced the “Macbeth effect,” in which people feel the need to purify themselves after a sinful act, researchers now find that people who had first scrubbed t

As promised, here is the annual comparison of just what the NBR has meant to Oscar over the past few years. First off, the winner of the NBR’s Best Pic has gone on to be nominated every year for the past eight years. You have to go back to Quills to find one that didn’t. And even with the occasional film that doesn’t land in the top five their track record is pretty darned good. A Best Pic chart after the jump. [Quote:] It was like a scene from Hamish MacBeth. Police launched a full-scale drugs raid on a Highland home - but discovered only the 79-year-old owner’s tomato plants. Uniformed officers burst into Lulu Matheson’s house in the village of Shieldaig, Wester Ross, kept her son Gus in his bedroom for two hours, handcuffed her grandson Stephen, and turned the house upside down. The high-profile afternoon raid involved three squad cars, seven officers and sniffer dogs. They told the family they
Suburban Living Science Report #1: Bacon on the gas grill. Our humble suburban Deck House (factory-built in Acton, Massachusetts for the last 50 years or so… until a couple of weeks ago when the company sent all of the workers home) contained a very functional electric range back in 1968. At that time it was acceptable for a suburban family to drive around in a car and simmer a sauce by pressing the “simmer” setting on the stove. Along with the SUV, however, the modern suburban family needs

The following is something I’d realistically be better off not sharing with the world but I am compelled to publish online anyway. Shakespare’s Macbeth finds an archrival in the form of Macduff, and it’s likely no coincidence that the two have very similar names. They’re actually similar people, in some ways, but with significant differences. In modern texts — and perhaps in older ones as well, depending on how the transcriber decided he wanted to spell — this relationship is underscored by the
I was lucky enough to go to the VITTA (Victorian Information Technology Teachers Association) conference this week, and one of the sessions I attended was Jen Cole's session on Comic Life. This is one of the things I want to learn so that I can use it in my classes next year as an option for the students to represent their knowledge in English. I was quite keen to see that there was an option to use a Graphic Novel template. I had used a graphic novel this year in my Year 11 class's study of Mac
Theatre/theater superstitions again! I’ve covered this before in a few posts - theatre superstitions, ballet superstitions, even an interview of a WAAPA professor on theater superstitions - but I came across my old recordings of the BBC comedy show starring Rowan Atkinson in Blackadder recently and discovered that YouTube have gone widescreen on their site. On my way back south, I called in to a couple of GBG pubs by Glasgow Central Station. One, the Toby Jug is an old favourite. I used to work for another pub in the same group when it was owned by Eadie Cairns, who then owned Auchentoshan Distillery and a few pubs too. Goodness knows who owns it now. Or the distillery for that matter. It has sold cask as long as I can remember, though there may have been gaps I don't know about. Three beers on offer - the ubiquitous Landlord and two from Arran Br
by Melissa Malloy Two years ago I did the scariest thing I have ever done in my life. I pursued my dreams! I decided to move away from my family and friends in Colorado and come to Washington to follow my acting dreams. I closed my eyes and jumped not knowing if there was going to be a net to catch me. My net was Burien Little Theater. I have been an actress for as long as I can remember. I see pictures of me as a child, and you can tell I was a ham. My mom always said I could be in th
