THE BEST OF 2008: METALLICA, AC/DC OR GUNS N’ ROSES?

THE BEST OF 2008: METALLICA, AC/DC OR GUNS N’ ROSES? Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008 at 5:14pm by Vince Neilstein 2008 was a pretty big year for so-called “legacy” rock and metal releases. Metallica, AC/DC and Guns N’ Roses — arguably three of the biggest rock/metal acts of all time — all released new albums to varying fanfare. So now that you’ve had some time to brew on how these records stack up against the bands’ older material and against each other… which is your favorite? Vote, then weigh

CBB Music: Chinese Democracy Album Review

So far there have been two kinds of reviews for Guns N’ Roses new album Chinese Democracy: sarcastic and positive.  Believe me, I breathe sarcasm but it has no place in a music review if it is not backed up by facts or additional insight.  Of course there is a wealth of humor in the fact that Axl Rose’s new opus has been fourteen years in the making, but spare me the lame, sad music reviewer jokes.  We’ve heard the one-liners before and most likely with a better delivery than coming from a sna

Fsshion Rock Night: Rocawear vs. Ve'cel

During Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin an exiting battle takes place: Jay-Z vs. Chester Bennington - Rocawear vs. Ve’cel at FASHION ROCK NIGHT. On January 31st 2009 - for the second FASHION ROCK NIGHT, Jay-Z’s Rocawear fashion label and Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington’s Ve’cel will compete for the fashion crown at West Coast Customs in Berlin. Metallica Talks Guns n Roses

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich recently sat down for an interview with Blender magazine. In the interview, he talks about the days he spent on the road with Guns n Roses. When he was asked about the craziest thing he saw on the road, the rocker replied “Axl’s a friend, and I don’t want to compromise that. But as for “fun” crazy: He wrote his (half) brother, Stuart, a $25,000 check every day to throw these lavish theme parties. It was like, we’re in Indianapolis, so there were Formula One cars

Leon of logical fallacy (not of QC) fame

I’m not a regular reader of the blog in question, not by any stroke of the imagination and I don’t believe I’ve mentioned it here before. A chap going by the nom-de-plume of Leon Bertrand (ahem) QC, has been doing the rounds of the blogosphere for a while now, and for the most part, I’ve been ignoring him. He turns up on the occasional comment thread here and there, and occasionally is the butt of jokes at GrodsCorp and Random Brainwave (often on the grounds of amusing, but ultimately trivial ty

Bite Your Tongue: Roadie Rage, and How to Avoid It

Other cyclists can be annoying. Take the cyclist I shared the bridge to Manhattan with this morning. As I ascended, I was overtaken by a rider on a color-coordinated track bike which was as free from dirt as it was from brakes. He passed me handily and I thought nothing of it, thinking that was the last I'd see of him.But then came the descent, and the drawbridge-being-raised sound of reverse torque on a fixed-gear drivetrain. There's a sharp right hand turn at the bottom of the bridge on the Ma

NEW LAMB OF GOD! IN TERRIBLE QUALITY! WHOO-HOO!

NEW LAMB OF GOD! IN TERRIBLE QUALITY! WHOO-HOO! Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008 at 7:24am by Axl Rosenberg Lamb of God debuted a new song, “Overhauled,” while opening for Metallica earlier this week, and, natch, some fans caught the whole affair on his or her cameras (see below). The quality is so bad that I can’t really say much about the song, but I think it sounds cool. I guess we’ll find out for sure when the band’s new album, Wrath, is released on February 24. ANYWAY, sure is funny to see

The Folkier Side of Evan Dando: Covers of Whitney Houston, Big Star, Metallica and more

The kids in my tiny uberliberal prep school loved The Lemonheads before they were cool, and as more than just local heroes — the band had been formed in the same hallowed halls, and the oldest of our peers could still remember their presence among us. The music was perfectly adolescent, too: raw and visceral, full of feedback and fuzzy guitars; it wasn’t much more ragged than our own amateur output, and it came complete with frontman Evan Dando, who presented a grungy kind of everyteen cha

DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN make studio plans, might be taking requests?

After having spent the past 10 years making us all wait 3 or 4 years between studio albums, The Dillinger Escape Plan have announced that they're hitting the studio this summer, before any of us finished scraping our brains off the floor from hearing Ire Works. In a blog post the size of some [...]

Lars Ulrich Enjoys "Bonding" With "Friends" In Bathroom Stalls

Oh the regret he will have for saying something so foolish in the age of Lars Ulrich-bashing…or maybe not. Via the Chicago Tribune, he talked to Blender Magazine about his days of cocaine use and drinking. Here is what he said about cocaine and one of the things he missed about using the booger sugar: “The bonding,” he tells Blender magazine. “Two guys in a bathroom stall—it feels like the most important place in the whole world in that moment. I’ve actually gone into bathroom stalls with fri

Yer Mam!'s Top 100 Tunes Of 2008: 100-91

It's time... Has it really been a year? I, for one, have been enjoying myself far too much to notice a whole twelve months passing before my eyes, I don't know about you. This year's ton of tunes was hell of difficult to whittle down. In fact, I think I could have easily stretched it to 200. Maybe next year. Anyway, 2008 has been characterised by a lot of cracking one-off singles, great songs from not-so-great albums and fantastic songs from fantastic albums. I suppose you could say that about
