Sorry we haven’t been blogging much here as of late. Heads down and (clearly) hard at work in Topspin-land. A few random notes to share: Digital Media Forum West was this week and I was on a panel with The Usual Suspects (TM) moderated by Ted Cohen giving a “digital state of the union”. Thanks very much to Ted for inviting us and for giving me the floor for a minute to share an overview of Topspin. I have to admit, I felt we were doing a bit of fiddling while Rome was burning. The dis

While the real lesson of the networked world for music is that (as Herdmeister would say) music is something we do together, MySpace is taking advantage of the monkey-see monkey-do (in this case monkey-hear, monkey-do) reality of the flocking activity of real human behaviour.(Thanks to Jamie Burke for sharing this link).MySpace has launched MySpace Music which effectively turns audio files of your favourite music into a Facebook newsfeed-style shared experience with your social graph (your MySpa

I have started a new collaboration with the Reed-Midem organization. Reed Midem runs the annual MIDEM convention, conferrence and tradeshow; this event is probably the biggest and most established music industry gathering worldwide, and will run from January 17-21, 2009, in Cannes / France. MidemNet is the digital music & technology part of MIDEM and is now pretty much the key event as far as the conferences are concerned (at least from my point of view). I have been going to MIDEM for so
I'm proud to have been asked to join the Visionary Chair Committee that guides what has become the world's premier meeting of the music and technology communities, MidemNet. The other members of the committee are the true visionaries, but my hope is that my experience running booking agency Skyline Music, helping our clients navigate today's tricky landscape and the research and writing of Hypebot have given me a unique perspective that will add to the conversation. I'm also counting on the
iTunes’ New Genius Engine: A Threat To Filters? By Robert Andrews - Wed 10 Sep 2008 11:48 PM PST Apple’s (NSDQ: AAPL) addition of a music recommendation engine to iTunes this week will have brought a nervous gulp from those already in that space. One such, Peter Gabriel-backed TheFilter, saw fit to issue a press release last night, designed to differentiate its nascent offering from that of Steve Jobs. CEO David Maher-Roberts said he “genuinely welcomes” iTunes’ new Genius feature as valida
«Pierre Akendengué is one of African music's great visionaries —a onetime protest singer turned composer turned cult favorite turned cultural minister, Akendengué has always marched to the beat of his own drummer. Born in 1943 in Aouta, Gabon, Akendengué left Gabon at the age of 22 to pursue an Education in France. There he settled in Orléans (and later, Paris), where he took a degree in psychology and sought treatment for his poor eyesight. It was during his student days that he first became in
We7 Gets EMI Tracks, Ad-Funded Download Expectations Not Met By Robert Andrews - Tue 02 Sep 2008 02:12 AM PST We7, the Peter Gabriel-backed music site that offers free tracks by grafting audio ads to the start of songs, has got a license from EMI Music - but not for what was once the core part of the service. Instead, the 400,000 EMI songs - including those from its famous investor - can be used for on-demand, standard ad-funded web streaming and paid-for MP3 downloads. Though its launch
We’ve come across this video of U2 manager Paul McGuinness offering his thoughts on digital music at Midem earlier this year. He called it, “The Online Bonanza: Who is making the money and why aren’t they sharing it?” In this he had some tough things to say against, well, almost everybody - and predicted Apple’s move [...]
APPARENTLY the Heritage Committee of the House of Commons has scheduled an emergency meeting for 1pm today to take up the issue of the over 40 million dollars in Arts Funding cuts being dropped by the Conservative government. It might be worth a moment of your time to flood them with an email or two before then. Be passionate but calm. Speak of economic impact, and remind them that the arts employs over 600 000 people in this country, and is a multi billion dollar industry. And if you happen to
Following a carefully managed and some might say malicious spin on the federal government’s plan to wind down the $4.7 million PromArt export development program for arts and culture, the Globe & Mail reports this morning that the Harper government is intent on silencing Canada’s artistic voices abroad. Ebenezer Harper’s latest stabbing victim is the highly [...]
Peter Gabriel doesn't want to take a Sledgehammer to the music business. The veteran artist says in this insightful NYT profile: "I don't believe in the death of the major record companies. But as an artist, I'd love to see them reinvented as service companies." Gabriel's been doing his bit in that regard for a decade, having founded white-label music retailer OD2 in 1999, since when he's also invested in recommendation engine The Filter and ad-supported free track provider We7. On that last

Some 2.3 million people skanked Radiohead's latest album from BitTorrent sources during the two months it was legally available for free. A research paper from P2P monitor Big Champagne and the UK's MCPS-PRS royalty collector said the "staggering" number "far exceeds what outsiders have reported as the estimated download total from the bands official website, regardless of whether those downloaders paid or not". Why? Maybe so many people are already downloading the rest of their albums from
