Mike Smith, lead vocalist for The Dave Clark Five, just recently passed away on February 28th. Not only did he sing lead, but he also played piano and organ for the group, and co-wrote a lot of the band’s hits. The DC5 gave The Beatles their first competition on the hit charts in [...]

I had an email from [IMG [info]]markhammonds last night, informing me that scaffolding had gone up around part of the old Marton Sixth Form College, and that the bulldozers were reving up to tear it to bits. The building in question housed The Common Room, and for this reason I'm feeling a little sad. If my late adolescence manifested itself anywhere it was in the common room of Marton Sixth Form College - it was here, after leaving the horrors of Bertram Ramsey Secondary School, that I first e

This arrived from NFL Network today. In anticipation of Dallas and Pittsburgh renewing their historic rivalry this Sunday, when Tony Romo and the Cowboys visit Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers, NFL Network will air Super Bowl XIII as a part of NFL Classic Games Friday, December 5 at 8 p.m. In the first Super Bowl re-match ever, Super Bowl XIII matched Super Bowl X opponents Pittsburgh and Dallas at the Orange Bowl on January 21, 1979. Quarterback Terry Bradshaw threw a record four touchd
HTML clipboard A few rambling thoughts in advance of tonight's home game against the Grizzlies. Memphis comes to town tonight, and they presumably will begin the game with Mike Conley, Jr running the point. You may remember Conley as the guy many Hawks fans clamored for before the 2007 NBA Draft. In fact, I just did a little search through the ole' BasketBlog Archives, and found this post, which I wrote on draft night. Check out the comments, if you are looking to have a good laugh. Of cour
Georgia: First and foremost, I want to commend Jim Martin for running a strong campaign in deep red Georgia. Anyone analyzing the Georgia Senate race should not lose sight of the fact that Georgia is arguably the most Republican-shifting state in the entire country over the last decade. Steve Benen lays it out well: Republicans needed a runoff to keep a Senate seat they expected to win easily, in a reliably "red" state, and it's evidence of a party with the wind at its back. Of course it is.
Kurt of SEC Hoops: The Good, The Bad, The Dirty is the RTC correspondent for the Southeastern Conference. The misery continues for the Southeastern Conference. Only one unbeaten remains after MSU, South Carolina and Tennessee dropped games, with only LSU keeping their heads above water. The Wildcats from Kentucky met a couple of high-profile-conference foes and matched up well, while Mississippi State dropped two close ones in their matchups against power-conference squads. As a whole, the confe
The World’s Most Prestigious Power Poll: Week 14 By Spence | December 3, 2008 There is only a month left in the regular season and the playoff scenarios are flying fast and furious. Only The World’s Most Prestigious Power Poll can make sense of it all. Lucky for you, it’s here. 01. New York Giants [11-1]: Wide receiver celebrates his team’s decisive win over a division rival by shooting himself in the leg. Only in the Big Apple, baby! [NC] 02. Tennessee Titans [11-1]: Has any 11-1 team e
A list I’ve been meaning to get around to is finally updated. I was mainly waiting for the expansion draft to conclude last week and for my vacation to be over as well before I got into this long list of player moves. As some of you already know I try to track these moves to the best of my abilities here during the offseason. From week-to-week (and soon to be a day-to-day thing) I will post this list with the updated moves that each club has made. So far a lot of the moves center around the e
Starting Saturday, Rivet presents Stuff This, their second annual plush group show. This exhibit will feature over 30 artist from around the world, many of whom had work in the recent Monster Art Rally show. We’re increasingly taking note of plush art at ToyCyte, and artists like Anna Chambers, Cuddly Rigor Mortis, Curster, Lana Crooks, Monster Factory, My Paper Crane, Sebastian Curadeau, Shawnimals and The Soreheads should be familiar to our regular readers. The other names on the flier are
Teams deciding to whom they offer arbitration was the kindling for this winter’s Hot Stove, and already the dominoes are falling. Since 24 players were offered arbitration on Monday, teams have been racing to sign free agents and make deals — and the winter meetings are still a week away. The first free agents to sign are the lesser ones — particularly, the nondescript middle relievers (Doug Brocail), guys on the comeback trail (Mike Hampton), and the non-roster guys with spring training inv
I was fortunate last night to attend a matchup between the University of Tennessee and George Washington University in Washington, DC. The gym was almost full, and within the last five minutes of the game, everyone was on their feet. Prior to the game, I had received a Facebook invite from a friend for an event titled, “Tennessee is coming…” started by some faithful GWU women’s basketball fans. The message read, “Hey guys, The lady Vols have been spotted, along with over 1,000 fans. It’s time
Following a phenomenal month of November that saw them pick up 24 of a possible 26 points, the Boston Bruins are set to embark on their December schedule. Unlike last month, the majority of the season's third month will be played away from the TD Banknorth Garden. The first of those games takes place Thursday night, as the B's travel south to face the Tampa Bay Lightning. When it comes to records, the Tampa Bay Lightning are about as weird of a team as you'll find in the National Hockey League
Mangini's tips for the Jet Set December 3, 2008 The Jets returned to work today, preparing for their third West Coast trip - Sunday in San Francisco, against the 49ers (4-8). The Jets lost their first two trips to California (San Diego and Oakland), so, naturally, the whole jet-lag thing will be an issue this week. Once again, they will leave on Friday, one day earlier than a typical road trip, in an attempt to acclimate to the three-hour time difference. So far, East Coast teams are 6-3 in
Permalink | Comments (0) Monday, December 1, 2008, 8:54 AM Covering the Bears coverage: Print Rahula Strohl at 8:55 a.m. It's not easy to find a column in Monday's papers that is about anything other than five consecutive plays from 6 minutes, 13 seconds remaining in the first half to 4:48. Kyle Orton threw the ball away on a play-action pass that yielded no open receivers, then the Bears called a timeout. Apparently, the discussion on the sideline went something like this: "
Today the W3C announced the publication of the OWL 2 Last Call Documents—-11 in total!—-which begins the period of open, public comment, during which anyone can make comments and file questions about the documents that specify OWL 2, the first major revision of the W3C’s Web Ontology Language. I encourage Pellet users and other OWL users to review the documents, one or several of them, and provide feedback to the WG so that OWL 2 can move to recommendation status as soon as possible. The Buckeyes, having ended their season at least a full two weeks before the rest of the world, find themselves in a good position to play in the Fiesta Bowl, and probably against an opponent from the Big 12. Let’s take a look back at the last time the Buckeyes played a Big 12 opponent in the desert – the 2004 Fiesta Bowl, against Kansas State. The Wildcats Kansas State University is located in Manhattan, Kansas, which is only slightly more populated and exciting than any given Siberian to
Jump to Comments (Philadelphia, Pa) — Week 13 of the 2008 NFL season is behind us and despite the weather is starting to become cold in most NFL cities, there is plenty of action heating up as we move toward the playoffs. In another wacky week of play, the NFL did not disappoint delivering statement wins, upsets, and a stuffed turkey or two or three in this week’s case The week started early with three NFL Thanksgiving games that were symbolic of the holiday as there was three turkey stuffings.
one of my heroes walked from this earth into the eternal this past monday morning. Pa took his last breath at 9:25am after a long hard battle with bone cancer. He was a hardworking man who loved his family. He was rough around the edges, but had the biggest heart. He was a man of many emotions, and few expressions. He loved his grandkids & great grandkids. He helped teach us how to be men, and what it means to be a husband that does everything he can to provide for his family. This Last
