Rick Springfield’s new album ‘Venus In Overdrive’ really rocks hard. It’s his first collection of original songs in four years. The first single off the album is “What’s Victoria’s Secret?” which is also the first performance video. The song has that “Jessie’s Girl” vibe with all the typical hooks and double-tracked vocals [...]
From the Washington Post (Dec. 2, 2008): 50 Years in a Wheelchair: No Time for Pity An Invalid? That's Not My Stance. By Gary Presley This month I began my 50th year of riding a wheelchair through life. In case you're wondering, everything is all right down here. That's what I found myself thinking recently as I sailed through a shopping mall. "Look, Mikey! It's magic!" a tiny girl exclaimed to an even tinier boy as she spotted me. It was a reminder that most of the creatu
A few weeks back I ran a friend's review of "Religulous" that pointed out Bill Maher's double-standard for Christian evangelicals and Jews. A man who just saw the film--"Rand Meko"--found that review online, and sent me the following note:I felt cheated by Religulous. I thought a number of groups not only got off free, but there was a very distinct melding of specific politics and religion - something Bill Maher seemed to be vehemently against. I appreciated you opening up the discussion. It s
That was Lord Drayson's closing remark at a packed event where a broad cross-section of people from universities, business, government and the 'connected' generation came together to listen to a precis of our discussion paper 'Attacking the recession' and also from Lord Drayson, Minister of State for Science and Innovation. There were echoes from various speakers and contributions from the floor on the need for government and wider society to accept risk and learn and make decisions quickly if
Matt Cronin previews 2009 for the ladies: Jelena Jankovic: Let's begin with the positives: Jankovic became the first Serbian in history to end the year at No. 1 and really went hard after the top ranking following Wimbledon. Even though she frequently complains about nagging injuries, she shows up week after week and punches the time clock, mostly with a positive attitude. She is by no means a standout No. 1, but she's a terrific defensive player who can capably mix in high-octane offense. Jan
“There’s a generation of kids being born today and probably already alive who I’m pretty confident will never buy a physical media product. They will never buy a DVD, they will never buy a CD, and they will never buy a game in a box.” (Phil Harrison, Atari, talks to EDGE) Exactly. Read more
The music and fashion have long provided people with important means of self-expression. A new company called i/denti/tee, conceived and launched by non-traditional-agency-like-object Anomoly, aims to aims to monetize the space where music and fashion meet. I like their model, which sits at the intersection of three key trends -- mass customization, crowdsourcing and eco/social consciousness -- to produce a unique line of music t-shirts that are ready-made for the 'net generation. I know

The long-anticipated launch of NASA's Mars Science Laboratory has been delayed by two years until the fall of 2011. NASA officials told a news conference on Thursday that the scheduled October 2009 launch date is no longer is feasible because of testing and hardware issues that must be resolved to ensure mission success. The window for a 2009 launch end
I just had an interesting briefing on the Mobile Internet Device (MID) outlook that is driving Intel's strategy for their Ultra Mobility Group. Intel is certainly enjoying the explosion in sales of the Atom processor that have come with the current netbook craze. They are expecting netbooks to continue to be the hot sellers next year. Intel is the one firm that has promoted the concept of the MID long before we began seeing any of these little computers. They took great pains to explain th
December 3, 2008 By: Dr. Felipe Korzenny Having spent over 30 years in Hispanic marketing, I have been fortunate to see the evolution of this fascinating market. I founded one of the first multicultural market research companies, Hispanic and Asian Marketing Communication Research, and experienced first hand the explosive growth of a market and an industry. Now, as the Founder and Director of Florida State University’s Center for Hispanic Marketing Communication, I am training the next generat
or monstrous I whose wind blows long grass, who! whoot! jungle not Amazonian swamp, but thick green leafage surrounds, hear everything, no one knows how these massive rectangular structures were used, now birds screech in the little rooms of the buildings, fly away, long iguanas run under rock, tiny bright green and red lizards run down paths past one tiny statue, on lowish ground, on a small concrete block, two funny-monkey- hideous- dog-jaguar faces and p
Dan Drezner politely suggests I'm talking (or writing, rather) through my hat in this gloomy assessment of the transformational potential of the Obama presidency. Dan prefers to see the potential rather than the pitfalls. And he may be correct. It would probably be better for all if he were. As it happens, I do think he's right to argue that many european policy elites - and certainly much of the think tank world - do believe that Afghanistan must and can be saved. And it is certainly possibl
Gregg Fraley was my guest yesterday on my BlogTalk Radio show. You can listen to the show at this link. Gregg has a site, a blog, a great book titled Jack's Notebook, a new enterprise looking for 1000 partners (with no cash investment required). Besides his expertise in innovation and creative problem-solving, I found gregg to be humble, smart, talented, appreciative, gracious, alert/aware, curious, generous. How generous? Well, his book, Jack's Notebook, can save you a few thousands of dol
POWER-GEN International announced that it drew a record-breaking 16,500 attendees during the show's opening day Tuesday at the Orange County Convention Center. In its 20th year, POWER-GEN bills itself as the largest power generation event in the world. The conference addresses business and technical issues in the power industry. On Wednesday, the show's owner, Oklahoma-based PennWell Corp. projected a total attendance of about 19,000 by the event's close today. That would be an increase of
I like to make this blog about positive things, but once in a while I'll divert. I think today is one of those days. Revolutionary Love is stirring something in me. I am so amazed to see hundreds of people give away so self-lessly. Love that! There is a growing distaste...dislike...revulsion (yeah) inside me toward consumer Christianity. I think it's there because God is still beating the remains of consumer Christianity out of me. It's easy to build a church on being cool or by promising
Followup to: The Weak Inside View Saith Robin: It is easy, way too easy, to generate new mechanisms, accounts, theories, and abstractions. To see if such things are useful, we need to vet them, and that is easiest "nearby", where we know a lot. When we want to deal with or understand things "far", where we know little, we have little choice other than to rely on mechanisms, theories, and concepts that have worked well near. Far is just the wrong place to try new things. Well... I understan
