Paul Thorn

Man, this dude is awesome! I bought Paul Thorn’s latest album on iTunes, mainly for the one song, “It’s a Great Day to Whup Somebody’s Ass.” I had no idea he was from Mississippi until I got the CD.

Boyd 2008 Conference Dec 6-7 Making sense of "Interesting Times" The Agenda

When we proposed making the theme of the conference Local Resiliency in the Context of a decaying Nation State, who could have imagined that by the time we arrived, that we might be living this? We have a great agenda and an amazing group of attendees. Here is the Agenda An Expanding Context Until recently, Boyd’s ideas and devotees lived mainly in the military. This conference is designed to expand the Boydian universe to the rest of society. For the challenges that Boyd and his successor

Live-blogging the Network of Michigan Educators Conference, III

Mike Schmidt of Ford Motor Company’s plenary session. Mike—who was here last year and is back by popular demand—begins by telling us that we’re not in an information economy, in spite of the fact that we’ve heard that roughly 6000 times. We’re in a Conceptual Economy, an idea so complex we don’t even know what to call it. He reminds us that he works for the auto industry— he knows whereof he speaks. Five trends (you know there had to be trends): ·        Innovation (seeing what customers hav

3 Measely Feet! Is That to Much to Ask For From Motorists?

Cars, SUV's, RV's, Busses, and Trucks, OH, MY!! No matter how safe a cyclist you are, no matter how properly you share the road with the 4 to 18-Wheeler Majority, the problem of how close, is too close, is a daily concern to Recreational Cyclists, and Bike Commuters, alike. The US states with "3 Foot Laws" are: Florida, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Oregon, Illinois, Tennessee, Minnesota, Utah, Wisconsin, Arizona, South Carolina, Washington, Oklahoma, and Maine...other states aren't far behi

Clearly Christmas

Card making has always been one of my passions.  Using clear elements makes them that much more special.  And they are really easy to incorporate!  Designing cards with clear element is all about conceal and reveal.  For example, I designed these two hybrid cards to be used for giving a gift card.     So here comes trouble.  But this is a good trouble to have.  You see there is just enough area on the card front that is OPAQUE (covered with paper) that you cannot see the contents inside.  S

On Page 75, The End Has Arrived!

When government prosecutors get their copy of the motion for a new trial in Sen. Ted Stevens’ case this week, the printed document will be slightly heavier than first anticipated. U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan yesterday granted Stevens’ defense lawyers more space to file the motion—up to 75 pages. Local rules say motions—and response briefs—cannot exceed 45 pages without court approval. “The trial in this case took an entire month and gave rise to numerous legal disputes, including motio

Displays of the Future: 3D (and it's not that expensive)

games:iZ3D: "In the latter part of last year, you may recall that a 22-inch version emerged for $999, and now that 3D is all the rage, it's making a second push to clear out all that dusty inventory by lowering the price in dramatic fashion. As of this month, the MSRP on the switchable 3D / 2D display is just $399, and that includes three pairs of passive linear polarized glasses, all the power and video cables you need and gratis membership in the firm's "upcoming 3D gaming league." T-shirt start-up i/denti/fies a new fashion model

The music and fashion have long provided people with important means of self-expression.  A new company called i/denti/tee, conceived and launched by non-traditional-agency-like-object Anomoly, aims to aims to monetize the space where music and fashion meet.  I like their model, which sits at the intersection of three key trends -- mass customization, crowdsourcing and eco/social consciousness -- to produce a unique line of music t-shirts that are ready-made for the 'net generation.  I know

A Talk With George

What a great song to have floating my head this morning. Thanks for writing this one, Jonathan! There's a tall thin man standing in the shadows When he calls your name his voice is strong and clear It's a dark and smoky place, so you can't quite see his face He pulls you close and whispers in your ear And he tells you he was born into some money But it didn't mean he had to sit around And he knows a thing or two about the things that you should do If you don't want to take life lying down Fir

NASA Delays Mars Probe

NASA is dumping plans for next year’s launch an ambitious science probe to the surface of Mars to search for signs of life. The new plan, outlined during a press conference on Thursday, is to fly in 2011, the next time Earth and Mars are favorably positioned. “If we could delay the launch for a few months we would, but launch opportunities don’t allow that,” said NASA chief Michael Griffin. The problem revolves around motors in a system being designed to lower the Mars Science Laboratory

Sharing Our Task

Mere Comments has been difficult (but still enjoyable!) to maintain, and we've hung in there through this fall and I plan to continue it, with help, going forward in 2009. A number of the Touchstone editors will be gathering in Chicago in mid-January to discuss and make plans for the magazine, as we normally have done annually or semi-annually as schedules (and funds) permit. Mere Comments will be on the agenda. The times dictate that we strive all the more diligently to emphasize the unchan

My Phone's in my Pocket and I Don't Want Your Hand There!

Below is an interesting post about how users interact with their phone. The key message is pretty simple. If you want to advertise to mobile users, you have to engage them on their terms. People are leaving email behind to use social networks and services such as Twitter for their messaging needs. It's easier to avoid spam and advertising there (for now I guess!) Further, these users see their mobile as the first truly "personal, mass media". Hence, they want to control the experience, and righ

Counting Down to Angels

"Living vicariously through you" is something you guys often chirp to me. Except I never know why people would want to live vicariously through a hair-brained, Monster Munch-muncher with fat fingers. Still, if you insist, the vicarious living continues on Saturday as the Angels Sale is finally upon us and the online press has gone loopy and I'll be doing some reportage... I did say there would be a Style Bubble reader meet up at the sale but plans have changed slightly and I will be there

The Sacred Realm of the Forest Elf!

Deep in the ancient woods of Finland, Lea Turto covered tree stumps in red felt as a way to examine the spiritual meaning of the forest and her own deep rooted Finnish culture.   Hiisi is a Finnish word, originally meaning a sacred grove. Hiisi was thought of as atemple: people gathered there to celebrate with food and to sacrifice to the forest gods. Hiisi was also a gateway to the past and a connection with the dead. It was an intermediate space between two worlds, and the Tree of Life

Dark Matters

Incidentally, this is the kind of crap I think about a lot of the time, which is why a lot of the time if someone were to ask "What are you thinking about?", I'd have to make something up real quick or risk sounding like a loon. Anyway, I'm driving to work this morning and I'm thinking about the fairly new scientific concept called Dark Matter. Now, I'm something a couple of notches below "ignorant layman" on the subject, but here is what I understand without visiting Wikipedia; The classic d

Molly's Classical ST Forum Letter Game

Every once in a while, the ST Forum must come up with classics . . . or rather classical bootlicking. The Classical ST Forum Letter has a few characteristics: 1. It is pro-establishment. Though nowadays it might concede that the establishment isn't perfect (but the point is really that the establishment is not perfect, but it's the best nevertheless). 2. (a) It contains logical fallacies, especially fallacies that many Singaporeans would accept as facts thanks to a world-class propaganda syste

Daily Star: How to cross road for £15k

A COUNCIL has been slammed for spending £15,000 of taxpayers' cash on a DVD telling adults how to cross a road. The seven-minute film warns pedestrians to avoid using their mobile phones and to unplug their MP3 players. It also advises them to "use all their senses and be sure to make eye contact with drivers when trying to move through the traffic". Kent County Council produced 6,000 copies of the DVD, which is being given away free, relating to a section of the ring road in Ashford. It ha

Obama and Europe, Cont.

Dan Drezner politely suggests I'm talking (or writing, rather) through my hat in this gloomy assessment of the transformational potential of the Obama presidency. Dan prefers to see the potential rather than the pitfalls. And he may be correct. It would probably be better for all if he were. As it happens, I do think he's right to argue that many european policy elites - and certainly much of the think tank world - do believe that Afghanistan must and can be saved. And it is certainly possibl

17 Annie Nominations for Kung Fu Panda; 8 for WALL-E

The Animation World's "Annie" Awards are coming up, and the nominations are in for the best in animated entertainment for 2008. The summer delight Kung-Fu Panda pulled in 17 nods, including best feature. Happy to see that Bolt took home nine, and WALL-E, the almost certain "best animated feature" Oscar winner from Pixar, claimed eight. The other best picture nominees? $9.99 and Waltzes with Bashir. The upcoming The Tale of Despereaux and the hits Horton Hears a Who and Madagascar Escape 2 Afr
