I always liked the band Heart, not only because Ann and Nancy Wilson were both great vocalists, but also because they liked Led Zeppelin, and used those influences in their own music. My favorite Heart album is Dog & Butterfly because of the song “Mistral Wind,” which conjures up shades of Zeppelin from Physical [...]

[UPDATED]Recently I was looking through Granta’s Best of Young American Novelists 2 and noticing a lot of MFA graduates represented. Although it is frequently discussed on this blog, I don’t believe there has been any raking of fiction alumni outside of The Atlantic’s short list. I know that this is a tricky area to measure, but it feels like an important factor for applicants. So I decided to augment Granta’s list to see which programs were producing acclaimed writers and also to give future ap

This post is mostly for my brother and sisters but the rest of you will learn a little about the woman who raised your Grandma Asay. She was left a widow with 3 young daughters and then her sister died and so she took her children too. My Grandma Wilson was from Scotland and kept her Scottish Brogue til the end. She definitely would have qualified for assistance but she was not a lazy woman and made her own way. One of her later money makers was to lease and run the Clark Hot

Lush Life Share Post Print November 29, 2008 Posted by Scott at 5:01 AM Today is the anniversary of the birth of Billy Strayhorn, the compositional and arranging genius behind many of Duke Ellington's best-known songs, such as "Take the A Train," "C-Jam Blues," and "Satin Doll." Strayhorn is said to have written both the music and lyrics to "Lush Life" as a teenager, yet it is a remarkable song whose sadness, glamor, excess and dissipation he seems to have lived out: I used to visit al

This man was the queer movement's Barack Obama. His watchword was “Come out, come out, wherever you are,” and he used tactics those who recently watched Barack Obama’s campaign would easily recognize: register voters, get out the vote, organize relentlessly, empower your volunteers and supporters, and spread a message of hope. Update This quote is from a beautiful article by Christie Keith over on 365gay.com. I don't just recommend it, I consider it essential reading for any progressive.
Enter to win one of two autographed copies of Shift by Jennifer Bradbury (Atheneum, 2008). From the promotional copy: "When Chris Collins and Winston Coggans take off on a post-graduation cross-country bike trek, Chris's hopes are high. He's looking forward to seeing the country, dodging a dull summer at a minimum wage job, and having one final adventure with his oldest friend. The journey from Hurricane, West Virginia to the coast of Washington state delivers all those things...and more."So muc

27.11.08 “So when you see standing in the holy place ‘the abomination that causes desolation,’ spoken of through the prophet Daniel - let the reader understand.” This Scripture is referring to Daniel 9:27, “He will confirm a covenant with many for one ’seven.’ In the middle of the ’seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on a wing [of the temple] he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him.” In 167 B.C., a Greek r
Jeff is traveling, so we are republishing his recent interview from the Kirk Report, one of our featured sources. The Kirk Report is an excellent investor resource, with many specific stock ideas for members. Charles Kirk also reads very widely and provides regular links to articles we might otherwise have missed. He came up with some excellent questions for the interview, getting Jeff to discuss many topics he has not covered on "A Dash." Here is the Kirk Report inverview: It is with

Everybody loves a good movie, especially when the film is about music, making music or being in a band. This just makes the whole viewing experience all the more exciting. Though some of these band flicks tend to trivialize the creative process, or even the entire industry, some of them actually end up being pretty mediocre to okay. What’s more is that sometimes the songs that these fictional characters write up are also half decent. Keep in mind, however, that the songs do not actually exist.
IT HAS BEEN A LONG TIME since the first Christmas carol. Six centuries, by most reckonings — the world “carol” is a Middle English word describing a sort of round dance, and its origin puts us squarely in the Middle Ages. Any scholar of the period can tell you — well, not much, as our Medieval forebears left precious few records behind. Literacy was limited almost entirely to the Church, and so what documents exist from the era tend to deal with sacred subjects. The profane experience of the Da

Media & Politics 25-Nov-08 Permanent link to MTA daily media news Normally I would say “So what?” (by myiq2xu at The Confluence) From Politico: “OBAMA SKIPS CHURCH, HEADS TO GYM”… Now I don’t really care if Barack Obama attends a church, temple, mosque or gym every weekend. But he’s the one who made a big deal over his religious faith… It’s the hypocrisy, stupid! He doesn’t need the South Side black churches any more. He’s made it. He can forget them. Obama the Secret Progressive (b
WellAboveAverage.com is a not a huge Bond fan. Me, I love watching them over and over. ( I have seen every Bond at least 5 times and some of them I have seen easily a dozen.) We both agree that Daniel Craig adds something to the mix - particularly in Casino Royale-- that was missing in the other Bond flicks. What's interesting is that while watching Quantum of Solace, I saw scant little of that "something" but I did see a lot of action-- and very little of the girly girls that are typical of mo
