I don't have to handicap the LVC boys basketball season. It's not in my contract. The world would go on if I didn't predict how the 12 teams will finish this year. But I know that the most read things in our newspaper are rankings and predictions. People can't wait to clip these things and then roar with delight if they prove to be wrong. Northampton fans never let me forget that I picked them to finish last in their division last season. They kind of used that selection as a rallying cry w
Who could have believed that by Christmas 2008 the int'l community would still turn a blind eye to Israel’s persecution of Christians & Muslims?By Stuart Littlewood – LondonPosted by Atheo NewsChristian hotels in the Holy Land as well as Catholic and Anglican churches in the UK face Christmas without Bethlehem wine as Israeli soldiers at the checkpoint at Hebron are refusing to allow lorries carrying the wine to enter Israel. The wine is made by a Roman Catholic religious order, the Salesians of
Today was our last in the Galilee region, and man it was packed. It’s 7:00 pm and I’m ready to go to sleep. Here’s some highlights…. We started the day heading out on a boat on the Sea of Galilee. When we reached the center of the lake we read the Scriptures of Jesus calming the sea and walking on it. We had a great time of worship and even ended up dancing to some jewish music. Being on the sea of Galilee is one of my favorite sites in Israel, and the whole group agreed this was a special tim

Hans Urs von Balthasar on "women priests" and the example of the Blessed Mother (see my previous post), taken from New Elucidations (Ignatius Press, 1986) and available from Communio in PDF format (thanks, Emily!):Over against the old world, whose balance is so endangered, the Church is the beginning of the new cosmos founded in Jesus Christ. In that new cosmos, from its very foundation, the right balance, including a sexual balance, is assured. It is only a matter of recognizing it and living
Note from the editor: Edger columnist Chris Ray is on unpaid leave this month pending the results of an investigation into allegations of defamation of religion. His columns for December will be written by guest contributer Rev. Thor M’Glarven Krandok, high priest of the Dark Dungeons Coven in Sasquatutcha, Maine. What has become of our beloved Yuletide, my friends and fellows? By the Gods and Lesser Demons, I say, I didn’t spend three years completing an online correspondence course in geoman

Last year I posted about one of my favorite Advent quotes: This passage from A Right to be Merry has always inspired me during Advent. I love the naming of the Advent candles in the wreath, marking the journey through time with prominent figures of our Advent Liturgy: Isaiah, St. John the Baptist, St. Joseph, and the Blessed Virgin Mary. In Advent, we gather each Sunday evening in the community room under the big green wreath that swings above our heads on long purple ribbons. There are fo
The Advent Mini-Retreat continues... Hail, space for the uncontained God From the Agathistos Hymn, Greece VIc In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, "Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you." Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this
Click the post title to be taken to the source. An Uncomfortable Christmas Card for Unbelievers Comfortable at Christmas Each year at this time, I think about how I would like to remind my unbelieving friends and loved ones of the glorious gospel and hope found in Jesus Christ. Seasons like Christmas give us another great opportunity to make the good news of Jesus known to the whole world, and especially to those closest to us. Sadly however, when Christmas comes and we gather with our unbe
Congrats to our friend, Ken Stanek, and all the hearty souls who made the 10th Annual Cranksgiving charity alley cat race in New York City the best one yet. 106 racers succeeded in raising and donating more than $1000 in food to Saint Mary's soup kitchen on the Lower East Side, as well as over 200 jars of baby food for two Women & Children's charities (Nazareth Housing & Hudson Guild). If that wasn't enough, $1682.40 was raised for City Harvest and $420.60 was raised for the New
As told by the Library of Congress: On the evening of December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks, an African American, was arrested for disobeying an Alabama law requiring black passengers to relinquish seats to white passengers when the bus was full. Blacks also were required to sit at the back of the bus. Her arrest sparked a 381-day boycott of the Montgomery bus system and led to a 1956 Supreme Court decision banning segregation on public transportation. Rosa McCauley was born on February 4, 1913, in T
Does this guy look familiar? It’s none other than Mario Andretti, in a coach-bodied Modified that he raced in 1962 for Frank J. Tanzosh. The photo, especially the Acme Markets sign in the background, indicates that this image was snapped in the pit area of the half-mile dirt oval, Nazareth Raceway, in Mario’s adopted Pennsylvania hometown. This is the car in which Mario became a true professional, i.e. driving for somebody else. The Tanzoshes, father Frank and son Billy, fielded very potent M
Or do you think you don’t need to know how the Money Power came to be our masters using puppet presidents? More reassuring to them than their control of nuclear and biological weapons or weaponized clandestine weather modification or asymmetrical monetary and credit warfare and monopoly power is there security in you not knowing that they exist and are steering events. This short history of their key actions in the 19th and early 20th centuries deprives them of that defense. This is the st
People are smelling blood all over Ottawa. Unfortunately some of those people are Conservatives. A website has - mysteriously - sprung up trying to start a draft Jim Prentice campaign: Why are we promoting Jim Prentice for Conservative Leader while Stephen Harper is still PM? We don't mean to be disloyal to the present leader or government -- but we believe the next leader, whenever he may be needed, should be Jim Prentice. That was posted Friday. The coalition crisis erupted on Thursday aft
Last week I got a letter from an adult adoptee, who reminded me how important bloodlines were in the Old Testament -- of the long lists of genealogies that may be found in the Scriptures. He did this to support the idea that natural family ties are more important than adoptive ones. However, as we enter the holy season of Advent, we are reminded that God’s redemptive plan involved adoption from the very start: the Incarnate Christ, the Son of God, was adopted by Joseph, the husband of Christ’s bi
[NOTE: Reposted from last year.]Here's The Huck Upchuck's Top 10 Christmas Movies of all time:10. Nestor, the Long-Eared Christmas Donkey -- This may not be on par with some of the better full-length feature films that treat Christmas, but I have always adored this little 22 minute Bass/Rankin animated Christmas story. I guess it's thematically of a piece with the classic "Little Drummer Boy" Bass/Rankin animated short, but I like it better because it's not as well known and gives the animals o
Advent Calendar In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth Luke 1:26
The question comes up every time there's an attack by terrorists who say they're acting in the name of Islam. "If all the other Muslims are so peaceful, why don't they condemn these attacks." As I've pointed out before: They do. But it doesn't generally get much play. I was off last week (I hope your TG was a good one) during the main -- and horrible -- religion news from Mumbai. Amidst the hundreds of other terrible stories, that the killers managed to target what may have been the only conc
Points to ponder: An Islam columnist on Jews By: Dr Farrukh Saleem. The writer is an Islamabad-based freelance columnist Why are Jews so powerful? There are only 14 million Jews in the world; seven million in the Americas , five million in Asia, two million in Europe and 100,000 in Africa . For every single Jew in the world there are 100 Muslims. Yet, Jews are more than a hundred times more powerful than all the Muslims put together. Ever wondered why? Jesus of Nazareth was Jewish.
