Isaac Hayes 1942 - 2008

August 11th, 2008
By Mike

Sixty-five year old music legend Isaac Hayes died Sunday. Of course, I remember Isaac Hayes for his baritone vocals and funky rhythms on his classic hit soundtrack for “Shaft.” He really set the theme for generations of funk and soul musicians with that groundbreaking album. ‘Black Moses’ was also released in 1971, [...]

Tom Dowd & the Language of Music

April 11th, 2008
By Mike

This DVD is a fascinating look behind the board, inside the studio, and into the heart and soul of the music we all know and love. Again I have to say, if you’re really into collecting music, this is a historical document and a must have for any fan of classic rock, R&B [...]

"Upscale Pizza" Opens Softly On Sunset Hill

Picolinos, a lovey-looking pizzeria located in one of the few subsets of Ballard that isn't built out to high heaven, staged a soft, invite-only opening last night. Meanwhile, I enjoyed a pre-Stars pepperoni, mushroom, sausage, and olive pie in the Rainier Valley at Vince's Cocktail Lounge, which features a fine selection of Otis Redding on the jukebox and Moretti on draft. The grub there is on par with Pazzo's, which is absolutely delicious.

The Weekly Check In With Michelle Blade

(Part of The Weekly Check In series) Michelle Blade makes very magical paintings (yup, that’s the best way to describe them.) She lives in San Francisco and I’m glad I get to see her now that I live here. You can see her work at http://michelleblade.com. RR: What are you currently working on or just finished that you’re excited about? Blade: I just made some killer pasta with a bunch of random stuff thrown together. Pear and goat cheese ravioli with olive oil and parmesan, sweet potatoes,

Planning a Halloween Party...Grown Up Style

Last year I hosted a Halloween Party, just for adults, and I must say I enjoyed it more than almost any other party I've ever thrown. It was so unexpected to turn a holiday, typically targeted towards children, into something for us grown ups to enjoy as well. I want to share with you a few ideas right now (versus on Halloween or the Eve of), just in case you decide to host your own get-together. It's not too late to start planning! Invitations...a great way to set the tone for the party: I fo

Random 10 for October 10, 2008

1. The National, “Fake Empire.” This band should have sold about 10 million copies of last year’s Boxer. Here’s hoping that world domination begins shortly. 2. A Girl Called Eddy, “The Long Goodbye.” 3. Amy Winehouse, “Know You Now.” 4. Ghostface Killah, “Beauty Jackson.”  5. Santogold, “Creator.” This is why everyone thought Santi White was just a Mayawannabe. Thankfully, she proved us wrong. 6. The Pipettes, “One Night Stand.” 7. Os Mutantes, “Ave, Lucifer.” 8. Otis Redding, “Res

LaMontagne embraces the 'Grain'

No less an authority than Lucinda Williams has given her seal of approval to the power of Ray LaMontagne's voice. The gifted Maine singer-songwriter made an appearance during Williams's set Wednesday night at the Orpheum Theatre and reportedly bowled over the crowd as well as his duet partner, who compared him favorably to Otis Redding.

The B List: Top 10 Fender Guitarists

Once again it’s time for a special guest to take the reigns of the B List. This week, guitar-maker Andrew Olson of AO Guitars shares a list of his favorite Fender players. AO Guitars makes high-quality instruments for the discerning musician… Hey everybody! I can’t say how thrilled I am to be back on the B List for a second edition of AO’s Top 10. If you recall the last one, I delved into my Top 10 Axes of all time, where I mentioned that I could have done an entire list on just Fenders and n

sweet soul queen

Nobody (except maybe Roy Orbison) knows crying like Irma Thomas. If you wanted, you could make a mixtape exclusively of songs she's recorded that are about crying or tears - Cry On, In Between Tears, Cry Cry Cry, Hold Me While I Cry. And, you know, it would still make me happier than most bubblegum pop. Okay, Aretha has a bigger voice, and Otis Redding is more enjoyably melodramatic, but for my money Irma is the soul singer I want with me when the chips are down. Her songs are heartfelt, but al

Review: Nikka Costa

Photo by Bill Brownlee/Special to The Star It was unclear who had more fun Wednesday night at the Record Bar, Nikka Costa and her band or the audience of about 200. Great soul music is joyous and liberating. Accordingly, there was no shortage of smiles and uninhibited dancing both on and off the stage of the intimate Westport club during Costa's 80-minute performance. In the five or six years since Costa last performed in Kansas City, several other artists -- Sharon Jones, Joss Stone and A

A Southern Soul Story CD from Kent

We couldn’t let this southern soul release pass without mention, so good is the material on offer. Take Me to the River: a Southern Soul Story 1961-1977 is a 3CD set from Kent that chronicles the golden era of southern soul. With 75 tracks on offer, from the likes of Joe Simon, James Carr, Otis Redding, William Bell, and Joe Tex, and featuring songs recorded in studios such as Broadway, Royal, Stax, and Muscle Shoals, it shows off the astounding quality of the music made in this tradition of A

Stax 67 Astoria gig: were you there?

In early 1967 the Stax/Volt Live Revue toured Europe, stopping at the Finsbury Park Astoria on March 17th. Were you there? If so Radio 2 would like your help. As Gemma Newby explains, Radio 2 are making a series called Wish You Were There?, 'taking musicians back to a gig in history they would have loved to have been at. With stories from fans, journalists, producers and house staff who were present on that night we'll build a picture of what it would have been like to have witnessed a concert

Otis Redding: Live In London And Paris CD Review

One of the most incendiary live albums in music history, 1967's Otis In Europe documented the master's rise to fame on a London stage in March 1967. But just...

Are You Looking To Convert Your Old Movies To DVD Format?

Are You Looking To Convert Your Old Movies To DVD Format? Another amazing attribute to this sort of technology is that you can actually add your favorite music to play along with the movie. For example, if the film was made back in the Otis Redding days you can have his music playing in the background or any other music you like for that matter. ¶ Posted 09 October 2008 † Kristi Ambrose § Movies ‡ Comments (0) ° Tagged: 8mm Film Converse, 8mm Film to DVD, 8mm Film Transfer, Convert 8mm Film

Anthony Miller - Oct 11,2008

Anthony Miller is a young artist who floats around through many genres. As a child, the halls of his home echoed with the sounds of the great thought provoking music of the past. Artists such as Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, and Stevie Wonder, to name a few, formed a strong base for a future musician, painter, poet, sketch artist, and writer. Being born around the same time as Hip-Hop has enabled him to witness the evolution the new voice of the unheard. This mixture of visual, vocal, and physical

Five things to do today - Oct 8

Stories like this one about Highland Park parents who are mad about their underage-imbibing kids getting in trouble with the cops aren’t that uncommon. So much so that I’m wondering when the Trib will start doing stories on the dangers of parental irresponsibility that rival the three-alarm warning bells it sounded when it ran those teen driving stories a while back. It’s only fair, right? Here are five things to do today: COMEDY - TJ & Dave Two-man improv in this town typically means on

The Time of Our Lives: Who Needs Power?

All photos—unless otherwise noted—by the lovely Sam of Samantha Warren Weddings. As we headed up from the beach after our on the rocks photo session, I had the faintest hope that maybe our power would be miraculously back on. It wasn’t. But there was nothing else to do but join our now electricity-free wedding reception. Hey- at least we were being green! (non-pro photo by CM) I was told that because of the lack of a microphone, our guests would be told to hold off on clapping as our bridal

Best Cover Songs

The passing of Isaac Hayes started us thinking about cover songs, the tunes made popular, or not, by someone other than the original artists. In 1969, Hayes, known more for the theme from Shaft, made what would become a classic R&B cover of Glenn Campbell’s country ballad, “By the Time I Get to Phoenix.” Hayes’ remake came in at a little over 18 minutes. Incidentally, Hayes also wrote “Soul Man,” the Sam and Dave hit that was covered by Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi as the Blues Brothers.

day tripper ticket #65

Originally released in December, 1965. A riff so strong neither Jimi Hendrix or Otis Redding could resist it. With the Beatles there was seldom such a thing as a b-side. BBC Radio 1 playlists determined "We Can Work It Out" should be the one to incite commuters on the run up to the inevitable Christmas office party and a thousand boozy fumbles next the franking machine. Who can argue ? After their gruelling visit to Shea Stadium in August, things could only get more interesting in the studio
