TuneGlue

July 13th, 2008
By Mike

I recently found a new music website called TuneGlue. The site is described as a Relationship Explorer. Hmm, interesting.
A little click and drag action brings up various applets for discography, news, artists websites and most importantly, relationships. That’s the one that really makes this site tick, because relationships shows the who’s who of each band and their influences. This is something of interest that we’ve talked about before, like a family history of classic rock.
However, it still has some glitches we’d like to see worked out. Exploring Relationships for Eric Clapton didn’t show anything for Steve Winwood after Blind Faith. And Releases only shows a partial listing of albums. TuneGlue didn’t even list the first few Beatle albums, which is a huge oversight as far as I’m concerned. Releases for Paul McCartney also shows a Japanese cover of Michelle, not at all a part of Macca’s discography.
But we really like the concept of TuneGlue, and will be checking it again for updates and upgrades. It’s associated with LastFM.com.

Happy Birthday Paul McCartney

June 18th, 2008
By Mike

One of my favorite artists is 66 years old as of today. Composer, singer, songwriter, musician, MBE, former Beatle and Wing Sir James Paul McCartney.
Born June 18th, 1942, he is listed in Guinness World Records as the most successful musician and composer in popular music history. No doubt with 60 gold records and sales of 100 million singles. Plus he’s got the most covered song in history “Yesterday,” which was his first “solo” record with The Beatles.

By Mike

The James Hyman Gallery and Paul McCartney have announced a new exhibition of photographs by Linda McCartney. It’s her first major photo exhibition in the UK, and a labor of love from the McCartney family, mainly Paul and daughter Mary.
Here’s a YouTube video of Paul speaking about the photos, many never seen before.

Beatles autographs fetch $59K in auction

April 17th, 2008
By Mike

$59,750.00 was the winning bid for this very famous set of autographs from all four of The Beatles, during their visit with Elvis on August 27th, 1965.
The auction was held on April 5th at Heritage Auction Galleries in Dallas. I was talking to my friend at FansOnTheRun about what a big deal it is for Beatle fans, so we decided to verify the story.
It took some searching, but we finally found a link that confirms the story that this indeed was a valid auction sale. It was lot #30321 in Heritage entertainment memorabilia auction #688 described as Beatles’ Autographs on Elvis’ Personal Stationery - August 27, 1965.
As the story goes…The Beatles were scheduled to play the Balboa Stadium in San Diego and Elvis was filming Paradise, Hawaiian Style in Hollywood. On the night of August 27, 1965, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr arrived at Elvis’s house in Bel Air, where Elvis personally greeted them at the door for what became known as the “summit meeting” of pop music and rock and roll.
During that meeting Jerry Schilling, a member of Elvis’s “Memphis Mafia,” got the autographs of all four Beatles on a 5″ …

Les Paul Chasing Sound

April 10th, 2008
By Mike

I watched a couple of really inspirational music videos recently. The ones so good, they just have to be shared with friends, so I’m sharing these with you.
The first video stars an amazing individual, who has led an amazing life. The kind I would say is truly blessed. A life so amazing, in fact, that I believe these people are angels sent from heaven to teach us. And boy, is this guy a teacher! The video is Les Paul - Chasing Sound, from 2007.
Les Paul gives us a personal up-close look at his life and love, Mary Ford. It’s also got some great guest stars; Paul McCartney, Steve Miller, Jeff Beck, Keith Richards, B.B. King and Bonnie Raitt. This DVD is not only interesting viewing, but a historical document, showing the history of recorded music through the man who invented multi-track recording!

Paul, Ringo & Larry King

March 31st, 2008
By Mike

CNN just rebroadcast a Larry King interview with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr this past weekend. Originally broadcast last June, the interview also features Olivia Harrison, Yoko Ono Lennon, and Guy Laliberte, the founder of Cirque du Soleil. They celebrated the first year anniversary of the LOVE show, a high tech blend of modern circus theatre set to an exciting mashup of Beatles music remixed by Sir George Martin and his son Giles.
CNN filmed the tribute show from the Beatles Revolution Lounge at the Mirage in Las Vegas. There’s great dialog between Paul and Ringo, and an interesting story from Olivia talking about how George and Guy came to be friends and fans of each other’s work, and combined their talents to create the LOVE show, the first of it’s kind to celebrate the art and music of the Beatles.
The show’s soundtrack features the Beatles music remixed by Sir George Martin and his son Giles, from the original Abbey Road studio master tapes. LOVE The soundtrack album has both the stereo CD and the 5.1 surround sound DVD, which does sound awesome. The album won a Grammy this year for the surround sound mix.

Neil Aspinall 1941 - 2008

March 25th, 2008
By Mike

Neil Aspinall has passed away in New York at age 66. He was receiving treatment for lung cancer. He was such a huge part of The Beatles success, it’s hard to overestimate how much he will be missed. Not only was he heavily involved in their business, but he was a close schoolmate with Paul McCartney and George Harrison.
He has been described as the “Fifth Beatle,” and here’s why…
Neil Aspinall was The Beatles first road manager in 1961, driving the group between gigs around Liverpool in his van. Later after Mal Evans started managing the band’s equipment, Neil went on to personal management, and also published about The Beatles recording sessions for their fan magazine. He also subbed as a studio musician and performed on “Yellow Submarine,” “Within You Without You,” “Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite” and “Magical Mystery Tour.”
Aspinall also managed Apple Corps from 1970 until last year, and oversaw many high profile lawsuits like the one between Apple Computers and EMI. He was fiercely loyal to The Beatles and fought to protect their copyrights, music and projects. He also had his own film company, and produced the …

Brit 2008 Awards

February 21st, 2008
By Mike

Paul McCartney was honored at the Brit 2008 Awards last night. He received the award for Outstanding Contribution To Music, and then performed a five song set which included “Live and Let Die,” “Hey Jude” and “Lady Madonna.” Host Ozzy Osbourne introduced McCartney as the artist who inspired him to begin a career in music.
Hey Paul, it must feel good to be honored by the British music industry, especially after spending weeks in court during a bitter divorce settlement with ex-wife Heather Mills.
Other Brit winners were Take That for Best British Live Act, the Arctic Monkeys for Best British Album and Group, Mika for Best Breakthrough Act, Mark Ronson for Best British Male Solo Artist, Kate Nash for Best British Female Solo Artist, Kylie Minogue for Best International Female Solo Artist and Kanye West for Best International Male Solo Artist.
It has been noted by several news sources that the British music industry is also suffering record losses in CD sales as more fans download digital music.

YouTube Music Channels

January 16th, 2008
By Mike

YouTube music video channels are a growing trend among artists. It’s something we’ve begun to take notice of, as we’ve come across more and more artists, bands and groups making their presence known online with their videos.
Not only musicians are taking advantage of this medium, but the major record labels and independents are also using YouTube are alternate video distribution channels. One of the cool features I like about the YouTube subscriptions are the email updates with links to the latest added videos.
In an interesting twist to this ongoing online video saga, TV’s are now being designed with internet content in mind. That could put online video sites like YouTube and GoogleVideo in even stronger positions for the future, don’t you think?
Here’s a short article from smartmoney.com about the new TV’s.
I searched the Musician Channels on YouTube and found the following
Music Video Site Sets:

SherylCrowVideos
YanniVideos
EMI America Records

Tom Petty Super Bowl Halftime Show

January 9th, 2008
By Mike

Tom Petty is doing the Halftime show at this year’s Super Bowl. Let’s see, since 2000 we’ve seen and heard Aerosmith, ‘N Sync, Sting, Jessica Simpson, Janet Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones and Prince. The super bowl activities committee is on a roll.
And which songs do you think they will perform? What if they dedicated (and they “customized” their songs for each one of the teams that played the super bowl, and the losers of the playoff games?
Runnin’ Down A Dream” could be Runnin Down A Team
“I Won’t Back Down” could be I Won’t Get A Down
“You Don’t Know How It Feels” and “Refugee” could be dedications to the losing teams
“Don’t Do Me Like That” dedication from one team to another
“Free Fallin” could be “Foot Ballin”
“Mary Jane’s Last Dance” could be customized to just about any player’s name
You only get 3 or 4 songs during halftime, so they better be good. Might as well make it funny and have a laugh with 40 million of your closest friends. And make sure your wardrobe doesn’t malfunction, or they’ll be talking about ya!

George Harrison Tribute

November 30th, 2007
By Mike

Born in 1942, the former Beatle passed away on this date (November 29th) in 2001. My friend Nellie O’Apple at FansOnTheRun posted a cool YouTube video that’s the perfect tribute to George Harrison, the man and his music.
“While My Guitar Gently Weeps” is from the Concert For George, at London’s Royal Albert Hall in 2002, a year after Harrison passed away from cancer. Performed by an all-starr cast including Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, featuring Eric Clapton on lead guitar, with Dhani Harrison looking like a very young George on stage.
God Bless You, George. All Things Must Pass into Love & Peace.

Will you still love me when I'm 64?

I was 23 years old when Paul McCartney sang that question for the Beatles Yellow Submarine. Now I discover, to my great ambivalence that I will be precisely that the day after tomorrow. I was going to write something truly profound this Thursday, as I did when I turned 60, but I was afraid that by then I would forget what it was I wanted to say. In fact, I already have. There isn't profundity floating around anywhere, in here. So instead, as I'm increasingly prone to do, I offer you a few scat

Phil Collins, king of the breakup song, also tops in divorce settlements

Phil Collins has edged out Paul McCartney for the title of the largest celebrity divorce settlement in Britain.

Two Ears and a Heart Cut in Half: Phil Collins Raped in Divorce

“Most expensive British celebrity divorce” is a record you do not want to own. Of course, if you happen to have lost the most money in divorce ever, that means you are already rich as balls. But that doesn’t make losing $46+ million any more enjoyable. Which is the amount Phil Collins got paddled for recently. Phil Collins’ divorce has uprooted Paul McCartney’s as the most expensive for a British celebrity. According to Britain’s Daily Mirror, Phil Collins paid his ex-wife Orianne Cevey $4

A source has revealed that the former Beatle is truly in love with Nancy Shevell and is considering taking the relationship to the next level. Sir Paul McCartney Duets With Yusuf (Cat Stevens)

A very special recording session took place in London recently when Yusuf invited Sir Paul McCartney to sing on a new track, entitled ‘Boots & Sand’. The song was written by Yusuf about the “No-Fly List” saga when, together with his daughter, he was refused entry to the USA in 2004. Drawing on diametric influences from Nashville and Liverpool-rock sounds, Dolly Parton, Alison Krauss and Terry Sylvester also feature on what promises to be a classic.
