An eight hour PBS documentary, ‘On Record: The Soundtrack of Our Lives,’ is in the works for broadcast in the fall of 2010. The enormous multi-media project, about the history of recorded music and it’s impact on society, is under the guidance of the legendary Sir George Martin.

Viewers of the Tony Awards this summer probably wondered why Lin-Manuel Miranda decided to ad-lib his acceptance speeches for "In the Heights." But that's where Lin-Man feels at home. Freestyling his lyrical rhymes. And he gets to go home again with his friends and colleagues in Freestyle Love Supreme, who host a sold-out celebration of hip-hop harmonies and humor every month at Comix - this coming Monday's shows (7 and 9:30 p.m., Dec. 8) will raise funds for the New Orleans VideoVoices Projec
This Saturday night, December 6th, a PBS program, America's Heartland, will feature this past June's Horseradish Fest which was held in Collinsville's Woodland Park. The program will air at 5:30 on St. Louis Channel 9, viewers in other cities should check local listings. Chicago programming seems to be the same as that of St. Louis, 5:30 Saturday.
Today's editorial views with alarm our governor's blanket rejection of federal aid in any form: Is it just us or do other local folks also object to Gov. Mark Sanford's view that South Carolina can get by without any of the bailout packages Congress may enact to help beleaguered state governments? In an appearance on PBS-TV's "News Hour" program Tuesday, our governor said Congress should enact no more bailouts, even ones that create lasting public benefits. South Carolina can survive the reces

By Tom Watkins CNN ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) — Public Broadcasting Service President and CEO Paula Kerger called Wednesday on news organizations to work to keep Americans engaged in the political process, even though the presidential election has ended. “What do we do now?” she asked, reprising the line that Robert Redford asked his political consultant at the end of 1972’s “The Candidate,” after compromising his principles to win an election. “We should be asking that,” Kerger told an audi

What a bunch of shit. As part of its plan, Ford announced that the salary of Ford CEO Alan Mulally would be cut to $1 a year if Ford (F, Fortune 500) actually borrowed money from the government. General Motors (GM, Fortune 500) said that CEO Rick Wagoner also will accept a $1 salary. Chrysler LLC CEO Robert Nardelli is already being paid only $1 a year, according to the Chrysler plan. Mulally had a base salary of $2 million and total compensation of $21.7 million last year, according to
Moving Pictures: The Motion Picture Posted by Jordan Hoffman on 12/03 at 03:52 PM So this movie Cadillac Records is coming out this weekend and I’m sure it is good and all....but when will these biopics end? I’m so sick of biopics that I didn’t even want to see Walk Hard the movie for people who are sick of biopics. It’s only a matter of time before news will creep down from the Great White North that the Film Board of Canada is backing the production of Moving Pictures: The Motion Pict
Continuing from yesterday’s entry - here’s more of the high and lows of Marvel Premiere: Jumping ahead to issue #43, we find Paladin, the rather intriguing mercenary who first popped up in Daredevil. I was re-reading this book not too long ago, having skipped the credits page and it didn’t take me long to realize that it was written by Don McGregor, the archenemy of the typewriter. Ugh, what a wordy mess! Now, I normally loooooove Tom Sutton’s artwork, but it just doesn’t work here. Perhaps
This is just wrong on so many levels. I’m not sure if too many other things can be this polar opposite. [See post to watch Flash video]

Fellow citizens, I'm old. Do you understand the Jonas Brothers craze? I sure as hell don't either, but look at what the kids and teens today are going ballistic over! Hannah Montana, High School Musical, and that huge blockbuster movie Twilight! I'm out of it man! And all these songs that now make the top ten; most of these artists I just can't get into! Rhianna? Chris Brown? T-Pain? WHAT?! And I've lost track of all the reality shows that teens watch too, but thank God I guess for The Soup, wh
December 3, 2008 — Ralph Maughan I found this today on the blog 43rd State Blues. Apparently the documentary soon turned to the “experts” — whining ranchers — our Idaho feudal landlords. There was a link to PBS. At the link it read: “WOLVES IN PARADISE is a tale of survival in the soaring mountains and majestic valleys of southwest Montana, as ranchers face the challenge of living with Yellowstone’s roaming wolf packs while encroaching development threatens their way of life. The film contras

A bit of light reading for an autumn evening. What They Are Saying: Infrastructure Investment Should be Included in Congress’s Next Stimulus Package Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (CA): This is the “perfect” time to “lay out a plan to rebuild America” because “it would stimulate the economy and it would create a tremendous amount
It's a mega-political junkie day, full hour size. We'll start off the hour with a look at the week-in-politics with our resident political junkie Ken Rudin. (and of course he'll try to stump you with this week's trivia question.) Then he'll be joined by former Arkansas Governor and former Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee with a look at the future of the GOP. Huckabee has written a new book entitled Do the Right Thing. Last Sunday, NPR correspondent Ivan Watson and his transIator A
12.03.08 If you like Mark Bittman’s cookbooks—as who does not?—you will be interested in this profile of Mr. Bittman by Jesse Wegman. It begins: Mark Bittman, the New York Times food columnist and best-selling cookbook author, was ambling unnoticed through the tight aisles of the Fairway at 74th Street and Broadway on a mild Friday evening earlier this month, shopping for dinner. He nosed briefly around the fish counter before settling on a two-pound slab of monkfish. He had some Savoy cabbage a

In China, Scientists Discover Oldest Turtle Fossil Ever Found By Lea Winerman (PBS Online) Which came first, the land turtle or the sea turtle? Scientists aren’t sure, but a newly-discovered fossil of a 220-million-year-old turtle seems to tip the scale t
I liked this article/interview from Salon. There seems to be even more being written about same-sex marriage since the defeat of prop. 8 than there was leading up to the vote.Gay marriage is an issue that will not go away. And despite the protestations of Jonah Goldberg (how the hell did this guy become a leading voice of conservatism?), it will take some heavy-handed efforts to force the religious right to step back and stop condemning a large percentage of Americans into second-class citizensh
The New York Times’ Bill Carter… The news of Mr. Gregory’s appointment has been reported on several Web sites this week, including Politico.com and HuffingtonPost.com, though NBC has steadfastly denied that any deal is in place with this White House correspondent, who has most recently served as anchor of a 6 p.m. talk show on MSNBC, NBC’s cable news channel. NBC executives said on Tuesday that the leaks of Mr. Gregory’s selection could be a potential impediment to concluding the deal. But on Su
