Sgt. Pepper’s Bass Drum Beats A Million

The world’s most famous drum head, the hand-painted bass drum skin for The Beatles’ album “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” sold to a private buyer for $1.1 million on Thursday July 10th. That made it the star attraction at Christie’s rock and pop memorabilia auction in London, among other items from The Beatles, [...]

Rock & Roll Read

CNN Entertainment has a great article about all the rock and roll autobiographies in the bookstores this holiday season. Of course, I’m buying the Eric Clapton book first, but there’s also new titles from these great (and not so great) artists…
Currently Available:
Bob Dylan (from 2004)
Genesis (currently on tour)
Nikki Sixx (Motley [...]

Random Trouser Tuesday

December 2, 2008 BINKY PHILIPSBinky Philips EP (Caroline) 1987Sixteen years after his band, the Planets, first opened for the New York Dolls, this Manhattan scene veteran finally made his first record. Whew! Amazingly, he seems none the worse for wear. The five songs cut live at CBGB sound pretty darned fresh: an infectiously rockin’ plea for peace (between lovers? friends? countries?), a power pop love song (slight but durable), a nasty slice of early Elvis Costello-meets-Pete Townshend (or,

Musicians Outside the Blues/R&B/Jazz/Country Traditions Who Should Have a Greater Influence on Rock 'n Roll

We ran a poll recently that asked "What musician is cited most frequently among rock nerds based on their relation to a famous band long before anyone has heard said musician's own music?" The most frequent response was La Monte Young, the minimalist composer under whom John Cale studied and who presumably was a great influence on the music of the Velvet Underground. Young is a good example of what I'm seeking from you: Musicians outside the blues, R&B, jazz, and country (ie, North America

Wolfgang’s Vault Concert of the Week-The Who @ The Spectrum Philadelphia PA 12.4.1973

(All text via Wolfgang’s Vault) Evolving from Pete Townshend’s idea for a musical autobiography of The Who, the second of the group’s two full-scale rock operas, Quadrophenia, eventually developed into a social, musical and psychological exploration of the mid-1960s mod scene in England. Written from the perspective of a British teenager, Jimmy, the band member’s role in the storyline became symbolic via Jimmy’s four personalities. Like much of Townshend’s work, Quadrophenia examined the un

Scoop

Scoop A couple of weeks ago, I visited the storied Troubadour nightclub in Hollywood to see the latest installment of “In the Attic,” the series of acoustic showcases starring Pete Townshend (on his days off from the Who’s world tour) and organized by his girlfriend Rachel Fuller. I interviewed the two of them (plus Zooey Deschanel and Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie); the resulting article was intended for Rolling Stone, but due to the magazine’s ongoing page crunch (times are tough all ov

Pretty Things - S.F. Sorrow 1968

S.F. Sorrow is the title of a 1968 LP by the British rock group The Pretty Things. One of the first rock concept albums, S.F. Sorrow was based on a short story by singer-guitarist Phil May. The album is structured as a song cycle, telling the story of the main character, Sebastian F. Sorrow, from birth through love, war, tragedy, madness, and the disillusionment of old age.Although the album is also a Rock Opera, it has been stated by The Who that it had no major influence on Pete Townshend and

My Big Fat 2008 Turkey of the Year

The word "Thanksgiving" has many meanings. In historical context, the Pilgrims gave thanks for their new home, free of the religious persecution they escaped in Europe. In modern times, it means food. Lots of it. And family get-togethers. And football. And turkey. Lots of turkey. Here,we're serving up the turkey as well, celebrating the second annual "2008 Turkey Of The Year," devoted to the year's masters of media buffoonery. And what a year it was! Of course, it was all about the election this

Exhibition

Below is an excerpt from a NY Times article about a punk rock auction at Christie's. CBGB's sticker-encrusted urinal is already museum-worthy, and on Monday more detritus from the era of the Ramones and the Clash hurtled its way into high culture, when Christie's hosted its first auction devoted to punk memorabilia. Vivienne Westwood bondage pants, photographs of Lou Reed and Blondie, badges for the Buzzcocks and concert fliers from clubs like Max's Kansas City went up for bid at the decidedly

Robert Wyatt - Clash Q

The celebrated musician talks to Clash A staunch humanitarian with a high, keening voice that explores the outer reaches of both rock and jazz – it’s safe to say that Robert Wyatt is an almost unique figure in modern music. After a tragic accident left him wheelchair bound in 1973, Wyatt picked himself up and embarked upon a singular solo career. Sometimes flirting with the charts, but more often than not a lone voice crying in the wilderness, Wyatt seems to embody the curious eccentricity tha

Give Landmines The Boot With Charity Auction

Written by Tim Saunders A British charity for victims of landmines has launched their annual online celebrity shoe auction. The Mines Advisory Group has gathered footwear from over 50 celebrities for the auction, which will raise vital funds for their projects and draw attention to the part of the body most vulnerable to landmines. The auction was launched by model Kelly Knox, the glamorous winner of BBC 3’s best disabled model competition, at Merchant Taylor’s Hall in London. “We are extre

Playlist: Rock ’n’ roll Indians!

Native American music – traditional Native American music – isn’t known for swinging or grooving. Which is why the “powwow beat” didn’t evolve into rhythm & blues. But a few Indians (or semi-Indians) have made their impact on rock ’n’ roll. And I’m not talking about Hendrix, who was one-eighth Cherokee. Click the song titles below to hear what I mean. 1. “Come and Get Your Love” – Redbone You know I had to start with this one. Redbone in the 1970s was packaged and sold as a Native American R

If All Goes Wrong DVD review

All in all, I’d rate this DVD as a 7/10…a little higher for those that are interested in the creative process, a little lower for old school Smashing Pumpkins fans. I’ll be honest…I’ve never really been a fan of Smashing Pumpkins, but I’ve also never really taken the time to get to know them.  Oddly enough, after watching IF ALL GOES WRONG, I have the feeling that Billy Corgan doesn’t feel like anyone takes the time to get to know him, not even his “biggest fans”.  IF ALL GOES WRONG follows

The Dividing of the Pumpkins Fans, Part 3: A DVD Review

This is part 3 of a 4 part piece I am writing, inspired by a pair of Smashing Pumpkins concerts and a DVD documentary. As you may or may not know, I am a big Smashing Pumpkins fan, I always appreciate their work. I feel the need to preface this piece by saying that as it will give you an insight into the context of my commentary. It’s been something of a Smashing Pumpkins month for me. In addition to back to back concert events, I also picked up a copy of the band’s most recent DVD release: If
