She was born in rural Mississippi to a poor teenage single mother and later raised in an inner city Milwaukee neighbourhood. According to Wikipedia and several other sources she was raped at age 9 and at 14 gave birth to a son who died in infancy. She skipped twice at school and was recognized early for her speaking talents. She revolutionized the tabloid t

Yesterday, this post from my favorite fool inspired me to look up the following entry that ran, ironically, exactly three years ago today. I liked the post so much, I decided to put it up again for my newer readers' perusal.* * *His fans claim he is a world-renowned journalist. He was surely once a daytime television talk show host that was some unholy combination of Phil Donahue and Jerry Springer. That gig earned him a live-on-the-air broken nose, as well as shows with titles such as "Men
POETRYTHE BILL MARTIN JR. BIG BOOK OF POETRY with Foreword by Eric Carle (Simon and Schuster)All through elementary school and part of high school, the celebrated author of BROWN BEAR, BROWN BEAR, WHAT DO YOU SEE? could not read. He was taught through rhythm, "dum-da-da, dum-da-da-dum," and that quality of musicality has ever since permeated all of his early childhood classics. Here, we discover the poetry that tuned the author's ear for language and meter, shared in a special volume that is b
Bless you, internet. If it wasn’t for you, we wouldn’t have known how Rosie O’Donnell reacted to Barbara Walters saying she should “get on with her life” yesterday morning until her interview with Conan O’Brien that night. But thanks to the information superhighway, Rosie had a vlog up by 5:00pm, complete with reaction shots, the Billy Elliott: The Musical photo taken last week, Eminem’s “Without Me” and a crack about Debbie Matenopolous. Harness that technology, Rosie! Not that she was out
Public Groveling: TV Made Them Do It Politics | Bill Clinton did, but Grover Cleveland didn’t: publicly confess a sexual indiscretion. Why? An author ties the modern “public grovel” to evangelism’s move from revival tent to TV screen, and group therapy’s move to TV talk shows via Phil Donahue et al. [History News Network]

Here's the list of the Documentary Features and Shorts for the AIFF. The Festival site doesn't have links up yet, so I've done what I could to fill in a bit of information on the films. The program guide is available in PDF form. The website also says the program guide will be in the Press on November 26. It would be nice if they had information on getting tickets on their site and prices. There are ads in the Press and ADN that say tickets are available at Bear Tooth, but that's what the webs

Karen Solomon and Mike Flynn have done it again. For the second year in a row, they created an LA-based green business conference with a modicum of style and copious amounts of substance. The list of keynotes and panelists at Opportunity Green was a who’s who of environmentally-driven executives, pillars of the conscious publishing world, and leaders of the rapidly emerging field of Social Media. According to Karen and Mike, “Our purpose is to fill your head with knowledge you can use: ideas,

by Richard Huff - New York Daily News If he were a senior in college today, he probably wouldn't pay to see his film, "Body of War." The film was produced and directed by Ellen Spiro and Donahue. It hit festivals and theaters early this year, and will air tomorrow night(tonight) at 7 on the Sundance Channel. "It's tough, it's har
Why Phil Donahue made Body Of War By Gilbert Cruz Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008 Long-time talk show host Phil Donahue wants America to take a long look at what the Iraq War is doing to its young men and women. Body of War, which Donahue produced and co-directed with Ellen Spiro, and which airs tonight on the Sundance Channel in honor of Veterans Day, tells the story of Tomas Young, a formerly gung-ho soldier who was paralyzed after less than a week in Iraq. Donahue spoke with TIME about getting kic
