“Welcome to the Machine” Pink Floyd
This Double-Disc DVD from Classic Rock Legends was just released May 13th. Somehow I overlooked it last week, but I have to mention this because Pink Floyd is one of my favorite psychedelic bands from the sixties. They are a true classic rock [...]
When I went to CMJ in October, The School of Seven Bells was one of the most talked about bands of the festival. And I missed them! It was one of the only bands I didn’t get to see that I had on my short list. Luckily, I got a chance this morning when they visited Morning Becomes Eclectic, and brought their psychedelic, beat heavy sound. The vocals are courtesy of twins Alejandra and Claudia Deheza, who joined with former Secret Machines member Benjamin Curtis in 2007. They initially met while
Since slowly getting back into the record game a couple years ago, Slumberland seems to have been loading up for a huge display of fireworks in 2008. The years spent in inactivity haven’t dulled their knack for finding great pop bands and putting out great records, one after another. The Lodger - Life is Sweet The Lodger’s debut album, Grown-Ups, was a fine slice of indie pop that called to mind stellar groups like Orange Juice, the Wedding Present, and Heavenly, while making a case that they
It’s nice to see some stars in the making gathered together in an event that is scheduled to be held monthly. Klabjazz’s Jazz Break Revival has been constantly held at Balai Pertemuan Bumi Sangkuriang since last April, except on Ramadhan month. This event is a place where the young talents meet and share what they know, join together, jam together and make something new out of their collaboration. Every month Jazz Break Revival has their agenda, their concept or theme. They put the bands on s
Stu Brooks' power stance. Photo credit: Katelyn Bogucki At the November 21st Dub Trio show, the crowd was thin, possibly because the band had already played Chicago several times this year. Although the initial hype may have settled, those in attendance seemed to be actively anticipating the band’s third Subterranean appearance in 2008. I did not arrive in time to see local groups Rollo Tornasi and Lorus, but I did see all of Goes Cube’s set and was very impressed with the drummer, Kenny Ap

Lead singer, guitarist, and primary songwriter Gary Lee Yoder and lead guitarist Dehner Patten had been in the Oxford Circle, an obscure early Northern Californian psychedelic band that had cut one garage/psych single ("Foolish Woman"/"Mind Destruction") and played some shows on the San Francisco psy
MGMT (No, it's 'M-G-M-T'. Not 'Management') started out as two college students playing psyched out, 15-minute-shows with inflatable snowmen in the living room of the Eclectic Society's house at Wesleyan University. They didn't care about what came out, it was really just a test to see how annoying they could be. Now, Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, are all of a sudden signed to a major label, touring across the world making people dance. They are just now starting to find out the mea

Six foot three and close to 300 pounds in his salad days, the Wolf was the primal force of the music spun out to its ultimate conclusion. A Robert Johnson may have possessed more lyrical insight, a Muddy Waters more dignity, and a B.B. King certainly more technical expertise, but no one could match him for the singular abil
Last year, I gave you loads of christmas songs every day from 1-24, but since I need to spend my time and energy a little bit different this year, I’ll give you some new ones when they arrive, and not every day. Here are some nice christmas records coming up: To get you into the mood, I’ll start by presenting a new christmas song that the Norwegian band The Margarets are giving away for free on their website. It’s a wonderful song. Those of you who read Eardrums regularly may have heard of an
:: Brian F. Johnson :: Publisher/Editor :: :: Rage Against the Machine :: :: Denver Coliseum :: August 27 :: Held during the Democratic National Convention, this show goes down in my book as not only one of the best shows of 2008, but as one of the best shows I’ve ever seen — period. This was mid-day in a hot Coliseum, with no alcohol sales, and the crowd didn’t mind one bit once Rage stepped in front of the lights. Rage absolutely killed it. They were furious, loud and overflowing with angs
One of the primary architects of music radio as we know it today, Bill Drake, died over the weekend at age 71. In 1965, at KHJ in Los Angeles, Drake created “Boss Radio,” a tight, music-focused format, and hired some of the most famous jocks in the biz. Later, he pioneered automated FM formats. Coincidentally, I’ve been listening recently to Psychedelic Promos and Radio Spots, a vast compilation that collects commercials, station promos, aircheck excerpts, and even a few news clips from stations
My first experience with the band Deerhunter came about purely by accident as they were on the same bill as some other band that I had set out to see (which may have been the Ponys) @ Emo’s one night a bit more than a year ago. Knowing nothing about the band, the music resonated with me mostly because it touched on a few different genres that had been, and sometimes still remain of interest to me at times. Minimalist, sometimes sparse, psychedelic, garage rock, all represented while being fro
Some photos from this past Friday night’s sold out garage rock blowout at Johnny Brenda’s in Philadelphia with The King Khan and BBQ Show, Vivian Girls, Jacuzzi Boys and Love City. Love City has been one of the Philly bands people most often recommend that I should get out and see. I finally got my chance the see them on Friday and they more than exceeded any expections. With a sound that’s equal parts sixties psychedelic fuzz and seventies era punk rock the kicked the night off in fine fashion
The parallels between 1976 and 2008 are undeniable. Back then, the economy was in shambles, suffering through a wicked bout of inflation. Late in the year, hope arrived in the person of Jimmy Carter, a Democrat who was elected president to put an end to eight dark years of Republican rule. Sound familiar? Sadly, no such parallels exist within the music world. In 1976, record companies were on the verge of seeing some of their biggest sales ever. Artistic giants prowled the stages of the world.

There are bands out, which are truly dangerous, insane and realy out of mind. Personally I never heard something so strong, confused and insane as Spektr. Spektr is a two man band from France, these guys are playing some Experimental-Psychedelic-Industrial-Brutal Black Metal-Ambient. You should not listen to this kind of music alone or in the late night hours, truly, you can get a brain damage from that :) So my advice, do not put this in your Mp3 players, just on your own responsibility. My hig
When we first published our review of Dead Man's latest offering, Euphoria, I don't think either the Pope or I were halfway prepared for the furor that caused. The Ripple switchboard lit up like a christmas tree in Central Park. Immediately, Dead Man shot to the top of our most requested review chart and have pretty much taken permanent residence there ever since. With that history, how could we not invite the Dead Man crew for an interview. So joining us today on the Ripple couch are Krille a
I'm pretty sure that more people read this blog than the Boston Globe, but there's a mention in the Sunday edition. Welcome to my little slice of cheapness! Hope you eventually see something you like. For the regulars, maybe this extra scrutiny will make me ship up. You might still get a tardy weekly list. 2008-11-30 Looking through my Last.fm charts, I realised that I've seen most of the bands that I've wanted to see over the past few years. There's a few acts that have toured that I couldn't go see (mainly John Cale who toured 2 days after I went overseas last year). There are a number of bands that I would really like to see but haven't been able to since they haven't toured here recently (if ever). Hopefully they'll come soon.Wolf ParadeThere was a lot of excitement of the rumour of Wolf Par
There's so much, arguably too much, music. You don't have time to listen to all the good music in any genre and sub-specialty that turns you on. So how does your band stand out from the millions of other identical groups? Have a creative MySpace Music bio/about. Here are some real examples for you to slavishly imitate or surpass: Retarded Muppit Farm Billy Sr. and Billy Jr., The boys in Retarded Muppit Farm (RMF), are both ordained ministers who met during a hang gliding day-camp in 2
